PSP launch hype: how big will it be?

the day psp comes out in the us, how big do you think the excitement will be? i have a feeling it's gonna be huge. but i wonder if it would be as big as when the ps2 launched here on oct. 26, 2000. now *that* day was crazy... people lining up and camping out in front of stores hours before they opened, near fights breaking out, etc. i don't think there was an event quite like it before. so, do you think the psp launch will be similar to this?

All things remaining constant...not that big. I took my sweet time preordering, and I'm #17 on the list. 22 on another.

I think the hype will ramp up post-launch.

They need more games and/or more fleshed out multimedia capabilities.

No websites have begun the preorders yet (US), correct?

Edit: Actually... I'm an idiot... of course there won't be preorders for it on the net :)

Less than PS2... less than GC/Xbox/DC actually given the timeframe. Probably more hyped than GBA/DS though, it'll be the first handheld that really gets great coverage from the gaming media. It'll coast along that way probably until Xenon starts taking over the media, then it'll be relegated to 2nd class status again.

GBA got great press for its first year.

Nintendo spent a lot of $$ to make sure of that... Coupled w/ the fact that it was the successor to the best selling portable in history.

And Sony will, especially given their history, not spend a lot of $$ to make sure they're well covered in the press, am i rite?

O wait the PSP already made the cover of Newsweek and Stuff UK and is already being heralded by the press and it hasn't even been given a solid release date/price in US/UK.

But put that aside, do you honestly think Sony is going to have anything other than a colossal push for this thing? I don't know how the hype will compare to the likes of PS2/GC/Xbox, but it's going to be positively huge.

I'm curious to see how much emphasis at launch will be put on the non-game related aspects of the PSP - music will probably be the big one, then movies and perhaps images as well.

Sony wants this to be the next Walkman, but they've still got to push software for the thing too.

It wont be as big as the PS2. With PS2 people were eargerly awaiting the followup to the PS1.

I dont think as many people are waiting for a portable PS2.

(was that a troll?)

At launch, but ever since then it's been seen as a 2nd class platform. Amazing when you consider how well the machine does (outselling GC+Xbox combined times 2). JP media is pretty good to GBA but that's literally it.

To put some perspective on the hype... I have never owned a Playstation in any form or fashion. I have about as much respect for Sony as a company as I do Compaq. They use proprietary equipment in everything and then charge twice as much to replace it.

... but I still can't wait to get a PSP. I'm a gadget guy and that beautiful screen and all of those neat features are just calling my name.

with 6 games from EA, TW:HO " if it has been confirmed to be a launch title" , THUG2 and the BIG sony hype as usual, you can expect 100K units to be sold at the first day ..and this is a very huge number IMHO.

But the PSP sold 167,000 units+ in Japan on its first day :|

Also, you forgot Ridge Racers/MERCURY

True enough. I think the same thing will happen with the PSP though.

I doubt that, unless somehow Sony found a way to enhance production by like 4x over and unless you're talking about worldwide sales between Europe/USA.

supposedly, lumines will be included in the value pack

:D

That would make a good value pack. :)

The killer package would be the PSP, memory stick, earphones, and one game pack-in for $200, but that's not going to happen...

...right?

Ignoring the PSPs already incredible value, if this happened and came in at 200 bucks it'd be the single greatest value in videogame history, imho... especially for a launch product :P

IAWTP. To pack all that in for $200 would lead a lot of people who would want to wait for a pricedrop to just go ahead and purchase.

Sales will be limited by supply.

But we already know there is at least 1 million PSPs already sold to techies and fans who just can't wait.

The real test is if it can get a critical mass soon enough to counter any challenge the DS might have to it. By march DS probably would have a pretty solid 1.5 m unit lead and to a third party publisher, the DS is going to be more appealing in terms of potential sales.

100 million units, causing Nintendo to sink into the earth. The earth will then spin backward and every unit of everything Nintendo has ever sold will be as nothing.

from what i gather, sony really only need to put it out a few weeks before launch with that screen running.

Sony just need to put it out there, ie kiosks etc and BANG
Reading the impressions from the Japanese resident members and those that import leads me to believe people will be awed by the screen and the size and the hype will build itself.

ie johntv appears quite taken with the little PS. DC can find little wrong with it, Lyte, Mash, Buddychrist, DSAL all raving.

Yup, this thing is going to have the iPod syndrome:

"Hey check out my new little gadget"

"Holy fuck, look at the screen, the graphics. WHAT? You can play movies and music on this thing? *subsequently tramples the homeless and young children on his quest to get a PSP*"

:P

I don't even want to imagine what Christmas 2005 is going to be like for soccer moms trying to get PSPs and DSs for their kids... AND Xenon. People will die. Shots will be fired. Tears will be shed.

I'd get one right away for that ridiculously cheap price.

Soccer moms? PSP? :lol

depends on whether on not XENON launch is huge. They're really going to be fighting for the same sort of market (sort of). It will BE HUGE however... maybe...

The PSP is schedule to launch in March right now and the Xbox 2 likely won't come out till late 3rd or 4th quarter.
