PSP Value Pack comes with UMD Demo Disc?

I don't know if this has been touched upon, or even how accurate this information is... but during the IGN mailbag today some dude who said he pre-ordered the PSP Value pack from http://www.jp.playstation.com said the description included a UMD Demo disc. IGN didn't disagree, so I was wondering if anyone else can confirm this. That'd be a nice perk if I do decide the buy from the official playstation website...

Hi,
juts to let you know that from today you can ORDER your psp on www.jp.playstation.com even if they sent an email yesterday explaining that the order for people who pre-preorder it can confirm their order from december 4th.
So if you pre-order one you should go NOW because the more you wait the later you will receive it.
Another thing is that now the system will have include in the package a UMD DEMO DISC (it's in the description when you order a PSP Value Pack) but i think its the same for the normal one. Another thing is that some games are not yet possible to order (like Lumines) Is this a sign that this title will also be delayed ??? i think so.

That's all

and congratulations for your site ...

Sorry for my english i hope you will understand me.

Thank you very much for the info, Thomas.

We'll be getting our PSP the same day as you are - our pre-order went through this morning. Maybe someday, you'll meet up with our Japanese correspondent and play some WiFi multiplayer with him!

Anyway, the IGN mailbag also touches on other things in their 12 Days of PSP special. So check it out for other stuff.

Damn, sucks for the people who didn't preorder at the site and went for the stores instead. Stores and other outlets should be able to give this away to those who preordered PSP Value pack like me :-(

Some pretty good insight regarding the analog stick:

"Er, this is one of those odd areas where I've only had the chance to play it a few times, and my impression of the system seems entirely different from what other people have said about it. It's a free-gliding, self-centering analog controller -- it operates like a flat DualShock, although with some differences in the technology From what I recall of it from a month back, it does have a few points of note -- the analog seemed to have a few 'catch' points every couple of degrees pushed in (I called that clicky, others have said that this isn't "true analog", but I'm pretty sure those click points are just the spring agents awkwardly working), and it centers itself, but may take some adjustment over playing consoles due to its centering speed (its short range of movement may take some getting used to as well -- some games seemed squirrelly with it at TGS, although Ridge Racers felt pretty tight.)"

I like the fact that it has a somewhat strong self-centering mechanism.

It's true. It's listed as a video disk of some form, though. It doesn't specifically say UMD, but it specifically says video footage.

bundling PSP with like several 15 minute shorts of 'mainstream' Sony Pictures movies (Spiderman 2, Bad Boys 2, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, ect) a couple of Sony music tracks, and game demos would be a badass way to get the ball rolling here in the US.

I can imagine consumers being pretty impressed seeing that on a kiosk.

Yup, IGN confirms...

When Sony Computer Entertainment announced the release packages for PSP -- the Standard system kit and the expanded Value Pack -- we were left a little curious by one omission: there's nothing to check out but the hardware! Neither PSP package included a demo disc for trying or viewing videos of PSP titles -- sure, Namco's shipping enough copies of Ridge Racers for nearly every PSP purchaser to own that game, but we want more, more, more.

In Japan, SCE may be rectifying that situation -- gamers who have put in their purchase of the Japanese version of the system through Sony's official PS World retail outlet (sorry, they only ship in that country, although they're already sold out anyway) are notifying us that the order slip also includes a Sampler Disc as part of the package. We have only heard from those who've picked up the Value Package, but it would make sense for this to be tossed into the Standard pack as well. There is no word yet on what games will be featured on the disc, if the disc will be UMD format or DVD format, or if anything will be playable if the disc is a PSP-format release.
[Ed.Note - Originally, we were told and reported that that the disc was mentioned as a UMD release, but a more accurate translation from our Japanese correspondents has the pack-in as being a "Special Video Demo Disc For PSP", which could be any format.]

While demo discs are still a rarity at launch (neither Xbox, PS2 nor GameCube included a playable or video demo disc in the launch package), the low cost of disc media, the win-win benefits to players and publishers, and the recent proliferation of middleware development suites that can more easily spin off game code into bite-sized demo pieces (a big boon for time-pressured programmers) will hopefully make this a thing of the past. The biggest restriction, of course, is time -- developers are already up against the clock in making launch games, and doing a demo adds that much more time to the work.

While we're not sure whether the Japanese disc will be playable or just video, we're hopeful that the release is at least in UMD format so that players can pop it in right away and see what's coming up soon for the system. Nintendo added a demo for its upcoming Metroid Prime: Hunters to the US edition of its DS system package. Hopefully, SCE America will follow SCE Japan's lead (and keep up with Nintendo -- their pack-in demo was one of the most fun things for the system ... we're not saying this to be competitive, but it'd be nice if the US PSP demo were equally cool, OK Sony?) and put together a US UMD Demo for its release here in early 2005. We'll have word on what this special disc includes when the Japanese system launches on December 12th.

Awesome. Maybe they'll make this an across-the-board thing for the US launch.

NO!

Another game pushed back for Delaystation Portable.

I hope the official playstation magazine has UMD demos as well, hell you wouldn't even need the packaging like the regular demo dvd's.
