PS3 launch delayed until fall?

Why the hell wouldn't they. You know, I know and everyone else knows that if the PS3 launched with Fantavision 2 and Spiderman 2 on Blu-Ray, it would still sell out. Sure, initially the press will bash Sony but next Fall when the *REAL* games come out, a selective amnesia will engulf everyone and buying a PS3 at launch would be "worth it".

We'll see if the February Playstation show stays on schedule. If so, it will launch in Japan this Spring. If not, they'll probably also attempt a worldwide launch this Fall (with disastrous results)

I'm okay with current generation games until the Fall, but past that it will start getting interesting.

Meh, PS3 was going to be the first console I bought at launch since DC, but if there's no software I probably won't go through the trouble...Still, PS2 BC with (possibly) upgraded graphics might make me bite

If the games aren't ready for launch, why the hell should they force it out? That's why people would be ok with it if it were to be delayed.

Im not saying they should force it, im just pointing out the fact that sony gets a free pass for whatever reason. Lets assume this is true, the games arent ready for launch, the hardware is buggy and as a result the launch will be delayed. Almost everyone here allready "knows" the launch will be delayed so its not that far of a stretch. That is a major fuck up on Sonys part. If the roles were reversed this thread would be 6 pages long and filled with dozens of stupid photoshops.

Wait, if no one really knew when PS3 was being released in the first place, how can there be a delay?

Sony keeps saying Spring.

A spokesman for Sony, the No. 1 provider of game consoles, said it was still targeting a spring 2006 launch for the PS3, which is key to maintaining its lead in the game console market against Microsoft, which recently launched its competing Xbox 360 console.

Sure it would, but they're aiming high with the system. Just look at how slowly they're releasing info and screens of the games, they're trying to get them at a point that they're satisfied with. People complained about their launch with the PS2, and now they seem to be trying to fix it by making an all round great launch and instead people want them to just force it out.

It hasn't happened yet, and there's no real proof that it will happen. Sony's said the system will launch in Spring, they haven't said that'll be a worldwide launch in Spring though which it seems alot of people think they will do. They've just said it'll launch then, that means if its out in 1 territory (Japan) then they're on track. The other launches are going to follow that later in the year probably. Nothing wrong with that. There's no reason for them to try a worldwide launch. The only thing you're going to get from that is rushed software and lots of hardware shortages.

What difference does it make? A delay is a delay no matter which territory.

Makes a difference to me. What the hell do I care when it's released in Japan? I don't.

Also, if they want to stop MS from getting a lead out here, they need to launch out here. Launching in Japan doesn't do shit for them in NA.

AT CES the impression is they want PS2 to go on as long as possible. So PS3 will likely just debut first in Japan. US release according to publishers is expected end of the year. So i am guessing this will be the case.

Sony has said Spring 2006 for the PS3 for quite awhile now. If they were actually planning to delay delivery past that I'd have expected them to say something by now - they announced the PSP would slip from its planned worldwide release by the end of 2004 a full 9-10 months in advance.

Im just curious to know why people actually want a delay. Instead of bitching about it like they do about everything else they sit back and applaud sony for not having their shit together. Its funny to watch really. If I had to wait another year for HD gaming I would go insane.
Sorry, where are you seeing comments from people *wanting* the PS3 to be delayed? Maybe you ought to actually call out the specific people you're referring to? And this thread seems to be a particularly peculiar place to bring it up since most people here are simply questioning the credibility of this rumor.

Just a snippet :

If Sony wanted to stoke the rumor mill, they've done their job well. Rumor sites are now buzzing with speculation that the PS3 launch is delayed due to bugs. Kotaku now claims to have some of the inside information that we all love so much. They assert that the PS3's problems are severe enough that the launch has to be postponed because it's impossible to get the games running well. It's certainly no secret that the asynchronous and highly multithreaded nature of the console is making games harder to develop and that the learning curve is fairly steep, but if things really are this bad, Sony could be in some hot water with developers.

Also Kotaku is reporting some stuff:

Sad news if true for gamers. You just know Bill Gates is calling his spy network to see if this is legit.lol

Due to bugs? Why dont they just come clean and say the last minute switch to Nvidia gpu is the cause of this delay..because there is a very good chance thats why there may be delay.

Theres a rumor that the RSX GPU is already taped out and the Killzone team is one of the first Devs to have their hands on a RSX+Cell DEV Kit

It's a baseless rumor. Sony will have to change their tune fairly soon, as a $300-400 system selling at least 1M units will account for some $500M+ on their Q1 earnings report. Investors need to know about this to make proper decisions with their shares. I'd wager we find out for certain whether Spring or Fall is the NA date. Actual days will probably still be left until later, IMO.

My guess? Spring/Summer for NA and JP, Fall for EU. Why? Meh, I don't see a reason not to get the BD ball rolling over here. The PSP showed they can drive a format's success, and the PS3 is clearly the lynchpin for the format, so I wouldn't expect them to leave its release until too late. Isn't Summer a good time for video sales? I have absolutely no clue, but it seems like a good time of year to me. Spring goes until June anyway, allowing them time to do a proper NA kickoff at E3, eventhough it's not absolutely necessary. The Feb show will be heavily covered by domestic media anyway. In EU, HDTV won't be a big deal this year, and so it's not as pivotal at the moment for BD sales. But I think NA is important enough that they'll go for Spring or Summer. PEACE.

A system launch in the dead of summer in North America is beyond ludicrous.

I think it would be genious. PS3 will sell out no matter when Sony launches. Why not sell out during the slow months and then have plenty of stock when holiday spending ramps up.

The last console that did that was, IIRC, the Sega Saturn. At least the PS3 will have decent launch games, right?

Right?

VF, Daytona, Clockwork Knight, WWS, WSB and (especially) Panzer Dragoon made for a more than "decent" launch imo.

Well I wouldn't be surprized. If they plan on launching it this spring, they sure aren't talking about the launch like they normally do.

if it was going to launch anytime before E3 we'd probably be knee-deep in press junkets and the like by now

If they don't really let all things out next month you'll have a point. Till then its up in the air. They've been incredibly tightlipped about almost everything about the system since E3.
