PSP2? Samsung says it.

It seems that Samsung has said that they are making NAND Flash Memory for the PSP2 and that SCEI wants to use Samsung Flash memory as an HDD instead of an UMD Player in the possible PSP2.

I think we're talking about a new iteration of PSP, not a next-generation PSP2.

even if the title 'PSP2' is used

As Stephen Colbert would say, you sir have a giant set of balls... brass ones! I salute you.

Also, the first post and the linked article didn't make a damn bit of sense to me with regards to a possible PSP2. Talk about a leap of assumption.

This sounds vaguely familiar, like something that was floating around a few months that confused the fact that Samsung is already proving NAND Flash Memory for the *current* PSP - there's 64 meg of NAND Flash mem inside the PSP already, provided by Samsung.

Nightbringer seems to specialise in these type of threads :)

Isn't it 32mb of flash memory?

I dont understand getting rid of UMD but Flash memory comes in big sizes nowadays. See the new 4GB Walkman phone for example.

I know that PSP uses Samsung Flash for the firmware and the OS, the problem is that this time we are talking about NAND Flash Memory from Samsung for PSP2.

Yes, I believe the current psp uses NAND flash as well.

Yes, Samsung supply Sony with the MCP which holds the NAND flash(32mb) and DDR memory. But there was also a more recent announcement that Sony were buying even more NAND flash memory from Samsung. Volumes which would account for 1/5 of Samsungs entire production capacity.

Some of that is very likely due for the PS3 for firmware and other storage functions, but the rest may well be for a PSPee (if you will) which could have a large quantity of on board memory for storage and may be what this article is talking about.

[edit]Google news to the rescue: http://sg.biz.yahoo.com/060215/15/3ypiy.html Seems that Sony/Samsung NAND deal might be off.

Right, that's the one I'm thinking of. And that turned out to be related to shipments for Sony's walkman line, not the PSP.

Wasn't this reported a while back? I'm sure Izzy posted something about Samsung supplying Sony with 8GB NAND flash memory chips...

Right. Samsung is talking about PSP and not PSP2.

PSP 2 talk at this time would be great it would force Nintendo to step up to the plate and give more news. But this news sounds a little off.

MS should also think of getting in on this action.

Yes, and I question the truthiness of this news.

edit: they need to make it look like this old fan mockup. srsly. this is hot. clamshell is teh winnar.

I'd love a revision with a built-in camera and gps. That'd be pretty cool, although I think gps is still probably a bit too expensive (?)

If you're going to tighten up moderation, do it right and ban Drinky Crow. Or at the very least, make him only use his 'true' account (he said he had one where he acts normal), his BS flaming really has to stop.

Awesome. We haven't had this thread in... 2 days.

Thread derailment! This thread claims TWO victims! dun dun dun

Oh well.

Now I am a troll because I have posted a link that talks about Samsung NAND Memory for the PSP2.

Is not my guilt if Chosun uses the word PSP2 in the middle of the rumour.

If its a new PSP im fucked. :(

I highly doubt anyone thinks you are trolling in this thread.

I don't think GPS would cost too much. A lowcost GPS chipset could be put in for a 3-5 dollars for each PSP. The problem is that it would take some programming to get it working, but they could proably recover the cost by selling a UMD with mapping software that is needed to enable the GPS.

Thanks for kicking off the new era, dumbass.

On-topic: I want PSP to use SD mem cards. Just say no to memory sticks and Sony's propriety.

I wonder how much of this is positioning. Anonymous source claims Sony wants lower prices, will go with HDD. NAND prices fall on massive demand shock that would ensure...

If it is, then it looks to have worked very nicely for them.

I wish, but I don't think I've ever seen a Sony product post mem stick that has a non-proprietary slot. Their laptops and PCs don't even have SD/CF slots.

But the prices of Pro Duos are coming down so fast. Buy the time PSP2's come out we should have at least a 16 Gig MS Pro Duo on the market. Don't you think?

The point is, compared to SD or MMC, memsticks don't come down fast enough. Why?

If they release a PSP with 8GB of NAND Flash for the end of the year and name it PSP 2.0 the people that has bought the first PSP will be pissed.

I'm bored so I'll translate the best I can:

South Korean Semiconductor Maker: Will PSP2 memory be NAND? HDD?

Deutsche Bank has indicated that Samsung and other domestic semiconductor makers may not be able to accept large-scale orders of NAND-type flash memory from Japanese game makers.

The information is from a Bloomberg news report about the Deutsche Bank released on the 15th, but the report failed to give a reason why Japanese game makers would have trouble having these orders fulfilled.

Bloomberg reports that Samsung refuses to comment on whether Sony is considering to use a Hard Disc Drive rather than NAND flash memory for data storage on the "PlayStation Portable 2 (PSP2)".

So basically Samsung didn't say shit.

Others have debunked this as a deal which is no longer in play, but the concept fails even basic rational inspection:

1) Your first post implied that flash memory could be used instead of a UMD drive in some future PSP. How would anyone buy a game? How would you store a game if not in use? Even if you had some ability to transfer data on/off the device, wouldn't you be restricted to only having 3-4 games with you at any one time?

2) Why would Sony want to start including a ton of internal storage as standard equipment? That would harm them in two ways. First, it would raise the base cost of the unit, and the price of a PSP (pack) is one of the biggest factors -- if not THE biggest factor -- affecting their marketshare. Second, Sony gains a significant amount of extra money by selling Memory Stick Pro Duos. How is adding a lot of onboard storage to the PSP itself a better business case for Sony?

Hah, so after all that, it appears to be the same report as the one I linked to earlier about the problems with the Sony/Samsung NAND deal.
