I was trying to copy files from my stock 32MB PSP Mem Stick Pro Duo to my PC yesterday by using a Memory Stick Adapter and putting it into my PC's internal USB card reader and I end up getting the WinXP blue screen of death. But when I access the card using my PSP connected via USB cable it works fine. I did the same thing using my SanDisk 1GB Mem Stick Pro Duo with the adapter and card reader and that works fine.

Is this a known issue with 'PSP-gaming-specific' Mem Stick Pro Duos that you have to use your PSP and USB cable in order to access it?

It might be a problem with the formatting. Have you tried to reformat the MS?
