A DDos attack simply rams the server with a huge amount of false requests. Enough people do it, the server can't handle the amount of false traffic and crashes.
Nothing is being hacked and any idiot can do it.
But one was PSN.

Also this only really became news when PSN went down. Searching Google it looks like the majority of sites are only pointing out that PSN is being attacked and make mention of the others as merely a side note.
