PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

Its alot quieter horizontal. Is yours vertical or horizontal?

Horizontal. I just checked both my ps4 running GZ and my ps3 running MGSHD using a smartphone app (don't know how accurate those sound level apps are) and my ps3 is actually quieter than my ps4 during gameplay! I know my ps3 is definitely louder when I play games like TLoU, but I certainly didn't expect the ps4 to be so loud. The fans seem to run loudest at the title screen for some reason.

This is my setup. Lots of clearance all around the ps4.

Should I get a replacement?

Two questions, is my PS4 supposed to get hot like warm water hot because I have the PS4 near a wall, the gap is 6-8 inches? Am I screwing up the ventilation from the back?

Also, should I get the Protection Plan?

Just got a DOA PS4.

A model manufactured in January 2014, no less. So apparently they still have duds 2 months after launch, bleh.

I carefully checked the HDMI port and cable for problems, nothing. And the first HDMI cable I plugged into it still works fine with other devices. Safe mode does not work, holding down power only turns the console back off after the second beep.

Just opened a service case, waiting for the return box now.

When I play thief (just got it) the optical drive is constantly powering up and stopping. Powering up and stopping. Almost sounds like it's screeching to a halt. It made me really worried so I haven't touched it since. Normal?

I wouldn't worry about it. Mine is definitely not super quiet either, but it does not bother me. Unless its extremely loud or making weird noise its likely normal. Seems to depend on the game too how loud mine is.

Ah thanks. I googled a bit and saw that some people had silent ps4's even under heavy load playing killzone so I thought perhaps mine had a problem. Moved it to the left away from my receiver as that was producing a lot of heat and the fan seems to have gotten a little quieter. Hope they opt for a bigger or quieter fan paired with a die shrink for the next revision!

Edit: Anyone else have squeaky triggers? Tried getting my ds4 replaced by amazon and they refunded me 100$ off the ps4 price instead lol. Love amazon.

I sent in my PS4 a couple weeks ago for glitchy/lagging controller input and choppy sound through the controllers' headphone jacks. To my surprise, Sony sent me back a brand new unit, manufactured this month. Pretty great. It totally made me forget about the fact that they originally sent my return-coffin to the wrong address 150 miles away.

So how much time does it usually take to receive a "return coffin"? Are they using overnight shipping? (I bet not)

They say they do 1-day shipping on it, I think. But I put my service request through on a Saturday and didn't receive it until the following Friday. I even contacted them again and they acted as if everything was normal but I think something went wrong.

Thanks for the info. Put my service request in this past Saturday and my case number doesn't show anything yet on the online status search. The 800 number says there is an issue with my service request. Weird. Anyone else have this?

I got through on the phone and the agent reviewed my case and verified the information with no issues. So I guess it's back to being patient, which I suck at.

My experience (had 4 boxes shipped to me, 2 systems sent back) is that the box takes 3-5 days to get to you. It comes from Fort Wayne, Indiana (if you're in the US).

Shipping back to the facility is standard ground, so another 3-5 days, and then once they have it is generally 3-5 days for them to process your system and ship you a new one. When they ship the new one, it's overnighted to you. Total RMA process takes, on average (for me, YMMV), 2-2.5 weeks, and I live within one day ground shipping of the RMA center. Sony will probably fail to send you the proper email with the tracking numbers, as well, so a pro tip is you can go to FedEx.com and track shipment by reference number and put in your service request #, country and your zip code and you can track your package that way.

In my experience over the past three months, Sony's support is a total mess so don't be surprised if you have to call them multiple times before they process a RMA request properly. If you have severe issues getting them to do anything like I did, PM me, I have the direct phone number to the executive of customer service. One call to him will get your problem sorted straight away. That's how I finally had to resolve my issue.

Good luck!

How loud is the ps4 supposed to get while gaming? Got the system with ground zeroes last week and it's as loud as my fat 80gb ps3. I can hear it even when I have heaphones on

My ps4 is quiet when playing games do you mean the disc drive? I have all digital so no clue about that part.

I know your pain, brah. My very first PS4 was a dud. Dead on arrival. Same issue as yours: Blue Line of Death, unable to access Safe Mode, no video, no issues with HDMI port or cable.

I actually felt my heart stopping completely when the Blue Line of Death appeared and didnt' go away on the very first time I turned it on. It was the very first defective console I got in my entire gaming life. I was like "Oh God, you've got to be kidding me."

Sent it back to Sony and they gave me a new console which works. Now I'm a happy panda =).

How quiet is it? Can you measure the sound it makes under heavy load using a meter or a smartphone app and post the results? My ps4 can get as high as 50dB on the app I used. I can definitely tell the difference between the disc drive and fan.

Thinking it's time for me to call Sony support. :( Started playing Second Son on Sunday and have had three instances where my console glitches and shuts off. This has happened before weeks ago during heavy bouts of BF4. Did the whole process where I wiped the hard drive and re-installed the OS; seemed to help for a bit, but apparently not for good. Ugh.

