PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Any pics please?
Notifications is literally just a full page now with no categories and consist of everything except uploads and downloads. To see those you have to press options button to select and switch to a separate downloads or uploads page.

Not sure why they couldn't have kept it all on one page. No you have to do more commands to get to downloads.

Really impressed with this feature so far. Watched all of Tron: Legacy in 3D in my PSVR headset. No regrets.
i'm gutted, i didn't realise about the psvr update when i had the burner. It was far too late once i found out. I guess i will hop back on the burner when it's not busy lol

yeah i already commented in the beta forums. seems like there are a couple of threads already. another thing is you can't clear notifications anymore. notifications is basically what i hated about the 4.0 what's new feed. you have to scroll more now.

Meh don't like that, we need to make some noise about it.

Tested out the custom wallpaper feature. As I'm sure it's been discussed, it depends solely on the Share function. No cropping or editing of any kind. You just gotta open your image in the web browser and be at the mercy of the browser zoom tool. Managed to throw together a theme using the 20th anniversary of Resient Evil image. Sadly the image isn't very high-res so it's pretty blurry, also there's no way to add a second image for when you scroll up in the PS4 menus. Which is a damn shame because this is a very tall image and would've been awesome to hit up and see Nemesis pop up.

Hmmm I might have hit a hitch, I've got all my downloads going to external in the settings, now my update for uncharted is failing as the game is on my internal. I'm moving games over to test just in case the internal is full but it was showing 30gig free so I doubt it, it would be a bit of an oversight if you had to manually select which hdd you want downloading when an update hits for games on either hdd.

Don't feel too bad, I did the same thing and didn't realize it was a separate download, lol. I panicked and posted about it in the code begging thread and another gaf user was kind enough to let me back in to grab the firmware for it real quick. Didn't take long at all to download and install.

Not really a fan of the updated notifications. Prefer the old way versus having everything jumbled together and having to press option to see downloads and uploads.

They could have kept it like it was and just pared down the categories.

They keep changing things that don't really need massive overhauls. Like the whats new feed they made worse in 4.0 :(
I can understand trying to simplify it but I'm going to say I prefer the old way as well.

I attached an external drive last night and it's cool you can run games directly off that, the method of switching games could be a little better but I'm sure they'll improve it. Also the system is very strict about hotswapping the external HDD, quite rightly I suppose.

The ability to select which storage is the default download location is nice too.

I need some comparisons now game load times using an external SSD compared to one mounted as the internal storage before I decide my final configuration. Not sure I can be bothered ripping out my internal 2TB so might just plug a SSD in via USB for games I'm currently playing.

You just need to start the headset, it'll prompt for update to 2.40, without logging back in to the burner account.

I've been doing a little testing, it seems that you can't put media files on a drive that has been formatted to be ps4 extended storage as it doesn't show up as a volume on p.c. maybe someone can find another way? But even if possible i doubt the ps4 would recognise it on an extended storage drive. This is a bit irritating as now i would need 2 external drives plugged in for extended storage and media.

I registered a beta trial code but there was no instructions on how to download the patch and it wasn't automatic...There's nothing when I check for system updates.

Could anyone point me in the right direction?

are you sure about this? I think Hale tried and it wouldn't download without the burner. I will try it though.

I guess my experience with it might have been a fluke or something, I dunno. I tried multiple times to update the headset from my main account, but after the prompt would come up for the update, it would kick me back to the main menu instead of updating. Not sure why. But then when I logged back into the burner account, it updated on the first try.

yeah, i think someone else had the same problem. I turned on the headset, put the 3d blu ray in, got the prompt, clicked it and it worked. Very happy about that as i didn't fancy getting in that queue again just for that lol.

30GB free sounds like you could simply be hitting too low free space where the PS4 will refuse to download anything. The way PS4 reports free space is misleading as you can't actually get it down close to 0.

Well, I'm glad it all worked for ya just the same. :)

My findings from playing with external support today:

You can only have one external drive connected at a time. You can have more than one set up with the console but only one can be in use. You can move a drive in between different consoles no problem though.

Unfortunately there's seemingly no way to copy games, only move. I was hoping to avoid downloading large games twice to get it on both my PS4s but no such luck.

If you do have a game installed on both internal and external it prompts you when you connect the drive, you have to choose one to delete or else you can't use the drive. This could be a real issue with e.g. taking a drive to a friends console. If there's any overlap someone will have to delete something. The deletion prompt seemed bugged also and I got caught in a loop. Had to disconnect the drive and delete the internal copy manually.

Finally, moving a game off internal storage leaves behind some data which gets labeled "system storage exclusive", and can't be moved. This seems to range from a few MB to a few GB per game.

You have to consider that now for view a download/upload you have to go to notification, click the option button and select and go to download/upload. But if you want to quick jump from download to upload or the opposite you have to go back to notification with O and again you have to choose the tab you want to view.

And plus two bonus images with the new function for manually upload/download save data

Doesn't look so bad after all, pretty much the same has scrolling down to downloads then.

If you have both internal and external HDD does the PS4 let you choose where you install games?
Yes, you go to settings, storage, press the options button, click application install location then choose either system storage or extended storage and that will then be the primary storage device.

So if i understand correctly there's no easy way to tell console that I want this game on my main drive and those 5 psn+ games on my slower external drive ?

Nice, that saved me some time as i was setting up to test some of this. Just wondering, have you managed to get media files on a drive that has been formatted as extended stirage? If so did the ps4 recognise and play them? I've tried with no joy so far

Further to this, you cannot copy saves to a drive that is selected as extended storage so my guess is that it may automatically put saves on the same drive that the game is installed on so would auto download and install to whichever you have set as primary.

Nice one thanks for checking.

If you were downloading them then you would have to keep changing the primary if you wanted games to download fo different drives. However, you can move games easily between the two drives and choose as many as you like to move at once.

Ahh ok Thank You for answer.

Ehh one time I decided meh there's nothing important in those betas anyway who cares they drop megatons like this :D

Will a PS4 take a 3.1 USB Hdd ? They specify 3.0 but im assuming 3.1 is ok too . Thinking about picking a pro up in next few months and they reccomend a 3.1 for that so just wondering if it will do both

just incase people miss it, PS4 pro has a USB 3,1 port at the back so if you are shopping for a enclosure or something get a usb 3.1 enclosure. Not sure if there is any speed difference though.

No it's way way faster, it finds the game save for you in seconds, before you'd have to go through about four menus and then a large list of game saves to find the ones you want.
