PSP + Dust Particles = DANGER

As excited as I am over the PSP, all handheld consoles should henceforth be designed thusly. I'm sure they can find a way to combine a horizontally-oriented one with a nice fat LCD that also closes. My SP goes with my everywhere, is treated less than gingerly, and has ZERO scratches on the LCD in the year and a half or so I've owned it. My old GBA - scratched to crap, all my previous GBs - scratched. Gear Gear - hey, we sensing a pattern here? Make the system designed to be its own protection. Yes, it's lovely that it looks sexy, but come on Sony, take the extra step of also making your damn products DURABLE.
 
My PSP also has hairline scratches caused by constantly cleaning the screen with a glasses cloth (as recommended by Defensor) as well as the value pack case. And yet, it still has those hairline scratches. That's unfortunate, IMO. I really would have liked a clampshell design ala DS and GBASP, but oh well.

When you see those scratches...think in me and my screen that looks a bit blurry on a certain zone thanks to the alcohol, think in Dcharlie and his 3 dead pixels, or in the guy that broke it thanks to a crazy bus drive...

Yeah, I'm very lucky. :)

But one of these days... the PSP shall be dropped out of my control. It's pretty much inevitable, and I pray to lord it's in the value pack case WHEN it happens. :D

Which is to you say will need an anti-static clean room, because if you do it in any sort of normal environment the air will be filled with dust particles....

Shogmaster used to go off about this when the GBA SP had dust-problems thanks to the wonky side-lighting.
 
Why is the PSP's screen black when it's turned off, but the GBA SP's gray? That makes any scratches on the GBA's far less visible.

...because the display used on PSP is a higher quality screen. Take a look at newer laptops and their glossy screens, for example...

By the way Ourumov, did you solve the squeaky d-pad thing now that you were on it? Or did it just went away with time? Mine's still squeeeeeeeaking hard.

I can attest to this as well. I have quite literally dropped, tossed and knocked my SP around and the screen has never suffered any consequnce because it's always closed when not being played. System still works like the day I bought it even if the casing tells an abusive history.

The previous models were just as durable, but the screens always got scratched up somehow.

As cool as PSP looks, I was concerned that about durabity and battery life at the outset. Seems Sony has done nothing to address those concerns and has instead opted to go the route they route they went with PS2 - making shitty hardware that won't last so you can buy more shitty hardware that won't last.

I thought Alpha radiation was the one that was ok to handle in most cases since the skin can block the radiation. I'm pretty sure that's the kind we experimented with in good ol' chemistry class back in the day. It's the Beta/Gamma rays that are hazardous to your health. As long as you don't eat an Alpha radiation source or have any prolonged exposure to it you should be ok.

Anyhoo, back on topic. I just don't wipe off my screen really. I just kind of blow the dust off. I have a screen protector coming in the mail and I wasted money getting the Dynasty Warriors box set so i could get the special PSP case that comes with it. Hopefully that case will work well.

You're always going to read and remember the more negative stories about a new system than positive ones.

My PSP is scratch free. I clean it it a cloth and solution specially deisgned for PDA/computer screens. No scratches come from it. I keep it in an old GBA case and it rattles around in my backpack. No scratches come from it. I've walked around with the system in my pocket. Yep, NO SCRATCHES.

My co-worker just got a PSP. It's scratch free. He cleans it with toilet paper sometimes. No scratches. It got dropped today. No scratches.

It's not like some systems are made better than others, but what is used to clean the screen (I guess, it's hard to believe anything used to clean the screen could scrath it up, but these guys aren't lying!) and how it is protected or treated.

What happened to Ouromov sucks, though, and is one of the risks in importing handheld gaming systems. If it was a domestic launch, he could have easily returned or exchanged it.

Bottom line: Electronics aren't perfect. Things happen during manufacturing and bad systems are produced. Something could happen during shipping, or the system might just get messed up for no reason at all.

As a matter of fact, the only handheld I've ever owned that had screen problems? The original Gameboy. (Remember those orange vertical lines?)

And incidentally, the only handheld I've purchased with dead pixels? Gameboy Advance SP. NES Edition, so when you buy the system means squat. :P

Or Sony just makes clumsy hardware. Maybe the ones that are breaking/scratching are acutally the normal ones and yours is the one that is defective because it works. After all, this is Sony we're talking here.
 
lyte, i maintain that you just haven't held your psp under a bright enough light. mine looks pristine under most circumstances, but it's actually scored with dozens of tiny scratches. there are only a couple lights in my house that reveal this. if you've put the system in your pocket, it's scratched. count on it.

anyway, oumurov, sorry to hear that your psp got messed up. :/ i just lifted up the corner of the faceplate, and blew the offending dust particles out with a can of compressed air. now, it's possible that this just introduced more dust, but none of it is as visible as the original dust. or indeed visible at all when the screen is on. so i'm happy.

i hope a third party does a replacement faceplate. shouldn't be hard to improve on sony's attractive but high-maintenance design.
