So say they make an upgraded PS3 to set alongside the standard PS3 console unit, which emphasizes the enhanced media capabilities of the PS3... what would you want to see in it in addition to what the PS3 currently has, and how much would you pay for it?

For me, I'd definetly want a good sized hard drive in there... about 200 gigs at least (it doesn't have to be a 2.5" HD)... of course it'll have linux on it. Also the bluray drive should turn into a recordable bluray drive... throw in a HD tuner and a more stylish design, akin to the bluray player prototype and finally a remote control to tie it all together, and I'd be willing to splash out 550-600$ or even more on such a unit.

I thought that's how much the standard PS3 is going to cost :lol

If you are looking at all those extra stuff, you are looking at something close to the PSX, which cost close to $1000...

If I had the money, I would be willing to pay like 600 dollars for that. But since we have no idea how much the basic system will cost, making an assumption like this is hard.

What are the "enhanced media capabilities" of the PS3 and what would this said device add to them other than recording and linux (which we should be getting from the PS3 HDD anyway)?

Just a HD DVR + burner? Why does it need to be related to the PS3 then?

I'd probably pay 600 also for a "PS3 Home Theater" edition that does functions similar to ones listed.
If everything was fleshed out (IE, channel listing like Replay TV updated daily via internet), i'd pay upwards of 7, or even 800 dollars for a set top box like that with a 3 year warenty.

I guess I'm the only one who interpreted that as something to own in addition to a PS3 not as a replacement to it. :)

I would buy a "PSX3" if in addition to the stuff listed it acted as an IPTV server so I could stream TV to my PC over gigabit through the PS3. Out there, yes, but it'd be nice. :)

or just buy a shuttle media PC?

Do you know how much it would cost to kit out a Hi-Def oriented Media PC with a BR recorder?

Not even considering the fact that all the components don't necessarily integrate smoothly.

Nah, I meant like the PSX is to the PS2. Not an add on unit or some such.

"Do you know how much it would cost to kit out a Hi-Def oriented Media PC with a BR recorder?"

why would i want to limit myself to a Bluray recorder (which i'd imagine is gonna be damned expensive for a while (PC component wise) when i can whack 400 gig hdds in there at $140 a pop??

I'd say you could build a Hi-Def oriented Media PC easily for $500-$600.

I would pay that if they allowed me to use a DS1 instead of a banana...

Nah seriously...So much money for what ? I want a PS3 just for games...I don't give a fuck about online gaming/HDDs/media playing capabilities or anything like this...Just games. With PS2 I barelly use the media capabilities...and with PSP...well it's another matter :) I would have paid more for a PSP with a better screen and a better D-PAD :P

Are you serious? Because I'll do it if it's reasonable. But I don't think you can...

keeping in mind the PC has to be fast enough, have a case, good RAM, good video card, etc, etc...

and if not a BR recorder then what? DVD recorder? Well, that's nice, but it's not exactly HD. The other option is a HDDVD recorder, but still that would be pretty pricey as well.

The tight integration of software and hardware is a bonus, but Win XP is a pretty servicable interface for HD media for someone like me.

And where the hell are you getting 400 gig HDs for 140?! You need to hook me up!

What's your point?

My point isn't about all those features being useless...but about being useless to a consumer like me.
It's not that I think I'll use them so I don't need them. I use my consoles to play games...And the PC for whatever else (seeing media, emus, playing music, etc.). Keep in mind my Tv is 14" so I don't have the excuse of being better to enjoy films or playing retrogames since the PC and its bigger screen (17") is better.

Of course I am an exception here where people with 53" monster TVs do really enjoy and use some of those features. I do see your point in wanting those things though.

it's the same problem for me, if the price is inflated by alot of features I'm not going to use then I'm not going to pay it, the gaming is the premium feature and for me the only one worthwhile at this point in time so if I have to pinch pennies I will

I don't question the necessity of these features though, Sony has established that this is their place in the market, that they want to be more than a gaming machine, but when I hear that I hear it as saying they have cause not to price competitively with other gaming machines

I mean, what's the point of posting in this thread? I know they're people that wouldn't want or need those features... but this thread is about people that want more from the PS3, and what kinda stuff it is they want and what price they'd pay for it.

is it not reputable to say $0?

and perhaps participating in this thread will yield some insight giving cause to reevaluate this stance

Get outta here and stop derailing this into another, the PS3 doesn't need so many features thread.

don't be so unreasonable, I'm here with an open mind

Well, the PS3 should still be priced competitively... but to do so, its missing out on some features that could really position it as the ultimate centerpiece of a the home entertainment network.

But I'd think the solution for them would be to release 2 versions of the PS3 like with the PS2 and the PSX, but this time doing it much earlier, and not having so many bugs and problems in it!

I'd think an early release of a sony product without bugs or problems is something of a pipe dream

ultimately I'd prefer a two-tiered system, not all of that stuff seems necessary, sony is a bit ahead anyways, they've lost me, that's for sure, it took me 'til 2000 to start getting DVDs, I'm always behind the curve, I don't really see the need even for the Blu Ray format let alone anything beyond that, so try and bear with me I'm taking baby steps here

the only trouble I see is being intimidated by alot of expensive stuff I have no use for and then, a couple years down the road, I might actually want it

Ok. No, just shut the hell up and get out of this thread. "I don't need a BRD, whine whine whine." Idiot.
