I'd be willing to commit to saying that a huge percentage of the footprint of the console is dedicated to cooling it.

i really hope they release it in the 3 different colors when it hits the states. I want a white one badly, and hopefully they'll make the controllers match the system. The controller's plastic looks cheap in comparison to the console.

I hated it yesterday when I just saw the grey one, but I'm really warming up to this thing. The white and black ones, anyway.

Why does Sony put the power button in back?

That controllers is hideous? It looks like it should be the official Batman Begins controller....

I'm not a fan of the PS3 design. Very bulky and unappealing, and the controller is even worse. However the features that are contained within that ugly shell is what makes me excited for it. :D

It's the main power switch for the power supply. Note the front of the PS3, on the right-hand side of the drive: an on/off button that likely toggles between on and standby.

Just like the PS2.

Man that controller looks retarded. My money's on the final design not looking anything like that.

Agreed.

I'm trying to imagine holding that thing while pushing the buttons, and it's just not working.

The controller looks really comfortable - so what if the design sucks? It's shaped in such a way that will conform to small and large hands.

Yeah, the console design is ugly, for sure. But it's what's on the inside that counts, hehe

People hold the PS3's ugliness against it like they would in deciding to date an ugly girl. :lol

Looks slic in that picture but...uhm..what's going on in that D-pad?

...actually even the buttons. They look like they fell inside the controller inside that second pic. Is that an optical illusion?

Ugly? Eh. The PS2 is ugly, this is a step up.
Ehh, but the PS2 design was more simplistic, even if a little edgy and -- plain. Yeah, plain is the word you're looking for. It didn't really stand out or anything, it was the COMPLETE opposite. Very square looking.

PS3 on the other hand has really weird curves and is kind of bulky.

I'd get used to the controller design if its comfortible, hopefully they let people at the show hold the controller.

The PS2 is Water Heater Chic, I was never a fan of the "lines." Make no mistake, I don't think the PS3's design is ideal either, but I'd take it over the PS2's design any day of the week. Twice on Sunday.

Despite the bizarre look, I'm thinking the controller could be quite comfortable as long as the two prongs are textured so you have something to grip. Wish it had a set of triggers and a different analog stick layout though. Final judgement will have to wait until after holding both, but thus far the 360 controller looks much nicer.

It looks like the D-pad and buttons are clear plastic with the symbols printed on the bottom.

How could anyone say this is "unattractive?" Nothing could top the current generation and it's dust-collecting black grilles in terms of ugliness.

I think it looks great.

The PS2 is so dark that you can't even notice the lines unless you are staring at it.

I like the system design. It does look kind of...huge...but it's a step up from Revolution (looks like a cable modem) and 360 (just looks fawful).

The controller, no way in hell will that be the final design.

You know, the rectangular base that the curved part of the PS3 sits upon looks to be about the same size as a PS2.

I like the thought and care they've put into the controller. After playing a very frustrating game and throwing the controller against the wall in anger, this controller will instead curve away from the wall, loop back and fly into your hand, thereby saving huge costs of replacing broken controllers.

I like this move.

I was thinking that too just looking at it laying on it's side... We haven't heard any measurements yet but I wouldn't be surprised if length-wise it's similar to the PS2, but the CURVE part makes it taller than the PS2.

That controller scares me...

The controller frightens me.

Why don't they even switch the D-pad with the left analog stick? The stick should be in the primary place, not the pad. It's a simple switch that's need, imo.

i love the shiny black color... looks elegant. but the design of the system looks like the Panasonic 3DO system, which mean, ugly. i also think it looks absolutely huge. but maybe that's because i can't get something to relate its size to.

the controller, is just ... hideous.

is that a usb port at the back of the controller?

You know, now that you mention it...
hmmm

This system is more than a year away. I expect Sony to redesign the system and controller by then.

This all seems very placeholder.

I've studied this a bit more.

On a regular PS2, the power switch is about 15/16 inch wide (0.9375"),
while the whole console is 11.75 inches wide.

On that photo above, the power switch is about 36 pixels wide.
The lower base is about 444 pixels wide.
The whole unit is about 560 pixels wide.

Using proportions, that means the lower base is about 11.5" wide,
while the whole unit is about 14.5" wide (tall).

So there you go...

How else are you supposed to charge the controller?
Why do you think there are 4 USB ports on the front (bottom) of the PS3?

(Okay, I'm just guessing; but it makes sense, no?)

Its going to need some way to plug in/charge (assuming it uses built in rechargable battery, which only makes sense).

I've used some controllers with long handles like that, they're fairly comfortable to play with, though I'm hoping for something better than an elongated DS2 from Sony for this generation.

The controller color doesn't really match well even with the silver PS3 variant though, so that makes me feel a bit better about it possibly not being final.

Black PS3 looks the hottest. Gonna be weird putting my PS2 in a storage drawer :lol And man, I'm even excited about Blu-ray. Was already looking forward to that, as it's amazing technology itself, and now it's coming in a wonderful wonderful bundle. Blue-Ray is worth $300 itself, but hey, I'll take the most powerful console ever with it. And the controller I'm sure is comfortable, as damn ugly as it is.

Looks like it's designed to be a sole system under the TV to replace DVD, BR player PS1/PS2. Kinda smart, you can clearly see what their intentions are with it, but it's risky(kinda not really though seeing how it's gonna be the prime choice for everything anyway).

The controller is okay, doesn't need much change IMO... I wonder why it had to be so wide at the top though.