I had some problems with the image and sound failing whike playing second son, it was like half a second or so but happened quite frequently. I decided to change the HDMI on my TV and it stopped. But then I was playing BF4 onde day and the sound failed some two or three times, same thing, very quickly. But it's BF4, so.....

Lets be clear on measuring sound hear. If you have the option, make sure whatever measuring device your using is calibrated. A normal conversation should be around 60db. Also, you all need to be measuring from the same distance. Being closer is of course going to be louder than being 10ft away. You probably shouldn't be measuring the sound 5 inches from its vents because your obviously not going to play games with the systems vents taped to the side of your ears. That close and the mic will also be picking up air blowing on the mic. Its like when someone is blowing into a mic. You normally wouldn't be able to hear it but because the air is rushing over the mic, creating friction and then being amplified; it seems a lot louder. Last, make sure the rest of the room is quite. If you cant get a pre test number in your room below ten, you can consider subtracting your pre test number from the final because that sound is obviously not diapering.

My PS3 Fat and 360 are super load compared to my PS4. My PC that sits right beside them has them all beat though.

This is what mine was doing. A quick flicker then 1-2 seconds later, off. I could play a couple hours and then have to wait several in order to get it to start again. I rebuilt the database and installed the OS from scratch but it didn't help.

I called Sony on Saturday. They shipped the coffin FedEx on Monday (from Indiana, like birdcity said) & I received it Tuesday. Their online status system still hasn't updated with anything like a simple "Your box has shipped" but I received an email last night that my box was coming and included the tracking #s. The process could be a little better but I'm still satisfied at this point. Plus I'm taking the opportunity to go to a 1.5 TB HDD.

Thanks for the detailed post, that was very informative.

I'm in Canada though, I sure hope they have a service center within the country, or else it's definitely going to take forever for the back and forth.

Sorry if this has been asked already but anyone know a fix for no sound when I turn on my PS4? I am running HDMI right into back of my tv. I have to re-enter stand by mode and turn ps4 back on for sound to come back.

thanks!

No problem! I am sure they have RMA centers set up in each country. I do not know about how they handle it in Canada, but in the US they use MTC for the RMAs (http://www.mtcservice.com/). You could probably hop on Sony chat and ask where the RMA centers for Canada are located!

Edit: Looks like MTC has a location in Whitby, Ontario. Not sure if they use MTC in Canada or not, though.

Whats the background dB? Mine is around 20 dB, my PS4 idiling is 21-22dB. Full load 26-30 dB. All these measurements are very close to the system(10 cm away, front).

So I have a question, probs wrong thread but didn't see a software / general FAQ one.

So is my real name displayed here just for me to see? I don't have show real name box checked so i'm guessing everyone else sees my PSN tag but only I see my real name right?

Yes, you're okie doke.

i get stuff like this too but every device is effected PC, PS4, 360. it ranges from random black lines, black flashing, and the artifacting you see here. simply changing the input back and forth on the AV receiver fixes the issue. it seems to be a HDMI handshaking problem. the problem is very rare though so it only happens like once a month.

Thanks! I thought it was my PS4, but the last time it happened I simply took the HDMI cable out of the TV and put it back in and the problem went away.

My PS4 turned itself on yesterday. Earlier tonight, while I was playing Killzone, it turned itself off (it's done this a few times now). Now I just walked into my room and the system was stuck in safe mode (rebooting it would always go back to safe mode, I had to power it off completely to break the loop).

Has anyone seen a similar problem?

So after I moved my router to a slightly higher spot my PS4 can no longer log into PSN. The internet connection test automatically fails as soon as it gets to the PSN part. Tried restoring system settings but that didn't help. Reset my router about 30 times and that didn't fix it either. Everything else including my PS3/Vita are fine, anyone else experienced this?

I picked one up recently, and I'm just using the WWE app and this thing is launch XB360 noise levels loud. Is this normal? It was loud as hell on the MGSGZ launch screen too which I figured was just the disc drive, but even streaming video this thing is loud.

No.

I can't even hear mine when it's on, other than the initial disc spin up when I launch a game, and that is very quiet.

Had a scare today. Out of the blue my second son disc just ejected and would not go back in. I feared the worst. I unplugged it for like an hour. It booted straight to safe mode. Then finally booted and I was able to use the disc. I hope this was JUST a one off and I do not have to countdown until it breaks.

mine is quite loud when playing games like killzone and infamous so far, less so for other disc games and some psn games, and fairly quiet when streaming netflix. If yours is loud all the time and not just selectively under heavy loads i'd definitely exchange it. I ended up returning mine for another one because of the noise but the new one i got was the same as before.

its probably nothing but all of a sudden my ps4 fans are making a fluttery noise and not the usual consistent one
its annoying but I'll deal with it if its normal

Sony is now sending me 5 consecutive duplicate emails every single fucking day about the return box they sent one week ago. Really annoying. Did anyone else get something like this?

