So I'm looking to buy a new PS2 after mine busted about 6 months ago. I was just wondering if there have been any problems with the new model compared to the older version? I assume all the functionality is there (aside from my multitap...sigh)? Would you recommend I get a new one or search for the old one?

I had an old PS2 so the drive was dieing on me. My opinions might be skewed since the drive was faulty.

I definitely say go for the new PS2, I've noticed that the read times were faster. For the same price you're getting a smaller unit with a built in Network Adapter. Unless you need a Hard drive to play FFXI, etc. or want to backup the games you own onto an hdd for faster access I don't see any reason to get the old unit.

Of course I'm probably missing out on a bunch of technical specs/problems so hopefully the more knowledgeable will chime in soon.

Well as long as the drive doesn't crap out on me like the PS2 did...

Can't go wrong with the slimline PS2. It's fucking hot and makes the Gamecube look big. Which lets face it, was a tough ask.

And no DREs here yet either. I'm not expecting any off this model. It's all good :D

I bought a slim one back in Novemeber for no other reason than impulse and so I could move my old PS2 to the bedroom. For some reason the slim model won't play Guilty Gear X even though I don't see a single scratch. Otherwise it's cool, but if the size isn't important there's really no reason to pick one over the other.

I read tons of reports that the laser dies very quickly if you mod it, so it's worth considering or researching more into if you're planning to install a modchip.

I wish they had the big clunkers for sale still, because these PStwos look cheap and nasty and are prone to laser problems. I would take the bigger one anyday, this ones just too small :lol

I'm also thinking of buying one , my PS2 died yesterday :( .
Statements likes this makes me wonder how people treat their systems. I've had 3 PS2s and none of them have ever died on me.

I treated my PS2 exceptionally well (like all my AV electronics), gave it wide breathing room, regularly blew the dust out of the system, and was always careful with placing and removing the discs. My PS2 was only moved between locations a few times and was never treated harshly, the drive simply started to make a loud whirring sound and I knew it was getting worn out. Outside of that it worked great, never gave me any trouble.

My guess is its just luck of the draw from which manufacturing plant or quality of the parts they installed.

Its just a rug unfortunately and the store doesnt have online.

My old model PS2 was a champ and the slim one sucks. It can't play movies without skipping (a very common problem with this model) and now that's bleeding over to games too. I'll have to call Sony and send it in to get fixed.

I've also had a Gamecube and an Xbox die this generation. All the consoles pretty much BLOW for durability this gen.

My slim PS2 plays movies just fine. Looks pretty good when playing them in progressive scan, too. Besides, the damn thing is just too sexy to pass up.

Until the slim one can take a hard drive if I have to replace my PS2, it'll be with another PS2 and not a PSTwo.

i think you just suck at consoles.

- Smaller
- Sexier
- Loads games faster
- Improves performance on some games (such as GTA:SA)

I've heard rumors of overheating problems, but today alone I put the machine through its paces for about nine more-or-less consecutive hours watching DVDs and playing games (including the laser-heavy GTA:SA) and the machine only felt moderately warm. I get no stuttering during movie play, either.

My PSTwo skips (or plays a bit jerky) on movies only when they are on DVD+RW discs. Everything else is fine.

My launch PS2 is in my bedroom. Every 6 months or so I have to pop the top and disc cover off and manually clean the lense with a qtip and isopropyl alcohol. After that, I think it reads everything as quickly as my PSTwo for a few months at least. Still going strong. My launch PS2 will play DVD-R and DVD-RW discs perfectly, but doesn't like my +RW's.

hmm... i don't know if this is old, but it seems like the new PSTwos can use USB harddrives now:

I like the new model better. I can fit it easily in my backpack. It makes the old model look like Xbox

Just make sure it gets plenty of air, i can get hot quickly if it's enclosed.

Sure seems to load faster to me.

I just replaced my old launch PS2 unit with a PStwo last week (drive finally kicked the bucket), and the improvement was DRASTIC. Of course, I was used to a PS2 whose drive was on its last legs, so the effect was probably exaggerated a little bit for me, but even still, it definitely seems like it performs better and faster than I can ever remember my old unit performing.

Anyone care to confirm/explain this?
I can't explain why it happens (although I'd assume it has to do with the drive assembly/laser being better built) but it definitely does happen. IIRC, IGN's review of GTA:SA even made mention of the fact that textures will load quicker on a PSTwo, so you'll get less ugly texture swapping in front of your eyes.

Not deffending him, but I had my first PSTwo console changed. It died after playing some GTA:SA. The new one works like a champ but it runs quite hot when playing for long hours.

Despising its cheapness (man, that lid sucks) I'd buy it over the old model if you are not planning to stick a HDD.

It just might load games faster.

I own one of the newer model PS2s.

I brought my copy of Mega Man AC over to a buddy of mine's house. He owns one of the first models. The first thing that I noticed when playing it was the longer load times.

Of course, I might just be crazy, or his PS2 might be malfunctioning, but it is something I noticed.

I got the same problem. My PS2 died a few months ago (god, what's with Sony, almost all friends I know with PS2 had the same problem and they have replaced their consoles after 2 years gaming) and I wanted to buy PStwo, but the serie got some serious problem then. All PStwo lens were made to explode after few hours play, and to avoid this, you need to put some integral scheme etc so I bought the silver PS2. It looks cool either.

I love my pstwo, Saturday night I accidently left it on all night (feel asleep with a dvd in it) it was spinning all night and I woke up all in a panic thinking it wasn't going to work ( my friends keep saying the pstwo's overheat) it worked fine and later that some family came over and we played Sfac most of the day with zero problems....

I've got my PS2 1.5 years ago never had any problems and treated it good . Friday i put a demo from the latest OPM2 in it and it makes a weird noise and it didn't read the disc . I know people who spill drinks on their PS2 or let it fall out of their hands ( :lol ) and they dont have problems , but my PS2 which is treated good died .

I just remembered that there is a homebrew app out there that lets you measure the quality of your DVD drive. It only works with modded consoles, though. Maybe someone could use it to make a benchmark or something.
