They didn't want to put "XBox 2" up against "Playstation 3." By naming it "XBox 360," you have a "3" in the title as well.

I had never seen this explanation before, it actually makes sense.

Xbox 720 makes some sense because it's an easy name to market. "The next revolution" and all.

Just a hunch but I imagine when it comes time to seriously work on building the next generation Xbox, there is going to be a lot of political infighting at Microsoft over what it should be. There will be camps demanding it be HD and focused on "core" gamers, camps demanding it be a Wii clone, and even camps saying to not waste their time with another console.
