PSP Unit Quality survey.

The US launch should have most or all of these issues resolved, right? Not that any one of us would know for sure, but considering that they're developing the same hardware...

One would hope so (i really do) but with Sony's "can do no wrong" attitude who knows. I'd imagine the problems with the UMD drive to be the most easily addressed and fixed problems. Stuck/Dead pixels i think is going to be a random crapshoot through at least the first couple of years unless Sony's QA undergoes some serious overhauling.

I have one stuck pixel. I also had the exact same issue as Lyte Edge -- my square button was a bit crappy at first but after playing with it it seems to have fixed itself.

"So are we going to attempt to be as empirical about this with all other systems?"

yup, we will. And especially for any system with an obviously large number of imprefect machines.

Its probably too expensive to use class 1 quality screens (no dead pixels at all) so there will always be dead pixels on some PSP screens. I think its the same situation with most of the cell phones and their tft screens.

No dead pixels.

The right button on the d-pad squeeked for a few days but it seems to be mostly gone now.

No dust under the screen.

Nothing is loose or broken yet.

I got ONE "unable to read disc" error when changing from Ridge Racers to Lumines a week back but never got it again.

I was playing around with manga jpegs and the zoom on the PSP when the entire PSP unit froze once. I couldn't replicate it but it was so bad that it wouldn't even go into sleep mode. I had to turn the entire unit off and turn it on again.

I guess so far I'm pretty lucky. :D

squeaky right d-pad. Square button doesn' t respond well if you press on the left of it.

But really, you'll mostly get problems replied, so its more a 'what problems does your PSP have' rather than a quality survey.

BTW, if there is a DS quality survey, put me down for "I don't feel like playing it anymore".

Will? Why not start now - cover the current generation of hardware at least.

And don't focus on the systems with the larger perceived proportion of imperfect machines more than the others. Getting as accurate an estimate of every system's "perfect:imperfect" ratio will help create as clear a picture as possible of who the offenders are and how big their offense is relative to the alternatives.

Further, poll also to determine things like total hrs used per unit, general care and storage, etc.

Just some suggestions for conducting as thorough and impartial a survey as possible.

Has Sony spoken about any of the problematic machines?

Holding out hope that the US revision would atleast be better designed than the Japanese ones even if slightly (ie: more stringent dead pixel allowance).

"Will? Why not start now - cover the current generation of hardware at least."

not a bad idea at all if the mods don't mind - will add a DS one given it's the most recent machine.

Will do, thanks for the suggestions.

okay, as per Kachings suggestions, if possible could people add (i know a lot of these will be rought)

1. Average daily usage (hours)
2. Total guestimated usage time (hours)
3. Storage method (hard case , different case)
4. Any reported accidents or drops (... Bishop :( )
5. Whether you use of screen protector or other protective visor / other protective measure
6. Purchase date

Anyone else think of anything worth adding?

d.c.

Considering that the problem most people are experiencing is dead/stuck pixels I don't see a point in having questions about "how careful you are with the system?". 99% of the problems listed are there from the minute you turn on your PSP. It's not like people are dropping them and having problems from that point on.

well, i guess this will come in useful later as an aid to determining system sturdiness (DS/PSP/Gizmo...)

"You're quite transparent, David Coyle."

That's somewhat unfair.

If there wasn't any issues with the machines, then possibly.

But the issues are there - i dunno, it's not like all the people with issues are making them up.

If that makes me anti-sony for pointing these out, then so be it.

It was a bloody joke - you're one of my favourite posters.

what baffles me is why are all these "anti-sony" fans buying PSP's?

:lol :lol :lol

after seeing the amount of dead pixels (my #1 concern) i am gonna have to get the gamestop guy to open the unit at gunpoint in the store to check before i buy it...

