PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

I had this happen today. My setup is such: 360 connected to TV via HDMI, PS4 connected to TV via HDMI. TV optical out to receiver. 360 was on first and then I switched to PS4. No audio on PS4. I assume because the receiver prioritized the 360. I switched back to the PS4 input on the TV, shut off the receiver and turned it back on and it gave priority for audio to PS4.

Hmm my PS4 seems to be overheating a lot. I moved it to a completely open area but if it happens again I'll probably have to call Sony and ask to replace the thermal paste or something with the fan as everything else about the console works perfectly.

The area I had it before was open and had good air flow. I was playing Resogun for about 1 hour before it beeped and shutdown on me. It got really loud too. I'm hopeing its just a fan problem that can be solved without replacing the entire console.

You need to return that PS4. I've played for hours at a time without it getting very warm.

Ok I'll call the Sony store tomorrow and see if they can fix it. If not then a return to Amazon it is for me. :(

Okay, my blu-ray drive is now driving me nuts, is going to a Sony store faster than getting a coffin mailed out? Do I need to bring anything except the console? I'm going to take out my 1tb. Does the PS4 format HDDs before they can be used like the PS3?

Not sure if this is a good place to ask it, but I guess its kinda a ps4 issue. I have my PS4 hooked up to an hdmi switch alongside my computer and everything works fine when I have the ps4 on, it'll display on the monitor normally. But if I try to put it in standby, it will switch to my PC like I would expect it to, but after like a minute, it will try to switch back to the ps4 input even though there's no hdmi signal from it. Anyone know of a way to prevent the signal somehow so it doesn't switch?

Tried detaching and reattaching the HDMI cable, but I'm still only getting music and sound effects and NO SPEECH. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I've tried different HDMI cables and ports, and I've changed the settings on the PS4 a few times, and this problem keeps happening. I can hear speech in games via the headphones, but not through the television. I'd think that if there was an actual sound problem, it would affect all the sound, not just the speech in games. Right now, I have to play everything via headphones or else I can't hear anyone talking (and I'm not referring to voice chat; I am specifically having no in-game dialogue in cutscenes and through NPCs).
Your system is clearly trying to play speech through a nonexistent center channel. I assume you lack a surround sound setup?

I do; it is only stereo. The strangeness is that sometimes audio comes through, sometimes it doesn't. Maybe it is because during missions that dialogue is done in non surround sound? Is there something I can change on the PS4 to ameliorate this?

Mine has been getting pretty warm, but I haven't noticed much fan noise until tonight. Also get a lot of vibration when starting it up every once in a while from the disk drive.

NBA 2k14 made my PS4 freeze a few times today. I tried to buy some players for street mode and it would freeze trying to communicate with the 2K servers. Scared the crap out of me as I had to hard reset a couple of times.

For those with HDMI input issues:

I posted earlier about my receiver not recognizing the PS4 input, while my PS3 worked no problem. I could only get HDMI signal directly through my TV. I followed this guide and it solved (for now) all my issues. It seems once this sequence is performed the first time, it is good until the hardware is turned off from the wall again.

Source: http://www.hdcabling.co.za/hdcp_hdmi_handshake_troubleshooting_guidelines.php

Recommended Power-up sequence to reduce HDCP / HDMI Handshake problems - Also used when changing or connecting HDMI sources, distribution equipment or displays

1. Power-off all equipment (At the wall socket).
2. Ensure all Cables, Splitters, Switches, Extenders are connected within the HDMI Distribution Network.
3. Power on all Splitters, Switches, Extenders within HDMI Distribution Network.
4. Power on all displays and set to HDMI input from HDMI Distribution Network (Source device need to be able to contact display to retrieve EDID information)
5. Power on Sources / Players. Ensure that a path is open from source to display for HDCP handshake negotiation by selecting the proper input on HDMI Switches or HDMI switch/splitter combo's via the remote control (Sources negotiates HDCP Handshake via HDMI Network to displays which is set to HDMI input to respond to handshake).

Some displays will negotiate HDCP handshake / timing better if the source are already powered on and you may need to change points 3,4,5 above to 4,3,5 or 4,5,3 depending on your equipment.