Ya dont worry. I've test it cuz it threw me off at first too!

Today my PS4 randomly shut off in the middle of playing infamous. I thought it was a power outage at first until I noticed all my other tetechnology was on. Checked the plugs and what not, and I got it to turn back on a few minutes later.

Later at night while I was out my wife tried to turn it on but said it wasn't responding. When I got home I was able to turn it on by pushing power on the console (she had only tried the controller to power on). Start playing some infamous, and 30 minutes in it randomly shuts off. Now if I hit power, it just beaps once and nothing happens. I don't believe it overheated in either case as it is ventilated.

So probably gonna try it again tomorrow and if it keeps up, guess I'm at the mercy of Sony customer service, eh?

Gonna ask here but how do you transfer screenshots from the ps4 to pc? Without uploading to the social sites. Oh and the ps4 I've been using has this weird bug where I cant preview the screenshots I took with the share button lately. One more question, how do you record gameplay? Im still confused whether pressing the share button starts recording or does it take the last 15minutes of gameplay after pressing and store it.

I'm still having the issue where my DS4 works fine until I enter a game and then stops working. None of the face buttons, d-pad, etc. work, just the Share and Options button. Using a USB keyboard to navigate I shut down the application and, upon return to the XMB, the DS4 starts working fine again. Seems some other have seen this issue:

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/...ock-4-freezing-after-hitting-ps-button-2.html
http://community.eu.playstation.com...ames-help/m-p/21155553/highlight/false#M17185

Have any of you seen this?

I've tried resetting the controller, rebuilding the database, and initializing the system. I'm reluctant to take apart the controller as it is under warranty. Unfortunately I don't have access to another DS4 so can't rule out the controller completely. One odd thing is that while the keypad entry dialog is up I hear rapid beeping -- stuck button perhaps?

Finally, probably unrelated, but I leave my PS4 on standby. Does it eventually shut off completely if not powered on after a while? It takes several days but it seems it eventually shuts down.

Thanks!

Edit: The stuck button is definitely R1. In that keypad dialog if I hold down L1 to move the cursor left it is constantly being forced to the right (and, as such, not moving at all). I'll see if I can make the R1 unstick, I seem to remember something on YouTube about it.

When I play thief (just got it) the optical drive is constantly powering up and stopping. Powering up and stopping. Almost sounds like it's screeching to a halt. It made me really worried so I haven't touched it since. Normal?

Mine sounds like an RC car sometimes when it loads up a disc... I notice it reads it sometimes during the game, but I don't notice the same RC car sound.

Update on April 30th should take care of you.

All of the videos / articles are about a sticky R1 button -- in my case, even with the R1 button popped off the controller the controller still is sending the signal that R1 is being pressed. Anyone else seen this?

Sort of a round about way of doing it but at the moment another way of sending yourself a higher quality screenshot than what is shared on fb/twitter is to send a friend a screenshot through psn. View your sent messages in playstation mobile app, save to your phone and then upload it to whatever file sharing site you want. I created a separate psn id for this so I don't bug my friends.

actually mine was a little sticky at first but after several days of playing , it became "unstuck", don't know why

Well my perfect PS4 launch unit has started misbehaving. It has a very weak / noisy disk loading mechanism. Basically instead of grabbing the disk from my hand (like ever other front loading drive I have ever used) I have to kind of help the disk along with my finger. If I take my finger away the disk stops and I have to prod it along again until it eventually pulls the disk in all the way. While its doing this it make a continuous disk loading type noise. Feels like the loading mechanism is failing.

Anyway I've been suspecting its getting worse (may just be me) so I tested another PS4 unit today and that one pulled the disks in with no problems, in a stronger quieter manner than mine.

UPDATE: Sony Centre in the UK dont have anything to do with Playstation repairs so I called the support line instead. After being on hold for 40 mins I finally spoke to a helpful guy who said he had seen a few examples of the problem I have. So its time to print the returns label and send my baby off for repair. Id rather do it now before the bigger games start to come out I guess.

Will download Child of Light on Xbone to tide me over until the PS4 returns.

Hey guys. My ps4 has done this weird thing where it turns itself on and ejects whatever disc is inside refusing to take it back. Seemed to fix itself the first two times but after this third time I just need a replacement.

Anyone know the number I call?

Do they send me the Ps4 first or an empty box?

How long will it take to receive my new PS4?

You can go here for that info and it also has a link for Live Chat.

https://support.us.playstation.com/app/contact_options

It might take 10 minutes or so for the Live Chat to open up depending on how busy they are but it's IMO much faster and more convenient than calling in. But it took me about 2 or 3 weeks total for the whole process to get a new PS4.
