PSP Wireless Security Still Broken

The good news is, at least the web browser that's provided with the 2.0 firmware can connect to WPA networks. However... if you put any of your game UMDs in and start them up, you'll first see the new 2.0 firmware connection screen. Then you'll find that despite that, any WPA network in your list is greyed out, and cannot be connected to. Meaning your only options are, as before, to make your wireless network insecure, or to not play online. It is likely that future games will make use of WPA, but all current games look to have been left out in the cold.

for some reason i thought something like this would be handled on the OS layer and not the game layer... guess not...

That is incredibly dumb... how the hell did they miss that? That doesn't even sound right... I know some folks here have done update... can anybody confirm?

And once again Sony proves to have a horribly conceived interface.

Sigh. I just can't believe that they don't know what to let hardware handle and what software should take care of.

That said, the benefit of the doubt should be given;; no major system has every needed regular firmware updates.

Is this a problem? How many decent internet playable games are there really? When all is said and done, virtually all the decent online PSP games will have the WPA support I guess.

Made the update, can connect without WPA, fails on passkey authentication with WPA. Not using WEP since it's uslessly crackable 'security' for the rest of my wireless network.

The worst part is that it took Sony a WEEK to put out the 'Do Not Download' disclaimer for other regions. Those of us who took the shot and had no other problems with the 2.0 firmware may now be screwed until the next Firmware revision.

I'm hoping the 2.0 NA will either:
a) install over existing 2.0 firmware
b) will be 2.1 firmware

Chris,

I find it to be a problem because my connection failures are both in-game and at the browser level. So I get NO Infrastructure connectivity at all. Also consider that not every game will support WPA play. As far as I know, Monster Hunter (!!!) still has not been confirmed to have anything more than Ad Hoc mode, but with Tunneling Software I'd be able to play online. Oh wait...no I can't, because I can't connect to secure Infrastructure networks! Anyway, It may not be a big deal in the end...looks like I may need to set up a 'Unsecure' preset on my base station.

Turns out the problem was my Airport Extreme Base Station. Everything I was inputting to connect was correct...but I had to downgrade my AEBS firmware to 5.5.1

Once I did this, everything worked perfectly. Now I can try out the tunneling software for the PSP!

Much Happier in MTL,
