PS4 vs X1 multi-plats prediction

I've been thinking about how the multi-platform games are gonna look between the consoles, how much of an advantage PS4 will have and so on.

Here is a curveball... I predict some MPs will look and/or run better on X1 due to the drivers and other software things.

You start with the base [DirectX] driver, and then you take out all parts that don't look like Xbox One and you add in everything that really optimises that experience. Almost all of our content partners have really picked it up now, and I think it's made a really nice improvement.

I'm thinking X1's drivers and other optimization tools might be better since MS is a software company so some early multi-plats might look better. And then later on in the gen the PS4 versions will look better. Another reason could be maybe devs take their familiarity with the superior dev tools from the 360 and use them for X1.

Idk, probably a stupid thread but just a gut feeling I have. I've only got a PS4 pre-ordered, this isn't a fanboy post. But can anyone else see this happening or am I crazy?
 
I think we will have amazing looking multiplats on both that won't be near as different as Xbox 360 and PS3. But I think we will see some 1st party from Sony in 4 years that are amazing. I think MS will have some amazing 1st party also in year 3.
 
The lead system usually has the best version of the game. It wouldn't really surprise me that much if some devs decide to make the xbone the lead system for their multiplatform games.

The lead system this upcoming gen is PC. EA & Ubisoft are developing all their games on PC than downporting them to the consoles.

PS4 exclusives will probably look much better than Xbone exclusives, especially first party, similar to current gen. Multiplats will probably look similar.
 
I think it will probably be the same situation as this gen, only now it's playstation that has the slightly better looking multiplats.
 
If enough people buy a PS4 over an XBONE, I can see Call of Duty maps not releasing a month in advance on Xbox Live anymore.

I'm thinking this is probably a likely scenario.

Then again none of us knows because this is pure speculation and we should probably just wait a few months until these systems release.

It's not 50% anymore. It's 40%. MS have announced a speed bump. And driver maturity can make a big difference.

Doubt it. Microsoft has a deal with Activision involving lots of moneys, and I imagine they will want to hold onto that deal in the next gen considering Call of Duty is a juggernaut and MS will want to retain the COD crowd.
 
Frankly, I hope you're right because I'm only getting a PS4 in 2013. It's just a strange gut feeling I have. If not that then they'll be near identical, even less than 360 vs PS3 multi-plats. The 3gb of the GDDR5 being reserved has kind of stymied my erection a bit in terms of having easily noticeable improvements.

This would have probably rang true but Sony's development environment was more mature than Xbox's as of late May.
 
It not really a debate. It just comes down to how much more the ps4 version will look better.

Will it be a little bit better or a lot. It most cases it will be a little bit better.
 
The driver situation with Nvidia vs AMD pc gfx cards was where this sentiment stems from. That situation is much better now as AMD has improved their drivers a lot but in the past some games had really big differences when comparing two of the same power-level cards or even a higher AMD card vs a lower Nvidia. I have a feeling MS' drivers and dev tools will be better- they're Microsoft after all. Then eventually maybe a year or two down the line every multi-plat will be better on PS4 once devs get fully acclimated.
 
Multi-plats will be so much alike that your average human won't be able to tell the difference probably. Sony may have some good looking exclusives later in the generation, but when both consoles can push 1080p/60fps and the problem of diminishing returns I don't see them being system sellers based on graphics alone.

Yeah. It's a rather strange assumption that Sony's driver will be complete shit, though.

We also can't really factor in memory differences (DDR3+eSRAM vs. GDDR5), because we have no clue how much difference that'll make in reality.

This is true. I've talked to dudebros and asked why they play CoD over Battlefield and their answer is some variation of "it feels smoother" or "controls are smoother". This is referencing the tight, precise controls and fluidity of movement 60 fps CoD provides.

There is absolutely no reason (software or hardware wise) for a multi-plat game to look worse on the PS4.
 
PS4 multiplatform games will no doubt run and look better considering the architectural similarites between the both systems. Maybe higher AA and other post process effects at a bare minimum.
 
Driver issues on Windows are a very different thing to what you have on consoles. Console OSes are tailored to their specific hardware whereas DirectX exists because PCs have no specific hardware. DirectX is basically a workaround to a problem that doesn't exist on consoles - that different vendors sell different hardware from different manufacturers in their PCs.

Xbox One may well grant its OS faster access to its hardware through better written software. But we're likely talking fractional differences.

PS4 will probably use libGCM, allowing a low level access to the GPU as well.
 
Hopefully PS4 will see some sort of performance advantage, like faster load times or less pop-in, but I expect them to look mostly the same. What may make more of a difference than hardware strength is install base, which can influence which is the lead sku. PS4 preorders were crushing XB1 preorders after E3, but MS seems to be trying to course-correct and I haven't heard any new lately in regards to how how those numbers are shaping up. All this assuming that the PS4 and XB1 are different enough for lead sku to matter this gen.
 
I'm guessing we'll have similar performance with more bells and whistles on PS4. If image quality is the same and framerates are acceptable, though, I can't see the PS4 versions of games being game changing in comparison to the Xbox One version.

This is such a narrow-minded comment which re-surfaces every so often. Microsoft are probably the most successful software company, but that doesn't mean they have the best software engineers.

I'm not sure about PS4 exclusives looking much better than multiplatform games like it was the case with the PS3, the PS4 is a much easier system to work with so I think that the gap between the first and third party games may be much smaller this time around.

I guess we'll have to wait till the launch and see how similar games like Killzone and BF4 will compare.

None of the consoles to date talk to graphics hw through drivers. And we have direct quotes for the new ones from platform makers indicating likelihood that this generation won't be doing that either.
 
Multiplats built for PC, then tuned to each console. Finally PC gamers are not redheaded stepchild of multiplat development.

You're using a shill quote as evidence? I think there will be little difference initially, but I suspect the gap in visual fidelity to widen over time. Even for multi plats.

I'm just not sure how it'll be the same as this generation considering the PS4 is actually a better powered console.
