PSPs in May, baby

Mejilan

Running off of Custom Firmware
This thread is two-fold.

1.) Thank g-d that hideous pink GUI is gone. I like this green. Nicer than March's green, even.

2.) Any decent games coming out this month?

*goes back to watching The Matrix on his PSP*

Got Hot Shots on my tentative list. What's Smartbomb?

Basically its a puzzle game where you difuse bombs and stuff. Sounds and looks interesting.

From EB's product description page:

EB said:
The World is under attack from a crazed bomber who has set up an intricate network of bombs across the Globe. As part of a specialized Bomb Disposal Unit, it is up to you to diffuse the threat. Time is running out. Can you save the World?

Smart Bomb delivers a tense gameplay experience as players are faced with a series of fast paced 3D puzzles designed to obstruct the player from getting to the detonator - the heart of the bomb. The puzzles take full advantage of the 3D environments possible on the new PSP handheld entertainment system. Navigation in, around, and through the bombs gives the player such a feeling of immersion that the PSP handheld feels like a time bomb in your hands.

Hmmm, kinda puzzled out, but if it's good and unique, I'll consider it.

Besides, if Wario Ware and Polarium weren't already enough, we've got another Wario Ware and Puyo Pop Fever coming out soon.

Midnight Club 3, Smart Bomb, and Hot Shots Golf.

Woot. For me, i'll pick up Hot Shots, MC3 when the price goes down, and Smart Bomb...never. Getting awful reviews.

Who has reviewed it?

Yes, the best news is that the pink is gone.

I won't be satisfied until Sony releases a firmware update that allows custom pictures/small videos/polygonal objects as backgrounds, though.

Having a custom background (composed of pictures and polygonal models) run off a rudimentary scripting language like JavaScript (or more likely, a variant of it) would be ROCKING.

Custom backgrounds would ROOOOOCK.

The hell with Smartbomb then, ugh. Don't want any racers either. :(

Hot Shots, fuck yeah! Smart Bomb sounds mildly interesting too, but I dunno, Core sucks.

And I didn't mind the pink, but I really wonder what many of the average males that picked up a PSP this month thought about that. :p

I was over at IGN looking at the release date calendar and almost cried when I saw this:

June 1, 2005 Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim

=/ They need to seriously update that list.

And isn't there a firmware update scheduled for early May? Could've sworn I heard that somewhere...

OPM gave it a 1.5/5

I know it isn't saying much, because of OPM, but a 1.5/5 is pretty definitive.

I've never had much faith in OPM's reviews. A lot of times I've seen them give 2/5s to games that I really enjoyed.

The video on IGN makes it look sort of like Wario Ware in that the game is comprised of a series of small puzzles. I saw the Japanese trailer and it looked like it would be a nice game that you could play either in short bursts or long periods of time.

Who the hell buys UMD movies? Just get the full featured, glorious DVD and rip it.

Oh... and Hero sucked. Hard. ;p

Here's a list of games coming out this month for the PSP:

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 05/03/2005
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition 05/09/2005
MVP Baseball 05/17/2005
Smart Bomb May 2005

Seems like an excellent month for releases... if this were the DS.

512mb is more than enough for a 2+ hour movie with good - very good quality transcoding. And you can get that for the price of roughly 3 or 4 UMD movies. It'll pay for itself very quickly.

I know, I already got a 512mb card. But while the videos I encoded look very good, they still don't compare to the quality of UMD movies. I do plan on encoding more videos but I'll likely continue to buy a few UMDs here and there simply because it's just easier.

Anything decent slated for June? Time to hit up the lists! Brb.

Yikes. EBGames doesn't list shit. Period. Nada. WTF? 2 pages of nothing, at least half of it just crappy accessories and UMD movies. Man, do they need to update their database or something?

HSG is really high on my want list as well. As great as Lumines is, i reallllly need another game :lol. According to the IGN preview the game was cleaned up a little but nothing major was added since the JP release. Shame, because i was really hoping for an online feature. On a plus note though, they kept the bastardization of the game to a minimum for the american release, unlike HSG 2-4.

Unless you like bad UMD movies (only my opinion though) it's going to be a really really dry period this summer for the PSP. Looks to be about the exact same dry spell as the DS had post launch. About the only thing i'm looking forward to after HSG is picking up a 1GB stick at a reasonable price.

This a new game or a port of HSG4? Which HSG games came out here in the US, and are they easy/cheap to acquire? Thanks. Jarrod, I need a list please!!

Edit - Yeah. PSP's gonna be going through the drought us DS early adopters are just overcoming.

I'm pretty sure it's just been HGS1-4 released in the states. The first two were on PSOne. The second two were on PS2. You can get HGS4 new for like $20 now. They are coming out with HSG Online soon.

Traded in some launch games today to pay for HSG. I'm also getting MVP and maybe Midnight Club 3 if the reviews are good.

All of them have been released here i believe. HSG 1+2 for PS1 and HSG 3-4 for PS2. 1-3 should be pretty easy to find used and cheap (3 is a greatest hits title), not really sure about the status of 4 (haven't kept up).

One thing to keep in mind is that the characters were changed a ton between the JP and US releases of HSG 2-4. 1 was left pretty in tact so if you start with that one and move up you'll see a noticable difference.

Thanks folks. So HSG Fore is 4 on the PS2, right? And Open Tee is what they're calling the PSP game?

the ign preview made it seem like they held back on including stupid americanized characters in 'Open Tee'. which i'm glad if that's the case

HSG4 is for PS2, yes. And it $19.99

It's pretty much a complete drought until the fall. Everyone seems to have basically thrown all their resources at getting a launch game or two done on time, and now we have to wait for second-gen games to arrive.

Yeah and Open Tee was developed specifically for the PSP.

Pretty sad that we're getting so excited over a game that should be fun but isn't a "blockbuster" by any means :lol. Man we need more games... c'mon E3!!

That's right buddy, PSP is guaranteed to sell like hotcakes now! :\

/sarcasm

What a terrible lineup, Sony is stupid >_<
Considering the PSP launched with a lineup that is still better than the DS's entire library, I think it's fair.

Are they gonna Honky up the characters for HSG PSP too?

Give me my bad bubble headed anime wanking characters PLZ!

Are you even reading this thread? Was said 2x already

A person can only play so many racers and sports games, and that's if they play them at all lol.

I'm glad they're not raping "Open Tee" as much as the past HSG games. I gave them like a friggin essay why they should just keep the JPN characters in the HSG Fore beta test...I think they finally realize how stupid the characters are

true that there's too many racers on PSP, but there's a game out there for everyone. puzzles? Lumines. strategy? Metal Gear Acid. action/rpg? Untold Legends

I'll more than likely be getting Hot Shots Golf, and possibly Midnight Club 3 if it is getting good reviews. Now all I have to do is finish these bloody Max tours in Ridge Racer!

Hot Shots is the only PSP game you need. I have like 5 games and haven't touched the others.
