(PSP) Hardware and Software sales numbers!

Great launch!

This morning, Reuters posted word that the PlayStation Portable has had a successful launch in Japan. Citing Sony, it seems retailers throughout Japan had almost completely sold out of PSP units on its first day of sales, with Sony shipping around 200,000 units to retailers ahead of the Sunday launch. Although the article goes on to state that Sony, who is sticking with its 500,000 unit shipping target in Japan by the end of 2004, didn't put forth exact figures that magazine publisher Enterbrain put out estimated figures. According to the figures, Sony sold 166,017 units on Sunday, working out ot 86% of the 193,056 units shipped. The top selling unit for the PSP were Hot Shots Golf, (67,685 units sold), Ridge Racers (57,131 units sold) and Armored Core Formula Front (11,867 units sold).

Did...uhh...nobody buy Lumines or something?

Looks like Software and Hardware are lining up fairly similarly for Nintendo and Sony in Japan; Two top tier titles, and a whole bunch of bottom feeders. Too bad, in many cases.

When are they going to ship the remaining 300,000 units? Is it going to be gradually, or in another big shipment?

With the remaing 37k units being held in the back for 500% markup the next day :lol

I can't believe RR isn't the #1 game by a long shot. I knew HSG would sell well, but...

Look, I know I don't agree with everything you say, but you're not THAT bad. ;)

but those software sales and hardware sales numbers doesn't add up.
Add in the other games selling a few thousand a piece and they become pretty even. And just as there are DS buyers primarily using it for GBA games, there are probably some PSP buyers primarily using it for its music/movie capability.

100k a week is what we've been told.

Nice nice sales, though it seems PSP may suffer from the handheld curse even for a new system. But it's a bit early to tell heh. These are on par with DS first day software sales though. Pretty cool.

Sony's remaining stock for the year...

The company met its target of shipping 200,000 units of the PSP to retailers for the Dec. 12 debut, said Nanako Kato, a Tokyo- based spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment.

Sony sold 171,963 PSP consoles yesterday, Tokyo-based market researcher Media Create said in a faxed statement.
Zelda

Hmm. WHO IS RIGHT?!?!?

software ratios are odd for both PSP and DS. Maybe people just wanted to make sure they got a unit in the frenzy. Sony will certainly hope that software number goes up pretty damn sharpish!

That's great first day sales!

How does this compare to DS's first day in Japan? It will be interesting to see how these two portables do against each other.

DS = 235K first day

All 4 Minna no Golf games have been million sellers, so I'm not surprised that it's doing better than Ridge Racers. Still, 3 Sony hardware launches, 3 RR games from Namco, and all sold well.

There have been 5 minna no golf games. One did not sell all that well =)

Minna No Golf outsold Mario DS despite having less systems to sell too =/. Ridge Racer came pretty damn close.

Software sales are about the same though, with the DS edging out a bit in some cases.
1 DS Super Mario 64 DS Nintendo 63,700 27%
2 DS Sawaru Made in Wario Nintendo 63,500 30%
3 DS Kimi no tame nara Shineru Sega 20,800 30%
5 DS Daigassou! Band Brothers Nintendo 15,400 45%
6 DS Pokemon Dash Pokemon 15,200 16%
9 DS Chokkan Hitofude Nintendo 9,900 22%
11 DS Kenshuui: Tendo Dokuta Spike 8,400 20%
14 DS Mr.Driller Drill Spirits Namco 5,300 18%
16 DS Mah Jong Taikai Koei 2,900 26%
- DS Zoo Keeper Success 2,000 19%
- DS The Urbs: In the City EA 1,100 10%

With limited quantities in all these launches, I'm sure there are at least 10k or more profiteers out there that are reselling the units for exhorbitant prices and hence, not buying any games.

Attach rates are really low for both DS and PSP. But the thing is that the DS can play GBA games so that's understandable.

Perhaps many people are mostly just getting the PSP because it's the new thing and only using it to play mp3s and movie files (on the best screen evar) off the mem stick?

The DS sold more because it is easier to skip elementary school and buy a DS than to get out of work and buy a PSP! :lol <sarcasm>

Well the PSP only launched with 5 games I think. More come out on the 16th (MGA, DW, Gagharv), so it could be possible people are just waiting it out until then, or actually using the system as a media device.

1) I'm incredibly surprised that retailers didn't force software bundles down people's throats for this launch. If you're going to have a 100% sellout no matter what, why not create 2 or 3 game bundles?

2) Sony will have a difficult time with tie ratio. I think from certain perspectives it will be better in that gamers will buy many more games that they did for the GBA, however, the non-gamers that get this for movies and music won't be buying a ton of games. At the ~$200 price point, the PSP is an unfreakenbelievably good deal for it's multimedia capabilities.

Dsal how do you know that attachment rate for the PSP when you don't know how much the other games sold?
Well, if there were the 5 games, and #4 and #5 sold just as well as #3, that would be 160,411 games and 166,017 systems.

I had forgotten it was only 5 games. That makes a bit more sense then.

It would have been good if Sony could have prepared a new shipment by then. A sort of second launch.

Top 10 all-format for Sunday according to Oricon via yahoo

1 PSP Minna no Golf Portable (SCE)
2 PSP Ridge Racers (Namco)
3 PS2 Dragon Quest VIII (Square Enix)
4 PS2 KIDOU SENSHI GUNDAM VS. Z-GUNDAM (Bandai)
5 PS2 Giken Koushiki Pachi-Slot Simulator Yoshimune (Taito)
6 NDS Sawaru Made in Wario (Nintendo)
7 NDS Super Mario 64 DS (Nintendo)
8 GBA RockMan EXE 5 Team of Blues (Capcom)
9 GCN Mario Party 6 (Nintendo)
10 PSP Armored Core: Formula Front (From Software)

Hmm, not much love for Lumines - perhaps puzzlers just don't have as much clout as they did in the Game Boy/Tetris days.

And off-topic: Wario > Mario

I'm not too surprised that Luminies, Mah Jong Fight Club, and Vampire Chronicles didn't break the top 10.

I think in a week when more systems launch Minna no Golf and Ridge Racers will be the only games really keeping up there.

But I think Dokodemo Issho will do decently. A little more than Armored Core. But the big title i think will be shin sangoku musou.

wasn't namco's expectations for ridge racer eventually supposed to be like 300k copies?

It might do that or a little less like 200-250k.

Excellent, that should mean another 13k+ for the two DS games on sunday, which should surely equate to around anouther 70k for the week.

I actually think Sawaru, Super Mario 64 DS and the DS itself will sell more than the PSP counterparts (Golf, Ridge and the PSP) this week (I know we're comparing 7 days to 1 day but still), and will continue to pull ahead over the christmas rush.

Good news indeed :-)

Uh, what part of "DS HAS MORE UNITS OUT THERE" is so hard for some people to grasp?

That's pretty pathetic for PSP, didn't even sell out with only 200,000 units available.
Even if you limited the DS' launch to 200,000 units, it'll max out with 200,000 units on day 1

Kutaragi must be having nightmares :lol

Yeah, and why is that??!!

And why didn't it sell out even with so few games available?!!

:lol
