PSP passes 2 million in Japan

PSP broke the 2 million barrier at the end of September (this site usually refers to Famitsu data).
The December lineup seems to have plenty of small but interesting titles, like Exit and Karakuri. Also in the new year Taito Memories Pocket is coming out. While it has less games than the PS2 version (20), it includes Rainbow Islands.

DS - 43,362
PSP - 31,702
GBM - 30,065
PS2 - 24,638
GBASP - 10,751
GC - 1,958
GBA - 397
Xbox - 112

YTD / LTD
DS - 1,809,768 / 3,305,364
PSP - 1,367,702 / 1,849,954
DS Lead - 442,066 / 1,455,410

Although Media Create doesn't have the PSP at 2 million yet (should cross in about 4 weeks), it's still a nice milestone for Sony. They've successfully made inroads into the handheld sector.

By the end of the year, though, the DS is going to have literally double the installed base of the PSP. There's no denying that will happen.

Do they still sell the stand alone pack or is it's just the value pack now like in North America?
You can get the standalone pack online, but I haven't seen it in shops for a while.

By the end of the year, I suspect the DS will need it.

Game Boy Micro + SP will outsell the DS and PSP in North America this Christmas.

Also I suspect DS sales in North America will pick up considerably now that Nintendogs is out, new colors are en route, the price cut, and Mario Kart is coming.

How is that relevant? This is about Japanese sales.

Not to this thread I suppose.

However, given a big enough PSP success during the holidays and beyond, Japan could in fact become the region that doesn't reflect worldwide market share.

Cause he's inferring to it's worldwide potentials? Besides it's interesting to see how the PSP/DS is selling overall why limit ourselves.

If this thread were about worldwide totals, I'd agree with you.

PSP has GTA coming too, I see an increase all across the broad for the handhelds.

Japan rarely reflects worldwide trends when it comes to gaming. That's what makes it so intereting. It's a HUGE market, yet it seems to run with it's own microcosm.

This thread is more about the PSP worldwide than the DS in Japan, IMO.

Yeah because a title like "PSP passes million in Japan" suggests a dicussion about PSP's performance in US/Europe. :lol

It doesn't mention the DS, which was the first topic to come up.

I'm sure PSP enthusiasts would rather add these 2 million to the worldwide total than discuss why the PSP is not performing as well as it could against the DS in Japan.

i think he's saying that it's better suited for this thread instead of talking about how DS is owning the PSP in Japan :P

not like there's any chance of avoiding it anyhow

Media Create doesn't count Sony's sales through their own online site, correct?

Anyone have NA PSP sales totals?
It's at approx. 1.9 million in the NA, as of August sales.

what are DS sales in NA?

edit - ah shit.. NPD combines GBA and DS don't they. :\
Just over 2 million (a little less than 200K more than the PSP).

so DS is ahead? What were August sales like with Nintendogs?

(you can also yell at me for being too lazy to search).

Thanks for the numbers guys, looks like it should be near if not have passed 2 million by now.

With Madden, Burnout Legends and a ton of UMD titles all released last month, you can bet on it!

PSP - 167,000
DS - 102,000

Damn lazy people.

do UMDs really sell the PSP? I always believed the games sold the PSP and UMDs are just what people bought afterwards. I guess I never really thought that someone would buy the PSP specifically to play movies. Especially with portable DVD players coming in under $130 now.

do you have the list of games in taito memories pocket? i don't think it's been posted on gaf yet.

There's no such list - yet.

Here's the Taito Legends list:

Space Invaders (1978), Phoenix(1980), Space Invaders Part 2 (1980), Colony 7 (1981), Electric Yoyo (1982), Jungle Hunt (1982), Zoo Keeper (1982), Elevator Action (1983), Great Swordsman (1984), Return of the Invaders (1985), Bubble Bobble (1986), Gladiator (1986), Tokio (1986), Exzisus (1987), Plump Pop (1987), Operation Wolf (1987), Rainbow Islands (1987), Rastan (1987), Super Qix (1987), The New Zealand Story (1988), Operation Thunderbolt (1988), Battle Shark (1989), Continental Circus (1989), Plotting (1989), Volfied (1989), Ninja Kids (1990), Space Gun (1990), Thunderfox (1990) Tube It (1993)

No Toaplan SHMUPS, and no Darius games from the Japanese Taito Memories: Gekan compilations. Still, Rainbow Islands is a very nice bonus for the PSP rev. (if true)

In NA? Definitely.

I'm now officially on the "PSP fucking sucks as a legitimate games machine" bandwagon.

However, it rocks my face for watching Battlestar and Lost and reading comics!

i would expect the psp versions to be based on the japanese ps2 taito memories discs, which (confusingly) are completely different from taito legends.

I wasn't asking if they seel. I was asking if they sell the system. I don't for a second think that someone who drops $250 on a system without a ton of good games is also willing to drop $20 per movie on a few flicks to go with it. I'm simply referring to the quote that it should see good sales with a slew of UMD movies coming out. So how many people are out there and saying "Wow, the PSP has a ton of great movies out for it. I should buy one."

More than likely it is someone who wants to play PSP games and then drops $60 on three UMD movies.

I've not seen a full list yet, but the inclusion of Rainbow Islands already suggests that it's different from the Japan PS2 discs. I hope they put some of the other Bubble Bobble games in there too.

It seems like the movie playback of the PSP is a big part of its sales appeal. Will be interesting how long that lasts if Apple announces this on Oct. 12th ...

It certainly doesn't take away from it's appeal.
