PS4 system update 1.52 coming soon

But then it spins the disc up again when you actually start the game. So why does it have to do it when the console boots? Ok, maybe it needs to do it so it can show that the game is actually in the system before you start it (but then why does it have to do it again when you start the game?), but it's still pretty annoying. And it keeps spinning for so damn long, like a minute or more (first at maximum speed, then at a lower speed for a while). Shouldn't a simple disc check be faster than that?

Possibly something to do with (I assume) the game on the disk being the first icon in the row. Or maybe so it starts up faster? No idea.

But like I said, I would understand it if it only did it as the console boots (and when you change discs, obviously). But then it does it again when you start the game. Why? Surely the console already knows that the game is inserted at that point, so why check again? I guess it's some sort of additional piracy prevention measure, like maybe there could be some theoretical way for you to play the game without the disc in if it didn't do this.

Had another thought. By spinning up, the PS4 figures out the media type. So, if it's a DVD, it shows the DVD icon there, etc.

No other way to know, right?

A few days ago I noticed that the epilepsy warning screen doesn't fade smoothly anymore, it stutters twice before rolling into the menu. Is this a thing anybody else experiences?

Update went smoothly for me. As soon as the PS4 had booted (from being fully turned off) the update was downloading, and a minute later it was ready to install.

At boot, yes. But my question was why the disc starts spinning again when you start the game. Surely the PS4 knows that I haven't changed discs?

Because if it didn't, it would have to be spinning continuously from when the system booted up.

It knows you haven't pushed eject, the PS2 had a soft mod for piracy that relied on a boot disc and then changing disc without the console knowing.

I feel I haven't really got the hang of the standby function. I hold 'PS' on my controller and choose to turn the PS4 off, but it still goes into standby. Any idea why it does that?

It's the only game I have any trouble with, quite a few people have reported the same problem.

Yeah it's an issue alright.

I tried two things, the first, which worked until chapter 11, was deleting Knack's latest (and only I think) update.

The second, I disconnected from the internet and it never froze again (11th chapter onward).

You can disable it if you want to.

You can disable it with the latest update you mean?

I don't get this. Is the PS4 not downloading while on stand by for some?

You can selectively disable "auto-download/uploads in standby" in the system settings for the standby mode, same place you select if you want power to go through the USB ports in standby etc. been a feature since launch.

I believe you can disable the auto downloads during stand by in the power saving options or something.

You know what i miss from PS3 XMB? The personal message you could put on top of your name.

Seems like there is lots wrong with PS4 at the moment. I think it needed a bit longer in the oven and I'm not really happy about them pushing it out with all these problems. Right now the blu-ray player on my console doesn't work. I haven't had time to ring them about it. I'll give them three goes. If I don't get a flawlessly functioning console by the third go I will request a refund and be done with it.

Don't see that option at all

Edit

Found it

Finally the pad goes to sleep while watching Netflix. It did not do that before. But trying to manually turn the pad off still pauses the movie. Still, this is good. But I also want the HDMI Bravia Sync to work on Netflix as well. Just like it did on the PS3.

Seems like the OS doesn't crash when you're scrolling through screenshots you've taken anymore. Also it seems like an IGN app went up yesterday for anyone who hasn't checked the Video section in a while.

Get a replacement.. It's still under warranty.
Don't be a baby.

That sounds like a hardware defect. My PS4 has performed flawlessly since I got it.
