PS3 launch with Spiderman 2 Blu-Ray

Does anyone think (or know) if this might be a possibility?

As with PSP and UMD it would go a long way to introducing consumers to the new format (even for non HD owners the extra interactivity and bonus features offered over the DVD version would suffice)

Granted Spiderman 2 won't have quite the pull next year as it did this year but looking at Sony Pictures release schedule over the next 12 months there doesn't seem to be any other titles with that kind of pulling power (Spiderman 3 is slated for 2007).

It's a shame Spiderman 3 wasn't ready in time - would have been the perfect combo of '3's especially with the fonts now matching :D

Sony needs to let go of Spiderman. They have better movies that everyone can watch.
But I have been thinking about the same thing, that with the first million PS3's or so you get a free Blu-Ray movie. Maybe FF7: Advent Children?

You know what? Next time, PLEASE think about the title of your topic. Not only its misleading but it pisses allot of people off as they would think they would have discovered something really cool only to be dismayed once they enter the topic.

Anyway, it would be a nice idea but Spiderman 2 wouldn't be the title as it would be too old by the time the PS3 is launched. Also, is it still confirmed that the will launch with Blu-Ray? There has been so many things been included/excluded in to the machine that everyone is losing track.

You spooked me, I thought at first that there was an official announcement.

How about bundling in a preview disc of Spider-Man 3 in Blu-Ray? Not the whole movie, but maybe several minutes of it, picking a part with some showy sequences. The rest of the disc could be other previews (Advent Children, something else), and depending on how the discs work, maybe a game demo or two. (The disc would only have to be playable in the PS3, so they could make a game disc that just spits out video primarily.)

They should bundle in the entire run of Married with Children.

They do indeed have many better movies especially now they have access to the MGM titles.

However, Spiderman 1 & 2 have been their largest box office successes of the last decade (or even longer) and its mass appeal far surpasses anything else in their catalogue which is what would be the overriding factor in any decision regarding which title to include.

I can only think of the entire James Bond collection as being a viable alternative in terms of mass appeal and that is not going to happen unless they raise the package price by some $200.

Yes it has been confirmed.

From the official PS3 specs:

isc Media
CD PlayStation CD-ROM, PlayStation 2 CD-ROM, CD-DA, CD-DA (ROM), CD-R, CD-RW, SACD, SACD Hybrid (CD layer), SACD HD, DualDisc, DualDisc (audio side), DualDisc (DVD side)
DVD: PlayStation 2 DVD-ROM, PlayStation 3 DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
Blu-ray Disc: PlayStation 3 BD-ROM, BD-Video, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE

And there have not been many things excluded from the machine unless many means the router functionality which was never claimed to be in the machine in the first place.

The movie must be able to be viewed by all. It must have some mass appeal. And it needs to pretty new as they want maximum picture clarity(with cool effects) for a pack in disc that is there to show the format off.

EDIT: Hey, how about a Knight's Tale? That movie is brilliant. Hilarious, romantic, adventury, great music...etc.

I hadn't thought of that but yes, an exclusive preview of Spiderman 3 would actually be the next best thing to Spiderman 3 itself and something which would definitely get a lot of movie and Spidey fans interested.

Just to put it into context, here are the top 10 all-time US box office numbers

Code:
1.	Titanic (1997)	$600,779,824
2.	Star Wars (1977)	$460,935,665
3.	Shrek 2 (2004)	$436,471,036
4.	E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)	$434,949,459
5.	Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)	$431,065,444
[b]6.	Spider-Man (2002)	$403,706,375[/b]
7.	The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)	$377,019,252
[b]8.	Spider-Man 2 (2004)	$373,377,893[/b]
9.	Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)	$371,863,119
10.	The Passion of the Christ (2004)	$370,270,943

The only Sony pictures movies in the top 10 are Spiderman 1 and 2.

If Fox were to confirm support officially for Blu-Ray (there are strong rumours but no confirmed announcement) then that would open up Titanic, Star Wars and The Passion of the Christ.

Star Wars will never happen until well into the life span of next gen DVD, The Passion of the Christ just isn't suitable family viewing, leaving only Titanic which I don't think has the current mindshare that Spiderman has nor do I think Sony will put out a disc of a non Sony Pictures owned movie.

The Passion of the Christ

Blatantly not true. It has no detrimental effects on a child's mental health or worldview... *thinks of Southpark’s Passion of the Jew episode*

Being serious, Spiderman is one of the quintessential pack-in movies because it's insanely popular, and as you characterized, it's very bland and widely accepted. The Vanilla Ice-cream, if you will, of the movie world.

IAWTP... Of course I hope Advent Children is available on plain-old DVD as well.
