PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

Also did we talk about that Foxconn rumor yet? That one chinese factory (where A LOT of the broken PS4s come from) has apparently bricked consoles on purpose due to bad work environment/salary issues etc?

I don't even want to imagine what happens if that turns out true.
No point in saying stuff like this here.

I'm actually flabbergasted that Sony have fucked up a HDMI port, they're sooo good with hardware. How did that happen?

I obviously have no hard facts to back this up, but it seems to me that the HDMI port isn't that major of a problem. Seems like blue light of death is number one, and that seems to have nothing to do with the HDMI port.

I actually think the HDMI is putting out some sort of signal on my BLOD unit. My receiver detects it and automatically switches to it when it's turned on, and stays there even when I turn something else on, meaning it is continuing to get some sort of signal from it.

No point in saying stuff like this here.

It was sabotage. Santa got some elves in there to fuck shit up 'cause he's trying to get more contract work for his North Factory in time for the holiday season.

Jeez, we starting to play pass the buck already? I blame communism.
;)

Back in reality, reports of cheap hdmi ports etc isn't suprises. They had to hit that anazing price point somehow. Dispite reports to the contrary, they aren't wizards!

Yeah this poor system was put together all sorts of wrong. I think the cooling fan may not be mounted properly in there. The system blacked out last night and all I could get was the blinking blue light. I tried a few things, but nothing came of it. The console itself was very hot but never made any warning or indications of overheating.

I tried again this morning, I was able to get it to start, but when I put my hand on it to check the temperature, it made a loud screeching noise and died immediately. If my hand can cause the fan in there to make that noise, something is up.

It's from the factory of the damned. Imma continue my quest to talk to sony.

Probably not true it just sounds like one of those made up stories on the internet but I wouldn't be upset at all if it were true. I feel for those workers.

All these issues people are having with their PS4s is giving me anxiety. I don't get mine till Monday - Tuesday. It seems the 1.5 update is messing up consoles, so am just going to keep mine in the box till Sony releases a new update that might fix these issues.

I think that them being underage inexperimented students is enough for them to fuck up unwillingly

It screeched at you when you tried to touch it? :O Maybe it's posessed? That explains the static screen thing too.

Seriously though, that really sucks man. Hope you get through to Sony and get it sorted.

Should ask here instead

Powered off my ps4 but now it's stuck on a black screen with a spinning circle. Never fully shut down. Wat do?

I'm afraid to unplug it. Been stuck there for like five minutes.

Also is everyone getting like 99 notifications that all pop up one by one? It's like "contrast ready to install"..."contrast could not download"..."resogun ready to install"..."resogun could not download" over and over.

Not a problem but more of a technical question. I've been trying to figure out whether standby or shut off is the way to go for the PS4 when leaving it for long periods of time (overnight etc). One thing I've noticed is that Standby =/= Off. There's still a (very faint) humming from the machine when the orange LED is on. Anybody else notice this? I assumed standby would be like the PS3's mode where the red led light was on and power off was analogous to the PS3's mode where the little switch at the side was toggled and all lights were off.

That sounds like software issue, not hardware.

Semi software?

Here's some tips for first boot to the PS4.

Keep it off the internet if you are at a college that doesn't have personal routers or login internet, as I guarantee it will constantly crash (in my case).

If you are updating, don't plug it into a power strip but instead the wall or a surge protector. When you update the PS4 draws a lot of power, so it will turn off if it doesn't not get the required power. In this case it is not an issue of whether it is overheating.

Yes they definitely went cheap with some parts, hdmi, shell looks a bit cheap also, wonder what else?

Yeah the exterior and ports all seem rather cheap. Personally though I have built all my gaming PCs with cheaper parts like this and never had an issue because I am careful when them.

I don't think they took shortcuts on the insides though, as we would be seeing overheating problems like crazy. Ultimately I think people need to just be aware that this is not physically built the same as the PS3 (I mean hell its half as heavy). I find that acceptable for the price though.

Just be gentle folks!

(Side note, they did not skimp on the controller. This thing is soooo good).

What? That's nothing but pure speculation.

Standby is a lower power consumption mode, but it is still on (OS is still running). It is meant to be a safe way to keep your PS4 on and read to go (downloading games or just waiting for you to come back) instead of just keeping it on.

So is the HDMI cable problems just bad luck?-

I seriously think its a mixture of bad luck and cheap components. The socket metal bends easy, so this could happen during production or when someone is putting an HDMI cable in (applying too much pressure or coming at it from a weird angle).

The first thing I checked with mine was to make sure the socket was clean with no malformations. Then I spent nearly a minute just gently getting the HDMI in there (paranoid I suppose).

Giantbomb in their unboxing made a good point that it is very hard to put cables in while looking down or at the front of the unit (due to how hidden they are and the angle). I suspect if people try the "blind" insert (as I have with everything lol) you can junk up that socket easier.

Yeah I looked at mine too and it was fine but I made sure not to just try and jam it in there. I got a yantai september 2013 and I'm just playing it as much as I can everyday to see if it breaks. So far no issues other than software stuff like NBA 2k causes my audio to mess up sometimes.

My ps4 seems to be functioning fine for a device made in china. Hooked it up using my old hdmi cable(nyko one), updated the fw to 1.5 without a hitch.

Since I don't have any games yet(thanks amazon for preparing my shipment for 4 days!)
can't say if it'll play any games. Maybe I'll just stop by my local target and pickup some games.

