PSP vs DS : Do you really care?

And if so, why?

If you own one, do you have sort of beef with the fans of the other? How about it stating it directly here, rather than muddy up thread sabout one system or the other?

I have a PSP, no DS, and absolutely no problem with anybody who likes DS better. Peace. But stay the fuck off of PSP threads unless you have somehting to add besides a thinly veiled "PSP is d00med/DS is better" ploy.

Becuase I really don't care what you think about my system, but am tired of all the FUD.

I'm sick of the anti-DS FUD, too, but I see less since I read less of the DS threads. Swap all the proper nouns in the above post and it still applies.

Edit: damnit, typoed the subject.

I've got a DS and I will buy a psp when some great games are out or when it becomes cheap(whichever happens first).

But, do you *have to* say it?

So its fine to say you regret getting a game, but you can't say you regret getting a system?

I am not going to change just to avoid offending people who tie their fate to a piece of hardware.

It's not about you regretting it, it's your need to go places where it isn't warranted to say so. Unless you don't do that, in which case the shoe doesn't fit.

there are a good number of guys on both sides who troll ds/psp threads--but there are several obvious instigators who cause more disruption than the others. if you want to deal with the FUD, start calling out and punishing those guys, instead of allowing them to continue to operate. you'd probably get better results doing that than just telling the trolls to keep out.

I'm all for more liberal use of the banstick.

I don't :)

Same.

But I too obviously have no problem with people who like the PSP better, be it for games, movies, graphics, whatever their preferences I'm not going to begrudge anyone their taste. That's why the most annoying flamebait comments (which I'm sure nearly everyone's been guilty of at some point) are just the absolute proclamations like "I don't know how anyone could like this stupid game, it's so terrible and boring" (except when it's about a 3DO game or clearly a joke/hyperbole). That said, it will never end, so better to just have a laugh (e.g., by reading some of the statements in the ubiquitous "popular games that suck!" threads).

Not accusing Grug or anything, but I would bet that a good percentage of the people who say "I've owned both systems but I had to return one because it sucked" are liars.

I don't even care for people stating a preference, but yeah, it's the "I don't know how so-and-so could like that" or "system X is clearly better" posts that really irk me.

FUD= Fear Uncertainty, Doubt-- it's marketingspeak (pretty old) for putting down the competitor's product.

All the reports of launch 360's having problems are a classic example. Playing up DS's graphics vs the PSP or putting down the touchscreen is another. Saying PSP games are all ports is another. (One example per major player, to be fair.)

i think the people who get offended by people trolling their systems are worse than the trolls themselves.

if you're gonna be so insecure about something then don't buy it, you obviously don't have enough faith in your purchase.

I didn't return my PSP, I am holding onto it knowing that it will definately get some worthy titles eventually. But as present, aside from watching Family Guy and Pure Pwnage episodes on the Tube, its a non-entity.

I can take pics if you insist.

this is just a message board on the internet, let people say what they want.

does it really bother you that much ?

I see how this place could be much better.

I find it amusing that anybody would could consider somebody who wants less trolling to be worse than a troll. That makes no sense.

As long as people are free to have opinions and voice them here, you'll have a hard time telling who has a legitimate subjective opinion and who is just flogging their dead horse system bias.

There should be no restriction on what people can say... but I agree that there are people who bash given systems (and manufacturers) in every thread to the point that its clogging the board up with redundant reading material. And they should be punished.

I own both by the way.

I don't really care since most people have their own opinions. I really just dislike the bashing or agenda of one or the other just to try and make you feel better about your purchase or blind loyalty. My disgust for that is multiplied by a hundred when said persons don't even own the console. Just realize different tastes for different people.

Don't know if just owning both would effect one's bias though, sometimes they are too ingrained. All I know is i've sold both DS's and PSP's to people at work and so far everyone was happy with what I talked them into because they fit what they needed and liked.

I own a DS and have no problem with PSP owners. The only thing I do have a problem with concerning the PSP are those mental midgets in the media that kept screaming before the launch "ZOMG TEH PSP IS THE REESIN HUMANITY EXISTS IT WIL CHANGE DNA N HISTORY 4EVAH!!!1" when it's really just a slightly neutered portable PS2.

That said, I may buy the PSP one day when the price drops to something...not crazy. So I can play the Metal Gear Acids and the upcoming Gradius Collection.

