This just came out today, but I haven't seen any demos, any reviews (aside from Famitsu's, which are as good as worthless), and haven't found any substantial impressions on 2ch. The problem was that the demo videos had hella slowdown (which may have been a compression mistake), and I'm pretty sure the game has no link-up play.

Nevertheless, I hope it's as good as the DC TXR2, which I played the ever-loving shit out of. I didn't like the newer PS2 ones as the control was kind of fucked up.

I demand impressions!

I'll (hopefully) have it Friday. How about you get the game now and give us importers impressions instead? :D

And risk blowing forty-odd bucks? Hah! I'll let Dcharlie be the sacrificial lamb instead ;) I haven't bought it because there's no real confirmation if it's any GOOD yet.

i would have bought this last night, but my after football boozing didn't finish until around 1am.

I'll be picking it up today, so i'll give impressions once i've tried it out.

*looks up*
lol - so that's how it is! ;)

I'm really hoping this is as good as it looks, because it looks fucking wonderful. That said, it seems like this game went from starting development to completion in like a month, so I'm kind of leary. Come on, J-GAF, get to the impressions.

And has a domestic release been announced? Ubisoft or Konami would be good candidates, considering Lumines and Death Jr.

i want a shooter on PSP more than anything else

something like Ikaruga where it's not just an out and out blaster, something that has lots of replayability...

but yeah, too many racers !

aren't you people shit sick of racing games yet?? man oh man.

SILENCE, WRETCH! TXR is about free-form TOKYO ROAD BATTLE!!! Get out of my thread before I run you over with my Silvia!

BTW, did the GBA version of this get axed or what?

I mainly want some good Japanese RPGs (Or Western, but I'd really love some 2D RPGs. Bring over Tales, Namco, and quickly!). Shooters (either hori or vert would be perfect for the PSP, just play it sideways for verticle) and on-foot action games would be very welcome, too.

I thought they nixed the free driving mode for the PSP version.

so...any reason to hope it's 60fps? :/

i really don't need another shutokou battle game...i've had txr 3 sitting around in shrinkwrap for nearly a year now. i don't need another psp racing game either. but if it's 60fps, damned if i won't buy it.

They added licensed cars at the cost of realistic commuter traffic (the manufacturers didn't wanna be associated with illegal highway racing), so the other cars/trucks were replaced with "pace vehicles" or some shit.

BTW, I went to Yodobashi to try it out, but all the demo kiosks were filled with Romancing Saga and that gay Nintendogs shit.

edit: Off 2ch: Initial 24 second load times, 3 second load times between menus. No wifi play confirmed.

I hear people say this all the time, and it always sounds wrong to me. A quick glance in the dictionary suggests the word doesn't exist, so can someone explain it? Are people just mishearing wary maybe?

I'm not picking on you btw, I just hear it or see it every so often and never remember to ask.

Leery is the correct spelling, I believe ;)

No wi-fi in Shutokou Battle? WTF? That was like the only reason I was thinking of buying it :(

okay, i picked this up tonight...

what the fuck is this abomination?!?

Jesus - the load times are terrible, the road tears so you have black specs everywhere,
there is near zero traffic, the usual "drive around looking for races" is GONE and we have two game play modes, team battle is just sucktacular (1 v 1 race with next to no traffic) , Time attack is racing around an EMPTY HIGHWAY against the clock... and no wireless...

did i mention the load times?! 25 seconsd initially, 5 seconds for most menus , about 25 again before a race...

I`ll play it some more, but i`d give this one a miss. Unless something fantastic happens, this looks to be a bit of a turd.

Damn, that doesnt sound like a TXR game at all! :( I loved TXR on DC... and this version was supposed to one of my PSP EU launch purchases.... :\

yeah, i loved the dc version. MAYBE things will pick up, but i don`t hold much hope.
The load times are stupid though - it`s amazing.
In the garage screen, you can select a car...
when you change car, it takes around 10 seconds for the new car model to be loaded in (fortunately you can still get through the menus while it:s loading)

Whelp, that's that. Thanks Genki! F*ckers...

Oh, and while my interest has dropped to zero, I'm curious to know if the framerate is at least 60 fps.

aren't you people shit sick of racing games yet?? man oh man.

Aren't you sick of mini-games? Or did you abandon the DS too?

Genki how could you do this to me?!?!??!?

Goodbye cruel world!

I would be extremely nice if somebody could explain to me what this game is all about and what makes it different from other racers like Ridge Racer or GT4. Thank you.

Yeah I played this a little bit today. Control feels very floaty...car steers too much to either sides with the tilt of the analog stick. Graphics are underpar Ridge Racer...game felt boring just driving through tunnels...ah so much gray and black, wonderful!

Did RR raise the bar too high from the start?

So, i`ll explain how this all works now...

Team Battle
rather than free roaming and picking races in the busy tokyo highway system, this is now all controlled from a map system. Each area is controlled by a different racing "team". The idea is you chose an area in which to battle all the teams racers. Each racer has a "level". So after you`ve picked an area, you pick whether you want to race clockwise or anticlockwise round that route. Once this is done, you are then give a TV "scanner" and you can scroll through the rivals... this "scanner" takes a fair bit of time to find (ie: load) a rival, but once loaded, shows the rival on the highway. Hit circle and you race that guy. You are dropped straight in to the 1 on 1 race.

The racing itself has been dire so far - the computer always gets away from you at the start and then you are playing catch up until you inevitably pass them (or not depending on whether you`ve upgraded or not).

Now, with zero (or near zero) cars on the track, this renders the game totally pointless - there is just no darting in and out of traffic. I`m hoping this remedies later on, but the game is just so insanely dull at the moment, i`m not sure i`ll make it that far.

The load times are easily the worst on a PSP game so far - which is saying something. THe graphics, whilst showing some tearing on the road, on the whole are good and the presentation is generally pretty good. However, potential buyers should definitely try before buying - with the main mode that made TXR so good, and the whole traffic element seemingly either reduced or removed , then it`s not the exciting game that they previous version were... hopefully it`s a change of pace to allow n00bs to pick up the game, but so far the signs aren`t good.

The time attack mode makes me more suspicious of the lack of traffic being a design decission. I mean... a timed race around an empty highway? it doesn`t get much duller than that! You`d expect the traffic to be left in to add some challenge.

Anyways, time for some nintendogs! ;)

DC - you're little review makes me really glad I didn't pick it up today....Thanks! Man I really wish a fun action/adventure game would come out for PSP. Or even an original RPG....

*sigh*...

I'm getting a little tired of just watching movies on that big beautiful screen.. I want some variety in games...

In my opinion all points to the fact that the game was actually rushed...I can't see any other explanation.
From the shots it looked pretty good.

Gimme Initial D Portable, SEGA! You know you wanna do it! Wi-fi play plz and all the Eurobeat you can cram down my throat! I'm a whore for this shit!

Fuck, $60 gone; it's already been shipped to me. Maybe I can sell it to some unsuspecting customer... :D

I think the reason why it's a collection of short individual races is because Genki couldn't figure out streaming. All they could do is load in a HUGE chunk of highway one at a time for each race. SCREW YOUUUU!
