PSP vs DS : Do you really care?

The way I look at it is this...

You don't play DS or PSP, you play games.

Discussions of which system is "better" are irrelevant, considering the lineup of games is constantly changing. For this reason, I also shy away from the Xbox 360 vs PS3 vs Revolution debates, because in the end, who cares? There will always be a mixture of great/good/crappy games for every system, and normally its not until well into the system's life cycle that healthy libraries are formed i.e. what is happening right now with DS, and what will be happening soon with PSP.

I don't like the DS because of what it could have been.

Take away all the gimmicky and make a "GBA 2" and I would have been happy.

Is anybody really thrilled about the touch screen? I mean really now? All the games you're playing, could have been easily done without touch screen unless Nintendogs or something.

I also don't like PSP's current libary either.

It's just the PSP has a future for me.

So in the meantime, until Nintendo releases a GBA2 or PSP actually gets some games I want, I'm going to be playing my GBASP and wondering why you guys are argueing when you could just be playing the better portable, GBASP.

The DS is technological degeneracy codified and sold to jingoistic subcreatures that think lo-fi kiddy graphics are a sort of rebellion against the evils of mainstream gaming.

WHAT.

Fuck your stupid thread topic!

Is this also the reason you hate indie rock? Because lo-fi is considered "cool"?

Absolutely gay. DS am win, plis.

I currently like the DS better, but I'm gonna pretend indifference like everybody else. So no, I don't care.

YES. Really and now. It brings you ten times closer to being able to execute moves in meteos as fast as you can think. It wouldn't be the same without it. The touchscreen controls improve a lot of games even if they could have been done without it.

PS: I hate it when people make lists to prove shit. Reminds me of when I did that during the dreamcast era.

Would you please explain how Kirby, Trauma Center, Feel the Magic, Wario Ware:Touched & Electroplankton would have been "easily done" without the touch screen?

Put me in the "I hate idiots" camp.

There are three kinds of opinion statements which show up in the PSP-vs-DS threads, and only one of them is legit:

1) Statements about personal preferences. No problem -- thanks for sharing. People like different things for different reasons.

2) Statements which are vague to the point of being flamebait. There is no way that you can make a blanket "DS is better than PSP" or "PSP is better than DS" statement since "better" is an undefined term. If by "better" you mean "the one I like better," then rephrase it as such. If by "better" you mean something else, then clarify what you mean and provide evidence.

3) Statements which are factually incorrect. Not to pick on borghe, but he made a statement at one point in one of the myriad PSP/DS threads which claimed (paraphrasing) that no game on PSP offers as much playtime (either on a first pass through or replay value) as certain games on DS. Again, if what he meant to say was that no game on PSP would get as much of his playtime, then that's what he should have said in the first place. Another classic claim has to do with "ports." A port is an almost identical copy of an older game, or (maybe) a simultaneous multiplatform release. (I'm less comfortable with lumping the latter into the "port" category, but I'll let that go for now.) Anyone who claims that most of the games on PSP are "ports" and is citing games like Hot Shots Golf or Wipeout Pure as evidence is wrong, period.

Not everyone who indulges in #2 or #3 is necessarily a troll -- you'd have to be doing those things intentionally. I suspect that some people ARE doing it intentionally (and fuck you if you are), but I also suspect that there are a lot of people who are uncritical thinkers or sloppy writers.

Personally, I don't care , i only own a DS and i love it but i have nothing against people who enjoy the PSP over it, i just don't like certain people's post patterns trolling in every DS or Nintendo related thread saying exactly the same
things as they said in the other 100's threads they've trolled before just with different words, just to piss off some people who actually participate in a polite and constructive way in the threads and also the fans too. The same applies to anti sony and xbox posts.

None of those interest me. I've played touch and standard wario ware is just as fun.

No, fags rock. So do black gamers.

*almost* every major group, then.
Sweet. Let's be friends.

P.S. I hate fags.

Edit: *sigh* I guess I'll give me two sense on this issue...

Look bitches, I have both a DS and a PSP, and I think they both are gay. I bought my PSP mainly for television shows on the road, and it doesn't do that very well. I bought my DS mainly for Animal Crossing DS, and that doesn't come out until tomorrow. :/

Sorry, pal, I can't befriend fag-hating Nintards. :(

Especially ones so emotionally stunted that they enjoy playing with virtual dollhouses. :(

...

two "cents"

Well if you didn't enjoy any of those games then the DS is not suited for you , it just doesn't appeal to you wich is fine, it's just a matter of taste . I personally think tha the DS also has a very bright future with the upcoming titles and the fine library that's just getting better and better, for me at least.

OKAY GOD, dick is okay.

two "sense"

I like virtual dollhouses. It allows me to be gay... virtually!

The only people that would put down either in an effort to make their favorite seem better are children and adults who still haven't grown the fuck up.

Greg, get that cartoon tit-obsessed hack Halverson to post here. If you do, I'll be your bestest pal!

Ah, you're going to have to up the ante for that one. But I like your moxie, kid! Keep making me money!