I dont care enough to get into the whole sales figure and tech specs fights. System wars in general are really tiring.

For the record, I prefer DS at the moment. PSP has some promising games coming though and Ridge Racers still rocks even if it isnt the best in the series.

I've got both.
Both are great systems with great games and I hate "ds rox, psp sux" (or vice versa) idiots.

i own both, and lately ive been playing my ds much more. but at psp launch i barely touched the ds for a straight month and a half. but now its been pretty much all DS and some GTA LCS (gta, imo, is only good when portable:))

I don't have both, and still find the constant feuding annoying. My not owning a PSP is due to time issues, as I've got quite a GBA/DS backlog to work through. I'll get one next year and am looking forward to it.

Bottom line, they're both good systems and each have different strengths. I can see where people would like one and hate the other. However, it's been a year now, so those people really need to get over it.

I care for a few reasons. The first is mainly out of fear for Nintendo in that if the DS were to bomb, Yamauchi's famous quote might've come to fruition. I wouldn't mind if it were 50/50 between the two handhelds, but I can't deny that I feel really good when the sales charts come in and DS is doing a great job. The other reason is that it's just fun witnessing the copetition and viewing mediacreate/NPD.

I have both and I like them both. It's tiring. I feel like a lot of the energy that was poured into weird neurotic issues with the GameCube are now constantly applied into handheld battles on behalf of the DS.

The whole consumer brand religion thing is the most tiring aspect of hardcore gaming which I wasn't even aware of when I was more casual in my news/discussion about games. I miss that aspect.

Inasmuch as it tanks threads that I'm interested in reading, yeah, I care.

Otherwise, Go DS, Go PSP.

I don't have a beef with people who like PSP, but I am annoyed by people who have PSP and bash on the DS. Both are good systems for different reasons, and those qualities should be recognized even if it's not your preference. The PSP in many ways represents everything I hate about the industry, but that doesn't keep me from thinking it's an impressive piece of technology.

Even if DS died tommorow there are enough good games on it to have justified my purchase. It doesnt matter to me how well it sells, I bought it for nintendo games anyway.

Eh, I only care to the extent that the arguments waste space that I have to scroll past to get to more pertinent discussion. Other than that, people have whatever tastes they have.
Personally, unless the PSP really drops in price and suddenly develops an enormous and diverse library of good games, I don't care. Why? Because I just don't like sports games or realistic racing games and at least 75% of the PSP's good offerings fall into one of those two categories--and meanwhile the DS has an awesome strategy game in AWDS, platformers in Kirby and Mario, non-realistic racing in Mario Kart, sidescrolling action in Castlevania, an RPG in Mario and Luigi, and simulation in Animal Crossing. There's really just no comparison for me since those are among the genres I actually care about.
Others have more "Western" tastes and can't get enough of their sports titles, racing games, FPSes, and so on [edit: and current-gen graphics and multimedia functionality], so the PSP is their particular natural choice. That's their own situation and I understand the justification behind it even though my own tastes differ greatly. No big deal.

[Edited a second time to clarify two things:
-When I'm talking about the PSP's "good offerings," I'm referring to games that are well-received by critics. I can't think of a PSP example, but a DS example would be Lost In Blue; I'm sure some people loved it, but it didn't get good scores from reviewers. Likewise, maybe people really enjoy some of the non-racing, non-sports games on PSP, but those aren't the PSP titles that end up being highly-rated.
-Also, I'm not trying to generalize about people's tastes. When I say "others have more 'Western' tastes" and so on, I'm not saying that everybody who has a PSP or wants one is like that, but some definitely are--and for those particular people, PSP is the obvious choice.]

Jiggy, you're doing exactly what causes those flame-fest in the first place-- generalizing about somebody else's tastes. You could have left it off after the first two sentences.

I really don't care. I mean, I have a PSP I don't have a DS, I just don't see the need for 2 portable devices in my life. I don't know where the hate for either one comes from actually. The only reason I would care about sales is the fact that I want games to keep coming out for the PSP, if sales decline the games will slow down as well.

I get annoyed at people who have a DS or PSP and act like the other platform is dying a slow death or whatever. Especially people working at EB or GS. They should know better than anyone.

I don't play handhelds, but if I had to get one, I'd get a PSP simply because it plays movies and music too.

No.

I guess very few people really care about that, but have fun messing around with fanboys on both sides. I mean, it's still GAF..