DCharlie, for the record maybe another important point to start investigating would be which PSP batch each person purchased. I got mine from Bebpo and he bought it in Tokyo on dec 23 or 24. It seems to be that a bulk of the more problem plagued PSPs are from the launch batch. Something to look into. :)

As someone who's looking to buy a U.S. launch PSP, gotta say that this thread definately makes me question that to some degree. Probably still will, but I'm going to hang onto that reciept for dear life.

Updating with DC's new requests (and it's a stuck pixel damnit, it's not dead yet!!!!):

1) 30 mins
2) 20 hours
3) Value Pack soft case (I have a feeling this thing attracts screen-killing dust like a mofo)
4) No
5) No
6) 10th December

squicky keypad first, but after a few days of usage its gone
for the rest perfect.

1. Average daily usage : 0.5
2. Total guestimated usage time 10
3. Storage method : nothing
4. Any reported accidents or drops : nope
5. Whether you use of screen protector or other protective visor / other protective measure : not yet but will in the future
6. Purchase date : semwhere in december :)

1. Average daily usage: 0 for most days, only play on trips
2. Total guestimated usage time: 40-50 hours
3. Storage method: Official soft case
4. Any reported accidents or drops: none
5. Whether you use of screen protector or other protective visor: nope
6. Purchase date: Dec 12th

I have a perfect unit, thanks to Dcharlie for scoring one for me.

Went snowboarding last weekend and we played the PSP non-stop during the times when we weren't sleeping or snowboarding. Seems to be holding up fine so far.

The PSP seems to be more durable than my snowboard so far...

Am I the only that feels almost certain, that we won't be getting PSPs in NA until after April/May rather than the "End of March..."?

These hardware issues could easily cause a delay. That coupled w/ no firm release date tells me it'll be summer time before it's released.

I have too many dead pixels! They're very small and only visible when the screen is black but I hate them!!!

It's a Sony.

I dont think it's fair to say that. I've never had problems with my PS2. PSP just seems like it was rushed or they tried to cut corners to save costs.
The screen is probably coming from the bottom end of the manufacturing lot. LCD's that are barely passing QC and would normally be scrapped they can probably get for real cheap and use them in PSP's.

Sounds like most of the problems are related to Sharp, though...

I'm sure you said the same thing about people complaining about dead pixels on their DSes (which Nintendo was replacing FOR FREE, by the way, while Sony isn't even repairing them)

It's a well known fact, Nintendo customer service >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> everyone else.

Wait what qualify's as a dead pixel? Does if have to be white or red? I can only see these 2 white dots when the screen is all black.

1. Average daily usage: 3hrs
2. Total guestimated usage time: 70hrs
3. Storage method: Official soft case
4. Any reported accidents or drops: none
5. Whether you use of screen protector or other protective visor: nope
6. Purchase date: Dec 12th

Just received my unit.
Damn you bastards !
I couldn't play RR well because I always had on mind the question about if I had or not had a Dead Pixel. I think i only have one but there seems to be dust under the screen.
I doubt I'll have the guts to open the unit...All the other things seem ok to me.

User: john tv
Purchase date: Dec. 12, 2004
Purchase Region: Japan
Average daily usage: 1 hour or so
Total usage: Many hours (or so)
storage method: Value Pack case
Additional protection: Famitsu PSP screen cleaner thingy
Accidents + consequence: Girlfriend's fingerprints, suspect awaiting trial
Machine state: One dead pixel, one piece of dust. Both are hardly noticeable.

Top games:

1. Ridge Racers
2. Minna no Golf Portable
3. Lumines

In that order.

some features you'll love to hate...

1) you can't see the buttons like "volume up/down" "cancel" "home" etc... in low light
2) the battery life flashes when you are low.... but guess where that light is? yes, below your hand that rests below the fire button config....

sounds trivial, but it isn't - you can't see how low yer battery is because of your controller hand...

I just pre-ordered a US PSP last night at EB (they are only taking pre-orders until the end of the month for those interested). I hope most/all of these issues are fixed before then. I definitely think I'll be purchasing the extended warrantee. I never purchase those things b/c I think they are a waste of money but for the PSP it seems like the smart thing to do.