I own both, and will get any game I want that comes out for either platform. It's interesting to me only from a sales point of view, because the promises of a steamrolled Nintendo were so high on GAF's prediction radar that seeing sales for the two platforms makes those very predictions funny and sad.

So, bring on the games I like.

What do I need to do to "up the ante" as it were?

I know! You'd need to have a picture taken of yourself holding a Girls of Gaming issue, smiling, and giving a thumbs-up. Also, I'd need proof of purchase such as a receipt or affidavit from the sales clerk where you bought the magazine.

And you'd need to autograph, and send, the picture to me, your new best friend.

The only reason I "care", having owned a DS, is that my gaming sensibilities are completely offended by Nintendo's insistence that as they become less relevant to the gaming market imposed gimmicks are the "future of gaming". No, blowing and yelling at your console are the future of the Mario franchise.

Why do I now have to use a stylus to do what I've done with a game pad perfectly fine for three decades?

Innovation?

Save the "innovation" for peripherals like any right thinking company. Oh sure, a peripheral may bomb; but if it bombs that's just the gaming market telling the company it's a dumb fucking idea. If it's a good idea and well supported it will survive.

And the NintendoDS doesn't support my existing Gameboy game library. Okay, pull the "how many GB games do you really play" card. But why should I be forced to buy a new version of Tetris when I already own one I enjoy (Tetris Plus)? Considering the NintendoDS is a marvel of antiquated technology it boggles my mind that they couldn't get GB support in there as well.

Nintendo propped up it's "third pillar" on the back of the GBA line. Were it not for GBA titles, the DS would have floundered before publishers started to release content for that wreck and it would have joined the Virtual Boy and 32X where it belongs.

I look forward to NintenAnal Beads and the Nintendo fans proclaiming the genius of controlling games with your bowels. Morons.

Don't ask me why I know this, but constipation doctors have computer games where they hook up wires to your ass and you race the car by pushing your bowels in.

Moving on.

Oooo, that's a tough price -- especially having to purchase something as utterly insulting and awful as "Girls of Gaming". Hmm. I'll see if I can muster the intestinal fortitude.

I got my PSP, I'm fairly happy with it, but I mean fairly. My library is still small (Ridge Racer, Lumines, Darkstalkers, GTA Liberty City Stories)

Sonic Rush on the DS makes me want to buy one, I will wait for a price drop or some 2nd model of DS to be released. Nintendo always makes a GBASP, GBASP2 or GBAmicro model change down the line. The DS i'm sure will get some kind of 2nd model type comming

Indeed.

I love the original games on the DS. I love playing EMUs on the PSP (and, since I'm not upgrading my BIOS, those and the early games are all I'll be able to play in the near future).

The DS's form factor is not great, but I've adjusted to it. I hate the PSP's d-pad, but have become reconciled to the analog nub. (Thankfully I'm not a 2D fighter fanatic.)

Both systems need work, neither is ideal. That doesn't negate the fact that this handheld generation is the best in history: both systems are excellent in their own ways and have some really fantastic games that will satisfy a very wide audience.

The day Sony releases a PSP with a non blurry screen and a good dpad and buttons is the day I'll be a PSP fan. Worst 250 dollars ever.

Reasonable hate for any system should be expressed, it is what keeps people from making expensive mistakes.

Own both, but I only own DS for Ouendan pretty much. Also Jump! Superstars, but I have no one to play that with. Nothing else on DS interests me. And yes, that includes Mario Kart.

I've got both, and I love to watch the bickering. It's hilarious.

Do *I* really care? Well, yes. I care about their success because of development support, and because competition is good--especially close competition. The awesome DS lineup is a direct result of the PSP's existence/threat. I absolutely love the current situation: Nintendo on top, but struggling to stay there. Not since the first half of the N64's life has Nintendo had such a fire under their ass.

Jiggy, you're doing exactly what causes those flame-fest in the first place-- generalizing about somebody else's tastes. You could have left it off after the first two sentences.
Yeah, but then my post would have been an unqualified point.

I will admit, though, that I probably should have stressed that my definition of "good offerings" revolved around their critical reception, not the tastes of individual gamers. I'll go back and edit that in.

i dont see how gaming enthusiast wouldn't be interested in the DS vs PSP war. i mean, sony came in and usurpted nintedo's throne in the console wars, and a decade later they aim to take away the only piece of the market nintendo still had a firm grip on: handhelds.

yeah, the fanboy flamewars do get annoying but, as an industry pseudo-analyst, you really can't deny how interesting it is

Meh... it'd be nice if nobody really did care, a place of peace would be nice. But, do you think the "I'm selling PSP to get a DS" and " I'm selling DS to get GTA:LCS" threads will stop? I wish, but doubt it. It's not like I lose any sleep over such arguments though. :lol

I love both the handhelds. I've never played handheld game systems as much as Ive played PSP/DS. I honestly couldnt say which system I like better at this point. I do love that big PSP screen though. :)