I'm like walking on egg shells here.. So I booted it up, turned on just fine, prompted for the update and let it do it's thing while chanting voodoo rituals...

One the update finished the console powered itself off way too fast IMO, it played a little jingle that seemed to cut off before it finished playing, this scared me. I walked over to the unit and saw a white light.. I'm sweating now...

Instead of turning the unit back on from the power button , I pressed the ps button on the controller and it turned right on..

Currently downloading resogun

The port may be shitty, but it's not the cause of 95% of the issues. Neither is the packaging or that the device shifted in transit.

There is clearly something wrong with the internals with these BLOD cases. :(

This news fucked up my mood, i have 2 PS4 DualShock 4 Bundle from amazone , 1 for me and 1 for my brother,
and I'm not there to test them yet, i will be in few days but the waiting to find out is killing me, god I'm angry

some question:

1- Anyone with PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 Bundle ?
2- Any defect or problem?
3- What is the manufacture date for this Bundle?

i don't know if there's a difference between bundles but DS4 bundle came later in august unlike the other

If that is the case why is alot of them brought to light after the 1.5 update? - or is that seemingly a separate issue

Has anyone taken the plunge and actually opened up a failed PS4 and attempt to diagnose it? I can't imagine any normal user would waste their warranty like that but perhaps there's something out there?

I'd be curious to see what's happening on the insides.

True, there is something funky going on (seems software related from what I have seen of others) on the inside. Just kind of salt on the wound when you can cause worse problems due to the cheap socket. At least that issue is somewhat preventable though.

Ugh had another OS freeze and couldn't reset it holding down the power button so I had to pull the power plug. This is the third time I had to this in the two days I've had it. I'm hoping it's just an OS issue but I can't keep doing this every time as sooner or later it's going to wreck the system.

Is anyone having issues connecting their controllers to the Playstation 4? Both the controller that came with the system, as well as the one I just purchased aren't working. It just blinks white and won't sync. I've tried every USB port on the damned system.

Was all happy I got a replacement order put in last night when they had them back in stock. Just got an email saying they are back-ordered and that I can go fuck myself (contact Sony).

Why the fuck were you selling them last night if they're back-ordered? I find it hard to believe that everyone who ordered last night are being told they're sold out and having their orders cancelled.

WOW. That is really insult to injury. I'm usually a big supporter of Amazon but the way they've handled this so far has been extremely poor.

1. First they tell preorder customers, many of whom have been waiting in line since June, that their DOA units cannot be replaced because they don't have any stock.

2. Suddenly, bundles. Amazon starts selling PS4s to new customers, not even 24 hours after refusing to replace systems on grounds of stock shortage.

3. "oh whoops, something is wrong with your order so contact Sony to wait +1 month to get your supposedly launch day console fixed trololool"

At this point I'm just glad that my Knack bundle (bought last night to replace my DOA launch edition) actually shipped out. If they had told me it was backordered I would have hit the fucking roof.

Am I the only one who's notification system is going crazy? I turned on my system to 99 notifications that Contrast is ready to install and they won't stop popping up.

Man, in a way, I'm kind of glad that I have to wait an extra week for my system as I'm hoping Sony will release some sort of OS update.

I'm wondering if cboat's OS problem rumors were intended for PS4. :P

Man I'm gonna torture test mine into the ground. If it's gonna die I want it to die quick and fast so I can get it replaced.

From what I've read, it seems obvious to me that it's not an overheating issue. It seems like the kind of problem that will happen unexpectedly and not because of continuous usage.

Yea I'm hoping it is an OS issue because I don't want to have to return it and wait for stock to come back in. Regardless I'm having fun with it when it works properly.

Yeah, I don't think overheating is an issue (right now). I had my system on for about 14 hours straight.

Someone earlier asked if anyone has successfully accessed the safe menu after a BLOD. As I mentioned earlier in the thread,I have recovered from a BLOD twice. Once after Amazon Video crashed and once after the system failed to recover from standby. The first time took multiple attempts of turning the system on and off via the power button. The second time I had to leave the system unplugged for a few minutes.

Yeah, it's absolutely ridiculous that they are telling me they can't fulfill my replacement when they were selling them last night. Their system let me put in for a replacement because they fucking had them. I'm sure they just decided they'd rather have another unit to sell and send me to Sony rather than help me out.

I sent them a nice email bitching at them about their response. I wasn't flipping out cussing at them or anything, but I made it clear that I felt I was being fucked in favor of new sales. We'll see if they respond at all.

I'm off Monday-Wednesday this week. I was happy to get that order in last night thinking it'd arrive Tuesday (and hopefully not be dead). Then they decided to piss all over me instead.

From what I've read, it seems obvious to me that it's not an overheating issue. It seems like the kind of problem that will happen unexpectedly and not because of continuous usage.

Yeah, I've only seen one person of here who had theirs overheat, and it was because his fans stopped working all together. I'm sure their are probably more, but it seems like BLOD is the number one killer and is some sort of hardware problem.

Any estimates yet on percentage affected? This is starting to sound like a lot more than .4 that's for sure.

Also, any incidents of BLOD after working for many hours and turned off and on many times? Mine seems fine but if it can happen later uggggh.

Did Cerny's soothing voice mislead us!?

If you've got PS4 trouble, I feel bad for you son. I got problems, but 99 notifications ain't one.

But seriously, mine's been smooth sailing (knock on wood). I really feel for each and every one of you.
