PSN, Battlenet, Riot, and others DDOSed; PSN returning lightly toasted with butter

WTF?

2014-08-2416_53_48-lil3js5.png

Methinks they're going after the wrong group of people with this....

Why didn't they hack Nintendo instead?! Or Steam, or Ouya...
These hackers need to be dealt with, asap. But Sony is also at fault for being hacked so easily. This would've never happened with XBL.

Screw those hackers.

Never HUH. Lets see you say it when Xbox live gets ddos

Any server is capable of being targeted.

I've been running a countertrace on Web 2.0 but they irrigated the hyperlinks and dove into the deep web. I may have to enhance the polarity of the bit matrix before they can manage to wipe their botprints clean from the information superhighway.

Are the effects of a DDoS similar to Gaf being down during E3 due to traffic? If so, shouldn't Sony increase server capacity to try and deal with the problem?

Translation:

Are the effects of a DDoS similar to Gaf being down during E3 due to traffic? If so, shouldn't Sony increase the size of its bucket to try and deal with the problem?

This is a problem of a bucket(Servers) with a small hole at the bottom(Bandwidth), and a water hose(people/DDoS connection requests) poring water in.
Once the bucket is full, the water goes out the top of the bucket(no connection), not out the bottom where it could continue on to its destination(connecting to requested services).

i dont even know what DDOS stands for. really its not my responsibilty to know.

just like its not my responsibility to know why my brand new car has a check engine light on.

the general consensus is that something is wrong with the engine when a check ENGINE light comes on when actually the gas cap was not tightened and your leaking from the evap system

Thank you. Other posters are really up in arms about this and are saying we should do research on the topic "before making stupid posts." Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

Huh? It's incredibly basic internet terminology. I'm just surprised so many people on this forum don't know the difference.

I know what a ddos is, I just always associated with the act of hacking which is apparently wrong and I should Ve ashamed for not having basic interwebz knowledge. But I digress.

Can't believe so many people are confusing DDOS, which could easily happen to any company and is no risk to security, to being hacked.

Still unfortunate though.

Let's be clear that most networks can be DDOS'd and everyone can be a target.

That being said, planning, design and technology and easily mitigate a DDOS. Microsoft has loads of experience with them and now is rarely take down by them. They are frequently attacked and cloud services like Azure are designed to nullify them. I assume Sony and Nintendo would not be as hardened for them as they're not as big in internet services.

Seriously why not perform this not-a-hack on world bank, debeers, Exxon, [insert major telecom or cable corporation here]?

Because even they probably realize that attacking those companies would be a fantastic way to either get a bullet in the back of the head or to simply disappear.

People have told you otherwise and you've resorted to mocking them for having more information than you on this topic. And now you're complaining about them pointing it out to you.

Because PSN has already been hacked once and credit cards numbers and other user information was lost. So saying this is a hack will make people think a similar thing will happen. DDOSing is not hacking.

I don't understand how typing ddos into wikipedia is onerous. Willful ignorance is seriously one of the worst things ever and your analogy is completely irrelevant.

While I agree with your main point, just that credit cards were never really lost though. At least, there wasn't any reported since those were actually encrypted. However, names, address and personal information were not encrypted and that's what the hackers got hold of.

Been a long time, so I could be wrong, but this is what I remember.

Please read several pages back to see why I'm complaining. I'm complaining about the complaining.

Why are you typing so weird in your replies (interwebz and whatnot)? I'm not remotely any kind of hacker or hacking enthusiast. It's just important to make the distinction, as hacking is a threat to security whereas DDoS isn't.

In a world of information, ignorance is a choice

Thanks, I wasn't sure about the credit cards and I haven't put mine back on PSN since that incident. Appreciate the correction.

Can't play Diablo 3 offline :(

I have a UK account but buy my stuff from the US store. I cannot start Diablo from either my UK or US account. I have tried unchecking "Connect to internet" in the PS4 network settings and turning my router off etc. The PS4 I use has been activated as primary in both accounts.

Whatever I try and do, the lock symbol appears on Diablo 3 and says "Cannot connect to the server to verify the licence" when I try to launch it.

:(

Though you and all others that are trying to educate about the differences are welcome to do so ultimately it's Sony's job to do so directly to theis customers. It's in their best interest to appease any fears their users can have that this is in any way a similar attack to the 2011 hack.

it was a figure of speech to support my main point that: hack or ddos attack, it does not change what end consumer sees on their screen when they play their ps4. If we're on the subject of willful ignorance, i suggest you then go learn all of the possible DTCs your car can set when the CEL comes on

Weird, I'm in the UK and bought Diablo 3 from the US store and it's fine offline for me. Primary PS4 for both accounts, unchecked "connect to the internet" box too. No padlock.

Posting Etiquette

Be polite, please
In general when posting in threads, don't be a dick. Be respectful of other fellow members, and learn to argue against the points in a discussion without making it personal or insulting the other party. Present your points well and others will respect your opinion more. Using proper grammar and avoiding typos will also make it easier for others to understand your message.

Don't do annoying things
There are various things which can be considered annoying to many people in general, try to avoid doing that. If someone makes a post with tons of images in it, don't quote the entire post just to reply with "cool" or "looks good". Don't spam a thread with posts which contribute nothing other than implying you were first to post in it. Don't be a racist or a bigot.

-Snip-

Don't derail threads
Forums generally operate differently from chatrooms. While NeoGAF is faster moving than most, and some threads on Off Topic Discussions cover a more general set of topics, it is still best to keep within the perimeters of a discussion. Posting in a manner that would shift the subject of discussion to something completely unrelated to the thread's core discussion point is not welcome.

Please be kind, and don't annoy.

They're also not hackers.

They just copypasted stuff someone else wrote. It's that easy. That's part of the reason DDoS attacks are so common nowadays, any bored 12 year old can pull it off, specially since the whole amplification thing got moving you don't even need a botnet anymore.
