PSP primarily multimedia device games machine second?

It's getting ridiculous lately. ALL the way around. PSP vs DS shitfests, PS3 vs 360 pissiness. I know it's always been true, but it's getting pretty bad lately. It's gotten to a point that I've really really cut back on posting because every systems discussion goes downhill so quickly.

I've certainly played into it somewhat, but the constant derision and attacks that take place are so constant and pervasive and it's gotten tiresome.

I suppose this always happens at transition times.

I was saddened today just looking at the topics and saw the media create thread had over 55,000 views more then doubling most threads. I hate that thread because it's like the ghetto of fanboyism. As if how many consoles or games sold on your system of choice directly correlates into your enjoyment of said system.

Theirs just too much going on though to pinpoint exact reasons for the strife though. Brand loyality, person can only afford one console of choice, company killed parents..I don't know. The next 5 years are gonna get worse though.

Someday maybe they will make a universal console that plays everything, then all the fanboys and haters will have to buy that and noone will ever be able to argue whether its the best cause it will be.
I agree it can get tired but gamers talk games and consoles and whats better and what sucks, it's why we are here isn't it? And like you said emotions start raging when new competing consoles hit the scene.

The only thing I find tiring is when people try to judge people for what they play ie: "if you own the DS/PSP you must be a retard" type shit.

Imagine how lame the boards would be if there was only 1 gaming system tho...
Imagine the posts: "who thinks the red controller is better than the green?" :lol

1280x720 DivX playback on X50 (scaled down to it's screen resolution of course)? That would be very impressive.

You know I don't think any of my videos are 1280x720. Nothing on bittorrent for tv shows seems to be at that resolution, not even the shows that say they are HD. Usually the highest res they seem to be is at 720 I think and it has no problem displaying that. I usually watch them in widescreen (x50v is VGA too :D) and I usually mess around with the settings to try and get it to fill as much of the screen as possible.

How is the ghosting? That really... really bugs the crap out of me.

hmm, I didn't see any ghosting. I may play around with it more and see if that's something the lower FPS ones do.

It's the same reason it's always been. Most of the time, the person only owns one of of the consoles and is extremely insecure in the fact that other people are enjoying other consoles. This was always extreme back when I was in school. I remember getting a genesis and all my other nes owning friends were bashing it without even touching the thing (or playing it for 5 minutes and deaming themselves experts). Fast forward to now, doesn't happen so much with most of my friends since most of them have grown up, but it's still strongly happening in here. To be blunt, those vehemently bashing a system are either children or people that need to grow the fuck up.

Most of the outrageous angry fanboys are defensive of their purchases and try to justify spending their money by playing down the offerings of other companies, and it's not exclusive to one specific brand or console. Every side has an army who will laud their company of choice until the cows come home.

Well yeah, if they spent all their money they saved up from their paper route on 1 console. Adults shouldn't be that defensive, since they shouldn't be that insecure about what they purchased.

Ipod video and PSP suck for video because of how much of a pain in the ass it is to get video onto them.

Have you ever actually encoded a PSP video? It takes 3 clicks (under a minute) and a night of encoding while you sleep to encode like 10 hours of video.

Don't give me that excuse.

That is already more work than I have to do to play a video on my laptop, desktop, or Axim x50v.

Virtua Tennis World Tour is fuckin' awesome. As if I needed another reason to solidify the PSP's awesomeness as a games machine.

People ragging on the PSP either don't own it, or can't afford it. I seriously don't understand peoples' defensiveness when it comes to portables. It's like the catholic church getting all concerned about where people put their penises. it's not their business, so stop trying to make it yours.

Honestly, the DS evangelism I've been party to on occasion rivals that of the people knocking on my door. As if the stylus will save my soul or some nonesense. :lol
Does that mean I'll try to stop a friend from buying a DS? No, because it's not my money he's spending, or my tastes he's buying for. They are each great machines, and fill their own niches.

On the PSP front, I hate the analogue nub, and never use it. my hands are simply too big to use it comfortably for more than a minute or two, so I usually default to digital. Does that shortcoming somehow make it inferior? Erm. No.

It means my thumb is inferior. :)

As far as the 'multimedia machine' aspect, It's easier to bust out the PSP than it is to bust out my laptop, when I'm on a trip. If I'm at a cafe, I'll break out my laptop, because webbrowsing on my PSP would be silly. they each serve a different purpose.

Again THANK YOU for being unbiased. Why can't everyone see it like this guy?

PSP is really nice for what it does, but for the multimedia aspect I was originally responding to someone who was saying that nothing in the universe can do what the PSP does multimedia wise, which is just flat out wrong.

My PDA is definitely superior to a PSP for watching any sort of encoded movie, but at the same time even with coupons it will probably be $50 more and the games made for PDAs suck. Granted I can run SNES games at full speed, but the control is worthless. In this aspect my PDA can't even come close to a PSP (for games).

If you really love watching movies on a small screen and need to take them with you a nice PDA is definitely better than a PSP imho. Of course if you want something that can both play high end 3D games AND be a multimedia device, well PSP is the only game in town.

The difference is the screen. The screen is the biggest factor for watching movies.

PSP has the best portable screen out there. Hands down.

I have played around with my brother in law's PSP a lot and I don't the feel the screen is any better than any high end PDA screen.

There are PDA's with a screen as big?

I never saw a PDA with a screen as big as the PSPs actually. Some are within a few tenths of an inch though. I was talking about quality before. Size wise though as far as I know no PDA or other handheld media device has a screen as big as the PSP.

I am sure someone will prove me wrong now with screen dimensions of the Gizmondo two.

There are many portable dvd players out there that have larger screens. Of course people will now argue that they aren't handhelds. So it is an uphill battle because as of the PSPs release the maximum size of what is considered a handheld are the PSP's dimensions.

The difference between those dvd players and a PSP is that PSP is something you can bring out anywhere. Those DVD players are bulky and a pain to carry around. They're not very portable.

They're for like airplane rides or when you're out of town. PSP is portable everywhere.

It's relative... compared to GBA SP/micro, both PSP and DS are "bulky", "a pain to carry around" and "not very portable".

^^

Never thought I'd say this, but I disagree with you. GBASP for example is far bulkier and 1/10 the value in regards to ability.
