PSP 2.50 firmware is out...

If you have one of these $300 locationfree TV boxes and an 300kb upload at home (and 300kb down where ever your psp is)

I’m sorry I still don’t get it. Are you guys telling me that I can watch SportsCenter or HBO live from anywhere in the world by using my Satellite feed from my house by using my PSP?
All you need is a broadband internet connection in your vicinity and a base unit at home.

The missus and I were JUST talking about Location Free TV last month... we were looking at either that or the Slingbox... hmmm....

Looks like the Sony base unit is running $350.... this is incredibly tempting as a Xmas gift to ourselves.... if the 2.5 firmware gets here anytime soon...

Oh shit I'm an idiot it IS here in US... between this and WPA FINALLY being added good reason for me to update my PSP....

OMG!! Looks like I may be getting a DVR and a Sony locationfree base unit this Xmas. I can record all my shows of Martin a watch them on the go at hotels, resturants, and work!!

YES!

... i now have a quandry - my PSP 1.5 UMD drive died (and it's not like i've been using the UMD drive at all!! (The sony hater curse strikes again huh?)) although then again i may not need to ever use it. But now i can down grade my 2.0 White to 1.5... or upgrade and try out the 2.5 with base station.

Then again, i could just buy another white / black one i guess.

Perhaps you have heard of a thing called a "Warranty." A Warranty protects people called "Consumers" from wasting money on an additional purchases once "Products," hereafter referred to as "Shit," breaks. Simply locate the box your Shit came in. On the back is the name of the location where the Shit was purchased. This Box serves as your Warranty form. Simply go to Akihabara or Shinagawa to the Sony Service Center, and present both the broken Shit and the Box with the date. Your Shit will still be under its 1-year Warranty as your Shit only came out last December. Sony will be pleased to fix your Shit in under a week for FREE, because it is their job to make Shit that does not break and it's their fucking fault for your Shit breaking.

Downgrade your 2.0 to 1.5 for homebrew. Sony will probably put the new firmware on the freshly fixed Shit, but then again, if you want a working UMD drive, then the products you will use in them will most likely REQUIRE the new firmware.

Seriously, the solution for "my Shit is broken" is "fucking take it back," not "buy a new one." Something tells me this is why Sony makes a lot of money.

The big question is this:

Sony's Location Free TV base stations are more or less designed to work independent of a home network. However, the LF-PK1 box does allow for TVoverIP. The QUESTION is this: Will the PSP support the latter? The base station in question comes with dedicated software to connect to your box from any broadband connection, does the PSP LFTV software allow for that same thing, or is it specifically designed to work over a local connection?

Since I do know the terminology I'll say this... if you are asking if the LF-PK1 box in combination with the PSP allows you to view your home tv programming while you are out in the world simply with your PSP and a wireless connection, the answer is yes.

You can watch TV or videos on your PSP™ system by using the LocationFree™ Player. To watch TV or videos at home, you must have a LocationFree™ Base Station (a Sony product sold separately). To watch away from home, you must have a LocationFree™ Base Station (a Sony product sold separately) and access to the Internet using a wireless LAN.

If that was not your question... excuse my answer. ;)

Is that language from the 2.5 update? I kinda just skimmed it last night. :P

(Yes, that was my question. And I'm wondering if $100 more than a Slingbox is worth being able to watch TV on my PSP or laptop.)

(We all know the answer is "yes," don't we?)

Yes that's right from the US 2.50 page located Here although it's specifically from the hyperlink under the words locationfree, which takes you Here

i suggested this when the PSP launched, but ...

why not set up "Sony TV" for access in major population areas?

Have adverts, tv shorts, and area specific adverts.

"Show your PSP at Raj Mahal for a 5% discount on food TODAY!"
etc etc...

"You are in shibuya! It's Thursday - here are some videos of the hot new PSP titles that came out today!

*show games*

your nearest stores are here here and here!
Bic Camera have a 10% off if you buy three titles deal!"

Advertising revenue would be obscene, people would use it on the train on the way into these areas and whilst wandering about/waiting for people.

That, sir, is an excellent idea. This will go well with that cell phone directory back up idea...writes it down. Thanks!

Thanks for the links. I wonder what the quality will look like.

I have another question about location free base station. If I plug the live TV feed into the base station, does that mean someone else can't watch TV the usual way at the same time?

That'd be the downside, yeah. The people at home have to watch what the road warrior is watching.

what about pre-recorded stuff? can I control my DVR when I am out and about? or is it just live TV? and how do you change the channel??

I just downloaded the basestation's manual... it comes with one of those IR transmitters you stack your devices(which most people already have their cable box on top of their DVd on top of whatever) and place the IR transmitter on the top-most device so it can look down. Your then download to your PSP the necessary remote control codes so if they have the codes for you DVR you should have the full DVR functionality... As for me I'd be REAL surprised if they didn't have DirecTV/TIVO codes so I think I'm good to go.. I just need to track down a review of the BaseStation...

I'd be surprised if that's completly true.

Uh which part? Most devices that describe themselves as controlling other devices do it by have a IR repeater that they use to send commands to your device.

And who said the PSP wasn't going to offer anything revolutionary? A handheld gaming system I can play games, music, movies on AND watch TV location free?

::hugs his PSP::

I'll probably update as well. Tiresome typing out my long ass e-mail on the PSP "keyboard" all the time. The input history thingy should come in handy then. :D

... this is that second hand unit that i scored in the mom-and-pop store for 13,000.

There be no box...

:(

Is the 2.5 firmware update available via Network Update on the PSP (US PSP), or is that just the 2.01 firmware?