This may be a real newbie mistake I've been making all this time, I had no idea you needed to power everything down from the wall first. I also didn't know that "hot-plugging" cables was a bad thing...

EDIT: it recommends switching everything off from the wall for at least 10 seconds.

2K is pretty buggy software don't let it scare you into thinking hardware is breaking.

I'm still waiting on my PS4 but this problem also could exist on PS3 if you didn't manually select the proper audio output.

The issue here is that many TVs indicate to the system that they are capable of receiving surround sound input and, as a result, the PS3/4 will playback surround audio. On PS3, this would occur if you ran through the automatic audio setup. Can you manually select and deselect supported audio types on PS4? That's what you would need to do.

Sound works from the controller as it downmixes to stereo.

Amazon PS4 imported to Australia, played about 4 hours so far with no issues

I was thinking about taking advantage in this recent Best Buy deal. Trade your working ps3 (or 360) in for a $100 gift card (all parts included). Deal ends this Saturday, at least around where I live.
This question has probably been asked a million times already, but at this point, I don't know if there is a way around it or an answer coming in the future.

Can you transfer and/or use PS3 saves on a PS4?

I don't like the idea of formatting my PS3 and losing all of those save files before giving it up to Best Buy. Too much time and effort went into those saves, so what are my options? I understand that PS+ allows you to upload your save data to the cloud, but if I do so, can I retrieve those save files and download them to my PS4?
OR, is the "Backup Utility" feature in the PS3 System Settings another option? It says I can back up things like saved data, imgs, music, etc on to a compatible USB Drive, but can I then hook that USB Drive up to a PS4 and upload all that backed up data there?

I'd prefer the latter option, because i don't own PS+ right now. I don't plan on buying it until I purchase a PS4 when Destiny comes out next year. So, buying PS+ just for my "save" files seems a little extreme. And I don't even know what happens to your cloud saves when the subscription ends. Say I buy the cheapest/shortest subscription to PS+ and upload everything. Will it delete all of those files when my sub runs out?

Also, I would like to know if next-gen games in the future will benefit from previous saves. Like Dragon Age Inquisition. Didn't Bioware say they were working on a solution for transferring your save files? Same deal with Blizzard. Aren't PS3 saves going to transfer to the PS4 version of Diablo 3?

AFAIK you can make limited or zero use of PS3 saves on PS4 as you can't play the games. Best bet would be backing up all saved data to the cloud storage or to a usb stick. (Recently used cloud storage when changing my PS3 hard drvie; works a charm! If you have under 1gb of save files ofc) Hope that helps!

I was having problems with my audio and video flickering out and I finally decided to contact Amazon about getting a replacement console. From what I had read I wasn't too confident that I would get a replacement. I emailed them earlier today and they already set up a new order that's supposed to be here wednesday, I just have to send them my old one now.

omg omg omg omg i just got my system.

machine turned on no problem.

no funny disk drive sound. not a single scratch on the system. hdmi working fine. updating right now. omg i am so happy so happy.

i am updating the system right now. i hope everything is fine when i am done.

i am really so happy sniff sniff.

i love you guys/gals. ... unless it breaks in the next few lol

Edit: does the ps4 make a weird ticking sound when its restarting or something while updating . I heard it few times while it update restarting the console

I think fan noise levels for PS4 are very dependent on what game you are playing, when playing KZ:S the fan has the tendency to spool up to the point that I can hear it, but when playing warframe the fan noise is nonexistence. I'd recommended that any one with multiple games give it a try.

Yeah that's normal it's just the hard drive.

Is there a way to reset the system without unplugging it? And does Blacklight Retribution suffer the same problem?

Hold down the power button for 7+ seconds. And yes blacklight and a few other games are also causing crashes.

Knack froze about 4-5 times in co op last night and if I waited long enough during the freeze I would actually get a crash report to pop up on reboot. But is knack having issues freezing for anyone else? I mean it was randomly after 30 minutes. Then finally after our last freeze it didn't do it again for the rest of the night, I wonder if co op has issues.

