Switch 2 games with ray tracing?

I'm sure there will be an isometric indie that will make use of it, or maybe a Shinen game. You'll also see the level of "raytracing" that we saw on PS4--some shadows, some reflections--but games will heavily rely on raster.

Full on path tracing in a mainstream game isn't happening, IMO.

Doesn't the new content in Mario party that just released for switch 2 have ray tracing?
Can't access the trailer right now but the reflections in some of the stages really gave me the low quality (grainy) ray traced impression
I've mentioned that several times already and I'm still wondering if they're not planar reflections instead, which they might be, I don't know about the limitations of it against RT in except it only works great in flat surfaces, I'm not sure if it would affect something like the metal plates under the bombs in the painting mini game.

The only problem I see with Switch 2 and using RT is the BVH step which is vital and requires a lot of CPU to calculate lighting intersections, apart from that it should even perform better than XSS but the CPU is a bottleneck.

But who knows? They can solve by bypassing that step using something else (like AMD pretend with Redstone) or optimizing to avoid per frame calculations by using advanced memoization or whatever, I mean, we currently have games with very optimized RT lighting which we didn't thought was even possible until next gen 🤷

I just wouldn't count on it. But except for the heavy CPU utilization, RT should perform way better on Switch 2 than it does in XSS no contest there, we already have Star Wars Outlaws coming so let's see how it does.

hmmm, i remember sometime ago when DF said no 1080p or 120hz screen also no VRR or DLSS. Look how it turned out. All early NSW2 game we are seeing so far started with switch 1 one in mind. When Nintendo starts the real NSW2 game its going to blow away expectations. MARK THIS DOWN.

We will probably see it in a small minigame or something like that. Not as the main feature in the game itself.

It was designed to have RT just so Nintendo can say that their system is strong enough to have it, but it's the worst idea for the system. Nobody plays with RT on a phone, and the same should apply to the Switch.
It will need to have RT capabilities to get ports of certain games.

Plus Switch 2 games won't only get played on the small screen, but on the TV too.

I mean, can't they just nerf the visuals into the ground for those third party ports? And even if docked, hardware is still far from being acceptable for anything rt. Fps is just gonna tank hard af.

Hey look another thread where somebody toys with the idea of technical advancements for Nintendo games and it's met with a defensive uproar.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Just like how it was for DLSS by DF statements... hmm
Didn't watch it, but i wouldn't be excited for rt with or without dlss. The goal of the system is to be able to play your games on a bus, not have the most demanding graphical feature that even the other two systems can barely handle. All this RT talk on the switch reminds me of that 8K sticker on the PS5 box. Shit's for show.

Depends what you mean "nerf the visuals".

The lighting system in Star Wars Outlaws requires RT. Degrading the resolution or textures won't change that.

So either Ubisift use the RT capabilities in Switch 2, or they rebuild the entire lightning system. I think the first option is easier.

I meant that they might downgrade it to the point that even if the rt lighting is present, it's so mid that it's not noticeable. I don't know if it can be done, or maybe it's more effort than what they even want to invest into it, but that's the only kind of rt i'd expect from mobile hardware in 2025.

If Control came to it it would be an easy one

Star Wars Outlaws will be first though

Assassin's creed shadows has been rumoured to come too

RTGI would be perfect for Nintendo scope of games, like it would fit really nicely with a Zelda, but I think for Nintendo this is like alien technology.

Potentially that could happen.

But even in that scenario the RT hardware in Switch 2 is useful, as otherwise the game wouldn't be on the platform at all.

Not necessarily, they could create an optimize RT model for Switch 2 specifically, the reason why RT is so heavy in most games except for Doom TDA is because it's badly implemented everywhere else, basically as a gimmick alongside their existing rasterized model, while IdTech took the opposite approach by ditching any rasterized lighting and focusing on RT optimization... It worked and it shows great performance and graphical improvements, I've had games without RT run way worse on my PC than Doom TDA.

I'm not saying that Nintendo will definitely use RT, but they're the masters of cutting corners while hiding the rough edges to speed up development and make optimizations so I wouldn't discard them being one of the first devs to focus on RT lighting, specially since they only have to focus on Switch 2 and, more importantly, Switch 2 having the best RT hardware of all consoles this far.

They also have the same type of tech to release CPU from working too much that other consoles have and some more like direct GPU access to SSD and many (not all) of their games tend to run in small levels so while I don't think it's going to necessarily happen, I think it's not impossible.

That "bUt NiNtEnDo 🤪" mentality means nothing in reality, specially this gen.

Giga took it a bit far in this thread with the number of posts salivating to directly compare Outlaws on NS2 to some janky settings test video on Steam Deck.

But that's a harsh penalty man.

Nah it isn't. If it isn't pointless warring, his retard speak disrupts every single thread. That shit is long played out. And I've seen him act and type normally. He's just being a dumbass.

I personally was fed up with him doing that bs every single thread and consistently being like 'crudddddd' and exaggerating every line of text. It honestly pissed me off because it's not funny nor amusing to do that over and over times infinity. The act is completely worn out and tiresome.

Honestly the forum is better without him

huh.in Nintendo i believe. if its there they will use it one way or the other.

I'm 100% sure Nintendo will use the RT cores creatively and not only for graphics.

Did you see their BOTW sound design GDC talk? They'll probably use RT mostly for stuff like sound or way materials detections for simulations and whatnot in Zelda, something like what Id Software did in Doom Eternal or for RT sound

Yes Nintendo will finds innovative ways to use it.

GigaBowser GigaBowser how are you banned AGAIN

It's kind of perfect, since it isn't a perm but sends a message about warring. I'll miss him personally, but some clearly won't and he still has another chance.

Better than nothing, but when it's never running on Quality, it's nothing worth talking about. When these upscalers are used on Performance, it's blurry af, so bleh.
So its good according to Devs. So again lets wait and see how is it used. in Nintendo i believe. They are the Master of their Craft. If it there it will be used and it will be impactful maybe not the way u will hope its used.
