PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Will a PS4 take a 3.1 USB Hdd ? They specify 3.0 but im assuming 3.1 is ok too . Thinking about picking a pro up in next few months and they reccomend a 3.1 for that so just wondering if it will do both
yes, they're pretty much the same thing except 3.1 has a higher transfer rate but will only transfer at the rate of 3.0 when plugged into it.
just incase people miss it, PS4 pro has a USB 3,1 port at the back so if you are shopping for a enclosure or something get a usb 3.1 enclosure. Not sure if there is any speed difference though.
All of the USB ports on PS4 and PS4 Pro are USB 3.0 which is exactly the same as USB 3.1 Gen 1.

My download speeds right now on the external HDD.

I know you can't tell, but I have a gigabit fiber connection lol. PS4 is wired. Well, still decent, but there's always room for improvement.

A single 60gb game with nothing else using my internet takes 24 hours to download.

You have three games downloading and the longest you have to wait is 9 hours. I wish I could have your internet speeds, I really do.

:(

:( I'm sorry. Yeah internet is still shit in most parts of the world, and expensive on top, I know I'm very lucky.

Maybe this has been asked and answered already and for this I'm sorry but had anyone tested to see if when using an external HDD and setting a game or DLC to download to that drive, has it successfully worked when the console has been put in sleep mode?

I can test that now for you. Give me a couple of minutes.

Edit: Yeah it works just fine.

Is there any consensus here on the best external hard drive?

I'd rather have one powered through USB that trying to find another power outlet.

So is it possible to manually copy games between the internal drive and the external?
And there's a setting to choose the default location for game installs?

Exactly, when choosing to copy over to external you have a multi-select list and you can select any number of games and apps before beginning the process.
In the PS4 settings you can specify where you want the data to be installed by default.

The funny thing about this is that external hard drives are cheaper than internal 2.5" drives (at least in New Zealand right now). It's cheaper to have the hard drive hanging off the PS4 than buying and installing one inside the thing.

Christ. I will never go digital.

Do you get the full capacity of external HDDs?

For example, a 500GB HDD has 465GB of formatted capacity. Internal 500GB HDDs give you 409GB of free space.

People are always commenting about download speeds with firmware updates but those always end up being placebo.

They should make a bigger deal of Boost mode on the blog.

iirc its in the japanese blog but not the western ones for some reason.

Not really a big deal as I'm assuming the beta is only available to a small fraction of their install base. Like if I didn't have a pro already, knowledge of this feature (if its the selling point that pushes me over the edge) wouldn't make me go out and get one if the firmware update is still 1-2 months away.

Plenty of time to do some marketing. For example, use this and Horizon as reasons for people to upgrade to a PS4 Pro.

Disappointed that there's no copy function.

They're will be savings on data caps or download times so.

What are the chances that GAF figures out a work around?

This is a very minor change, but I haven't seen it posted; when you look at your friends who are offline, it now shows what device they were last seen on.

Why is move option not enough? You can download the game once, and then keep it on one of your external drives.

I'm trying to decide whether a 250GB SSD is going to be enough, if I am only going to have one active game at a time. Sure, it will fit fine space-wise, but how much extra are we going to need for additional things such as video captures etc? I think it's still going to have to be a 500GB minimum right?

Been off GAF for a day and this megaton drops. I thought folders and external HDDs would never happen. Gives me a tiny shred of hope that PS1 games will carry over someday...

256GB should be fine imo

Why would you need a copy function when you can just move games between drives?
Because I have a 2TB drive in my PS4, and maybe I want to take games to a friend's PS4, but surely don't want an external drive always attached. With a copy function, I could bring the large game on a drive ready to go, and just delete the whole drive afterwards. The way it is now, I need to move it back again, waste of time.

What I'd want to do is put my my profile on my friend's playstation and copy Doom (75 gigs) across.

He can buy it then and play it on his own account. His data cap is 25 gig a month. And his Internet is painfully slow.

I guess I can just move it across and download it again myself.

Sja_626 said they had tested it and the drive worked on multiple ps4s, they didn't mention accounts but like you i'm pretty sure you would need your account for it to work.

Works on another PS4 subject to the same limitations as games on the internal drive. Digital installs will be locked for all but the owner (unless on owners primary console, in which case unlocked for all), disk games will be locked unless the disk is in.

Is there a full list of features and small additions not listed somewhere in here?

I noticed if you press option button on the user before logging in you can can log in offline or online.

I copy my Xbox games from my brothers console and vice versa to save on bandwidth now that Comcast has that 1tb cap in our state. PS4 also still differentiates between disc and PSN installs. There's really no way to save on bandwidth on PS4.

This is exactly what I was talking about. Thank you.

That's phenomenal news! I've been planning to get another PS4 for another home and would love to be able to just fly with an external drive to carry games with me. The prospect of starting lengthy downloads just to play on the few nights when it would be ideal just didn't seem worth the bandwidth, time, or hassle. This will be great!

Are we still using that burner account to download the beta? I think it was Audioboxer who started it.

I'd love to download it this way as I'm still waiting for my code to arrive :(
