PSP RELEASE DATE!! (24th of march)

I just called John TV and co (who are all at the tokyopia weekly drinkin event) and there was general surprise at the spider-man thing.

John and I are both pretty sure we are getting US PSPs now.

Maybe I can have a laugh after all Nintendo eat crow quotes that's been going on latley? Or must we only laugh at nintendo.

Wha? Nintendo "eat crow" quotes? Regarding what?

I was a bit worried about the US for a bit, but if Nintendo gets Pokemon DS out this year like they plan, they're going to be fine!

I just can't comprehend the reason anyone would want to buy a PSP on day one (without a Best Buy replacement plan). The hardware's way too glitchy, the battery sucks, and now you're basically guaranteed to see a $50 price drop in the first 6 months of the console's lifespan.

I'm buying mine for ebay :P

Sony has really dropped the ball with their American launch. It is simply too unreasonable to expect the casual gamer to over $249.99. If you include a game the final total will be in the range of $300. I was all ready to place my pre-order for a psp, but I decided to wait to see the final price. I'll be waiting for my psp because I'm certain that it wont be long until we get a price drop. Is it me or did Sony just turn off the hardcore gamer?

800000 or so japanese gamers (the vast majority who spent just as much) would probably disagree.

They aren't selling this to casual gamers, they're selling to early adopters.

That said, I'm still getting one. It's not that big a bump from what I was expecting. The cost to me is memory-- I was going to play around with movies and graphics, but now I'll just use the included memory stick for game saves and skip getting a bigger stick until later.

How did they turn off the hardcore gamer? The hardcore gamer would get the system at any price.

What I think this shows is that Sony is NOT concerned about killing the DS. I think they are much more concerned about profitability and managing the launch than blowing Nintendo out of the water. They know they have a supply problem and know that they can sell every single unit regardless. This tells me that they're probably going to have VERY LOW quantities available at launch.

Me too
:D

Although this means I'll buy less. And only if I get a sense they're gonna sell for decent money. I still kick myself for having zero interest in PS2's crappy launch line-up and then seeing the things going for 700+ on ebay.

$300 for a PSP and a game

Way to appeal to the handheld market!!

expect similar price in Europe??

Shit yeah. I thought that they were going the route to avoid a Lynx/Nomad like pricing situation, but I guess they got cocky :)

Expect a higher price and expect them to sell every single unit they have. That'll really kill the Nintendo fans :lol

Another CBM soothsaying prediction come to pass :)

(ok I'll stop now)

The price itself is fine, but the fact that there only is the value pack isnt... :( But could Sony not start shipping the normal version after the first million?

Nah.

I don't see US and Euro gamers being such mugs as the Japs.

Handheld gaming isn't as BIG in Europe as it is in US and Jap.
And the US prob wouldn't buy at such a high price with the XBox 2 on its way.

I swear, for every fucking banned idiot a similar
zeldacube.gif
trolling shithead appears.

I do wish it came with a game (or at least playable demos) for that price.

Anyway, I'm excited abotu a couple of things.

1) Late march release. I'm spending a ton already early in the month on my (non video) gaming hobby, so the extra few weeks is appreciated

2) Lauch game goodness. Some of these games were "near launch" last time I looked, and I'm happy that they're planned to be released with the system.

Here's what I plan on getting right away (and partly why the price does not bother me):

Right away (these games sold me on the system):
-- Lumines(TM), Ubisoft
-- Twisted Metal: Head On(TM), Sony Computer Entertainment America
-- Wipeout(R) Pure, Sony Computer Entertainment America

And maybe soon:
-- ATV Offroad Fury(R): Blazin' Trails, Sony Computer Entertainment America
-- Metal Gear Acid(TM), Konami
-- Need for Speed(TM) Rivals, Electronic Arts
-- Ridge Racer(TM), Namco

Everyone's problem is that despite Sony's incredible feat of providing current generation graphics on a handheld and a multitude of media features, they still want a deal.

This is the same price as the value pack in Japan, once you have done the dollar conversion plus the addition of Spiderman 2 on UMD.

What is everyone's problem?

You are mad if you don't think this is a great price.

The PSP is going to be rarer than rocking horse shit at this price.

The import price is still $379 at Lik Sang.

I can't believe the bitching in this thread.

A 20gb iPod $299 and it is old tech, with a crap screen and it only plays music.

Note: I have a 3G 40gb iPod and I have PSP. They both cost me more than $400 dollars, I know which was better value and it wasn't the 6hrs battery life iPod, I can tell you.

100% agreed. PSP is a wonderful piece of technology at a fantastic price. And the launch line-up is the best in the last 15 years (maybe the SNES launch line-up was better).

This is goog news for us consumers. Enjoy your PSPs bitches! This thing will sell like hot cakes! Screw the haters! :)

Yeah, I was disappointed by the price...until I realized it was for the value pack. Meaning the price is more or less the exact same as the price in Japan. AND you get Spiderman 2 on UMD...but as mentioned earlier in this thread, an UMD with playable demos would've been much, much better. But I guess giving away Spiderman 2 for free is a way to inform consumers about the movie player capabilites of PSP.

Only problem I see is that, of course, you're forced to buy the value pack...and that kinda sucks. But as long as one can afford it, it's not like it's a bad deal. The price in Japan was already low...didn't most people expect $299 for PSP (excluding value pack) in Japan at first?

Also...if the PSP doesn't perform well at this price...I'm expecting a price drop.

$300 (or so) for an Xbox and a PS2

1) Obviously you haven't seen the fact that GBA in the US is wayyy outselling the GBA in Japan and the UK just sold a million GBA units over the holidays. Add in the way the DS has sold in the US. Japan is currently in 3rd place as far as handheld sales go.

2) You're second comment isn't worth commenting upon, except to say that you'd better watch out. You may not be long for this world.

I called it months ago..sony didn't want to take the losses afterall...not to say they still are taking some loss.

Sony mentioned (twice already) that it'll be profitable by summer.

I'm sure they'd introduce a stand-alone version before christmas for $199

For now though, my one worry is that the bullshit "starter kit" they're going to push on you at EB is going to duplicate the stuff that's already included in the Value Pack.

Same here. Maybe (after puting my foot in my mouth after that one week ban fiasco) I've got my groove back, or something :)