I have some strange sound issues. I set my controller to shut off after 30 mins of inactivity. and sometimes(1/3 of the time so far)when it shuts off and I turn it back on, everything is muted and I can't get it to come back on without restarting the PS4.

how about when you put in the blue and it goes to the game. do you hear the sound of the blue ray spinning fast for like few seconds ? after that i hear nothing . dead quite.

Blu ray is going to be loud when disc is reading for the first few seconds.... Have you heard how loud the drive is when it's transferring all the data to the hdd....after that the disc drive is no longer used. Only time you will hear the drive is on initial game boot or when it's installing data from the drive to the hdd

I just boot up my PS4 for the first time. White light = normal or faulty? Things seems to be fine so far. I'm just paranoid since I got this from Amazon, please give me an answer anyone? xD

My PS4 is going in for replacement today. My issue hasn't been like what I've seen others report. I think I got a faulty power supply on mine. It just shuts down randomly. Sometimes immediately, sometimes after 30-40 minutes, but usually in the first few minutes. It'll hang, then power off. I tried two outlets, plugging it into a UPS that regulates voltage, I tried two hard drives, I tried reflashing the firmware and replacing the OS (on the 2nd HD of course), nothing remedied it so I got Sony Support on their live chat yesterday and they're sending me a coffin.

Here's what mine does (51s video)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab7DJthrB5c

what firmware? DL the latest
purchased from where? Amazon
what is your A/V set up like? 46 inch plasma 1080p
what resolution do you want to output in? 1080p
were you able to get any video signal or none at all? yes
can you hear audio? yes

I just started installing killzone and my ps4 is emitting a horrible and unnatural buzzing noise. Is thing normal? I have it on a flat surface.

Anyone have any ideas? Is this natural. I don't think it is, but I thought I'd post here first.

SO earlier I posted about my Ps4 occasionally no having any audio when I wake it from standby mode, and that a restart resolves the issue.

I also managed to fix it just now without a restart, but by simply removing the HDMI cable from the Ps4 and then plugging it back in.

So given that, does it seem like the Ps4 is causing the issue of occasionally not having sound, or my HDMI cable/TV?

Is this the right place to talk about voice chat issues, or is this a hardware issue only thread?

If this isn't the right place, sorry! If it is... anyone having serious issues with voice chat?

Tried both party chat and in-game chat for FIFA 14 with both the regular pack-in headset and iPhone headset (don't judge, it's the only other one I had lying around the house). Had consistent problems hearing two different friends; both of them also reported back that they could hear everything from my end, like the sound of me pushing buttons on the controller.

Is this a known thing or just me?

“There have been several issues reported, which leads us to believe there isn’t a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of PS4 units,” a Sony representative tells Game Informer. “We also understand that some units were reportedly damaged during shipping. The number of affected PS4 systems is less than 1%, which represents a very small percentage of total units shipped to date and is within the expected range for a new product introduction. We understand the frustration of consumers that have had a problem and are working with them and our retail partners to help troubleshoot issues and ensure affected units are exchanged”

“SCEA is exchanging units with new replacements for those who call our support line,” he says. “The exchanges are immediate with expedited shipping.”

I want to get the Sony extended warranty through the psn store, but if I do it will be tied to that console and is nontransferable should I exchange this ps4 at the store I purchased it from.

Right as of now everything seems to be running fine, no hardlocks, no freezing, etc., but I am wondering what I should watch/listen for?
Is there anything I may not be noticing that is an indication of potential issues?

Any advice or help anyone can offer me would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah it does. I think that's the hard drive spinning up.

Yep, its the exact same issue I had. I was never able to go 30-40 minutes though.

Have you checked the PlayStation website for extended warranty information yet? I'd start there, personally.

Called Sony Support today. Should get the package tomorrow to send my PS4 in to them.

Sad part is that my games are just coming in tomorrow as well. ;_;

Oh well better to be safe than sorry when my PS4 goes kaput due to me not switching it out. I actually want to play my games for more than one hour. lol

I can't connect to the EA servers on PS4. Every other console I try with works. 360, Vita, PS3.

I'm playing Fifa if it matters.

Anyone know what could be up?
