PSP: for 262€ at the 18th of March in Europe?

That is strange indeed. However, Capcom has already stated it'll be released on 18 march. Perhaps they forgot? :)

Resident Evil 4 is for March!

PSP price is placeholder. It will be much cheaper than that! :)

Good news all around.

Really?? Great if true, but like I said, last time I chatted with somebody in the know they were struggling to push it under 300 eur. Maybe your knowledge is newer than mine?

PS2 launched at 20.799 Belgian Franc that equals to 502 EURO 21% tax included
(price was the same in netherlands and france more or less)

thanx to the low value of current us$ that means something of 650$ in todays value

I expect the sony psp to launch at 249EURO minimum.

Real prices wont be shown till the companies make their announcements. Thats why. Its not a problem for Sony or Nintendo. There have been meetings with retail already.

PSP will smoke DS in the UK if preorders are any indication so far.

You can thank Nintendo for stopping that. Pulling that kind of stuff on Europe since the GBA/GC launch is suicide. See European Xbox launch.

One note: PS2 launched before the euro era, with euro Sony is having unified prices among european countries.
Expect for UK where they're still using pounds and they pay slightly more than the euro counterpart.

Right and wrong. In November 2000 the currencies were tied to Euro, i.e. exchange rates fixed. However, the common currency was not yet in use as physical money in 2000. Hence, PS2 launched in Finland for 2995 FIM, which with the fixed rate equals almost exactly 500 eur (1 eur = 5,9 fim). So, the price transparency wasn't as high as it's now. Now with all Euro countries using the currency in practice, comparison is really easy.

It is not only the high VAT responsible for the higher prices in europe but a warranty of 2 years on about everything (I know it is not a real 2 year warranty but if there is no obvious damage indicating raw force you usually have no problems to get your stuff replaced or repaired in that time).

So if products arent very durable this is a real pricing factor.

The usual Nintendo handheld sure survives that 2 years without problems, dont know about a PSP.

btw. my guess is 199 Euro and 249 Euro for the value pack, that is still more than in japan even when reduced by the highest VAT. I think the desastrous xbox launch price of 469 Euro (which dropped to 249 Euro incl. 3 games in like 9 month) was a warning, console prices are now usually in Euro what they are in $ in the US.

I think this smug "already posted" shit has to stop.
If a thread generates a shitload of interest and debate, like this one, then it's fair to assume that it was missed by those participating. Pointing out that you already saw this posted some time ago is self-congratulatory spew.
Now, as they say in the north of England, turn it in.
:)

Can't comment on how they'll handle the rest of Europe, but here's how I expect UK retail will play consumers in March:

I could easily see PSP costing as much as £175. People would pay it. PS2 has only recently dropped to around £100, and people are paying well over the odds to get them for Christmas. PSP has portability, a factor which people expect implies a bit of a premium. If they really use their balls the value pack will be about £130, but I really don't think so. NDS will be £100 or less... £130 at absolute tops. Releasing close to one another, could ensure good prices for both.

GBASP is currently £70, which should drop too...

I haven't seen any estimates from notable parties yet, nothing but guesswork online n' stuff.

I think the US price equates to £75 or €112 before tax and arbitrary price hikes.

£100 = €145 = $195?

This reminds me when MS tried to sell the Xbox in Europe for more than $600 :lol

Was this really correct? I got mine at launch for around 400 dollars, which is normal launch price for new consoles here. And this was the price all over Norway at launch. The PS2 however, cost more than 700 dollars when it launched, but it was never bashed for it for some reason. I never understood why everyone said Xbox was overpriced.

Was it that much more expensive elsewhere?

PS2 and XBox both cost £299.99 in the UK at their launches. Difference was that PS2 was the first next gen machine and out much earlier.

Yes, that`s what I thought. Then where did the overwhelming bashing MS got from it`s "overpricing" at launch come from? It doesn`t make any sense. 300 pounds/dollars is the usual launch price for new consoles.

Except £300 = $584

The reason it was bashed is because it wasn't competitive enough. If it had been competitive enough - then why did MS lower the price very fast in the UK and bundle 2 SEGA games?

Compare and contrast: Nintendo Gamecube launched a year following PS2 (two months after Xbox) for £129. Half the price.

Digitiser talked about the overpricing of PS2 in the UK for months, before and after launch. PS2 sales dropped through the floor after holiday 2000 to the point retailers were openly criticising Sony by summer 2001. Microsoft were just dumb and didn't understand the market, similar to the N64 launch nightmare. No console manufacturer is going to be dumb enough to release their console at a £=$ ratio next time around.

I'd bet on a £99 DS and a £129 PSP right now, any more and we're getting screwed yet again.

It came from the fact that when PS2 launched it had no competition. I loved Dreamcast, but PS2 hype alone crushed it. On the other hand, when Xbox launched, over one year had gone by and PS2 was a fully established competitor. Xbox launch price in EU was a complete joke. IMO. I guess MS thought "since PS2 had a good launch with 500 euro price point we can also charge the same price...".

I'd go further adding "those stupid europeans may be willing to pay our expesive american and japanese launches"

Well, looks like we didn't think so :lol :lol
