PS3: the most over-engineered console - or how Sony almost lost it all

No greater fumble than Xbox after 360.

It's an incredible feat.

indeed. it takes a special kind of retard to do that... it was such an easy win to just ride home. like if you're running towards the goal and the goalie is behind you.

but he did it!

This was from June 2009, the infamous Bobby Kotick threatened to pull off support from the PS3 if Sony doesn't lowered the price of the System, then September 2009 came with the Slim and the rest is History.

More than 15 years later, COD sell most on PlayStation consoles.
Yep, that's when I jumped back to PS land as well. Slim bundle for $299 was a pretty darn good deal at the time.

Them and Insomniac.
If anyone deserves closure now, it is Insomniac.
Naughty Dog released Uncharted and Uncharted 2 between 2007 and 2009 as well.

Output from both companies (Insomniac and ND) during the PS5 era has been decent for the former one and mediocre for the latter, but the thing is that their games are selling more compared to previous gens and that's what matters to Sony atm.

ND was a bit late to the party, Insomniac and Evolution started at launch and kept titles flowing the entire gen.

My PS3 was a little special to me as it was my official return to console gaming after many years of gaming on PC. l loved my original PS3 60gb so much. I don't think any other console I've owned either previously or after has ever looked or felt as premium as that behemoth.

I think many forgot about the 20gb variant which was $100 less...
The Xbox 360 had 2 variants as well, but they both were $200 cheaper compared to each PS3 Model, and it ran Multiplatform games at better resolutions and increased fps.

But Sony lost exclusive franchises like Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and many more.

It was a great console for sure, it got a turning point in September 2009 with the Slim launch.

They're always late to the party since the PS3 gen, especially with the PS5.

The problem with evolution was Driveclub didn't met expectations, and Insomniac is making a lot of money for Sony (same as ND).

Too bad they're not into supporting experimental projects anymore like in the PS3 gen.

I really wish Sony was in the semiconductor business nowadays. The PS3 was an amazing idea and it really started to shine at the end of its lifecycle. So much so that the PS4 could have been delayed a year or two.

It was we the gamers and fans who were not ready for the most ambitious console of all time up until that point. They tried to think of everything and the hardware backwards compatability.

Funny most gamers today would happily shell that kind of cash so subpar products. Just look at the Rog Ally X bullshit.

Sony should have released a Budget PS3 Sku at the same time and avoided some of the drama.

then under that flap there were 3 fucking flash card readers... I have never met someone or read about anyone actually putting a fucking CompactFlash card into a PS3...
Funnily enough, when I picked up my ps3 from a pawn shop there was a compactflash card slotted in with softcore porn wall papers in stretched resolutions. It the only time I ever saw a compactflash card.
To bad that ps3 died, hopefully o can find someone to repair it.

From a Marketing standpoint Sony was trying to push both the Cell CPU and the Blu-ray format. It worked with the PS2

What happened was... They read the market entirely wrong. They failed with the Cell and the Blu-ray didn't mattered in the long run. The console became over expensive and difficult to work with until the end of the generation.

The PS3 was just a more successful Sega Saturn.

I'd love to see some John Burton style retrospectives on what it was like to develop for it.
