*hopes for a Xbox360 announcement at E3*
With a PC version around it's entirely possible there is a Xbox360 port. But knowing Naka's love for MS, I very much doubt this will happen.

Shoulda been this way from the start, but I guess late is better than never :P

Im shocked at an apparent "good" decision by Sega

About time they stepped up with the online PS support for the PS2. Now all the needs to be known is whether or not its battle system is going to be real time or not.

This game doesn't look like it's online though, unless I'm taking your post the wrong way.

Well EGM's next month cover sotry is PSU, and at the back of the previous issue it basically says its online.

"We don't want to give too much away about the online play and profile configuration, but we'll leave you with one word: breasts."

So it sounds like its online to me going by that.

Cool. I find it a bit surprising, considering EGM said it was one of the best looking games they'd ever seen, and this isn't something next-gen, but I can't wait to see in-game stuff none the less.

Hmm, that's weird.

This is my reasoning why it's not online:
1. There are two main characters introduced.
2. There are lots of cutscenes shown.
3. It's debuting in Weekly Jump.

Oh this is ridiculous! I don't regret buying the GC modem adapter cause at the time the GC was young and fresh~ya never knew what if may be used for other then PSO. But now out of the blue they're making the next one PS2/PC??? So I'm going to have to buy the PS2 modem adapter for one game on a dead/dying system? UGH! Friggin Sonic Team!!

It seems likely that he answer to your conundrum is the most obvious one! Occam's Razor, and all.

EDIT: That would be jiggle's explanation, yes.

I fail to see why this would be on PC if it wasn't online. Seriously, that's the money spot for online RPGS. Why, look at FFXI. PC play ensures that it'll continue to available (and therefore profitable) once the PS2 hardware is obsolete. I'm sure Square is happy about that decision, especially with PStwo and all.

At the same time, I doubt how massively online this will be, unless the game makes use of the PS2 HDD or Sonic Team are masters of the PS2 hardware. Best I can see is a central hub where everyone gathers and then branches off into parties for adventuring, much like PSO only....uh, a bigger hub. Maybe something like Monster Hunter - where you'd pick a server, then an area, then a town - complete with an Xbox Live-esque friends list to make the formation of parties/playing with friends quite simple.

Wouldn't be suprised to see wider range of classes and more variation on the playstylings thereof, that's the only way (as of 3:30 AM) I can see them expanding on the PSO concept if they're not going to MMORPG it. The changes in playstyle from PSO may explain why Naka doesn't consider this to be a continuation of Phantasy Star Online, though offline and online modes would make it possible for this to be both Phantasy Star V and Phantasy Star Online 2 as the E3 trailer hinted.

Hmm, I'd also expect loads and loads of character customization.

All this speculating is hard work. C'mon EGM, hurry up!

PSTwo has built in network adapter.

edit: nm, sounds like you already have a ps2

FFXI has a lot of cut scenes and developed NPC characters, so I wouldn't rule an MMO out based on those reasons.

Ya I gots one~an never saw fit to get the adapter since TM:BO turned out "eh" and GT4 Online never happened.

This isn't PSO. It's a different online series. Naka's already said he wants to continue the actual PSO series, but this isn't part of it.

That's what Episode 4 is. While Episode 3 remains the final chapter in the Ragol story arc of PS/PSO/PSU, episode 4 takes place after 2 and before 3 so 4 is his continuation of the PSO series.

This is the 3rd ST disgrace in a week.

1.) Shadow not Sonic game
2.) Their Hunter's License servers screwed up on Monday and since then nobody including myself has been able to renew their PSO HL's meaning we can't play online!
3.) PSU = PS2 & PC

What kind of treatment is this? Especially after all the money I've given them! (Not counting DC versions either!)

PSO I & II = $49.99
PSO I & II plus = $29.99
Hunter's License x23 = $205.85
Total = $285.83

Not mention 2000+ hours of my life spent playing.

I'm really really really at a loss of what to do/think/say right about now -_-;

Umm... GC is dead. What is the point in making it for the GC? This isn't about alienating their fans. This is just you trying to make a buck and not lose massive amounts of money on a game. You, as a fan, should be glad they aren't making it for GC because you don't want to see it flop and have no more made after that.

because it's obviously not gonna flop on ps2...

Maybe it will maybe it won't. But it certainly has a much better chance of selling on the PS2 than any other current platform. It's still going very strong.

Do: Buy a PS2 Network Adapter.
Think: About how much fun you will have playing 1000 hours of PSU on PS2.
Say: "Thank you, Sega, for making a new online Phantasy Star game for a platform viable in both Japan and America!"

That's why they're making the PC version, silly. Think of the PS2 version as a cash advance while the PC version slowly garners interest (the money kind).

it seems sega takes some good decisions after all. bringing that game to ps2 might get a new and bigger audiance. the only problem ist, that it might be a little to late.

I don't think it's a good decision to keep pissing off your own fans. Sega keeps dwindling their own fanbase. Saying "hey the ps2 userbase is bigger!" hasn't worked for every game. You make a GC port along with the PS2 game and you accomplish pleasing your fanbase and potentially reaching more customers. The way Sega did it only left them with potential.

With the way you're talking about fanbases you'd think they were walking away from just selling a version of this game that sold millions.

Finally. Tired of holding my breath. :)

Lots more info in the new EGM -- you definitely won't want to miss it.

Are you guys going to spill the beans on how Sega is going to fuck this one up? I can clearly see one of the characters holding a gun there....>_<

If PSU is Phantasy Star V, or at least a spiritual sucessor to PS II and PS IV I will be so thrilled. that would make up for PSU not being a Xenon-Rev-PS3 game.

:D

Gameplay-wise or in terms of the storyline? I personally think the latter is more probable, but that's all speculation on my part.

Aha...ha....haha....hahahahahahaha!!! Sorry, couldn't help myself :lol

At any rate, if this game is going online at all I hope it is entirely online with server-side saves. Although this is Sonic Team we're talking about, didn't even Blue Burst get hacked?

If it's offline...is Overworks still around? I'd trust them more to do a real offline Phantasy Star RPG than Sonic Team.

I was hoping for a Dreamcast release too :(
:lol

You folks saying it might be offline were worrying me a bit. Glad it's coming to PC. Might be hard to justify paying for both this and WoW at the same time, though.

I love the PSU intro movie shown since last E3 -- one of my all-time favorites.

Yuji Naka's certainly come a long way. From openly dissing Sony and PS2, to praising PSP and EyeToy, and making Phantasy Star Universe PS2 console exclusive.

Dead/dying system? Huh?

Sure, GameCube support is drying up, but that's just how Nintendo is. They move from one platform to the next, shifting most of their support for the previous sytem to the new one instead (ie: SNES->N64, N64->GC, GBA->DS, etc). Microsoft seems to be going much the same route, which is understandable given that they're hoping XBox 2 will help them advance in a certain cold-shoulder market, so we'll likely see the majority of XBox support dry up after this summer/fall.

But PS2? Likely not going anywhere. Much like PSOne, I expect to see fairly strong support for the PS2 for another 1-2 years after the PS3's release. It'll likely start drying up in 2007-2008, and trickle down to next-to-nothing (like token Madden updates and budget shovelware :P) around 2009.

And since you seem to be somewhat of an RPG fan (correct me if I'm wrong...), I'm sure you can see where I'm coming from here. The PSOne saw some of it's best releases in that genre in 2000 or later, with the last notable release in April 2003 (Final Fantasy Origins). Looking at the upcoming titles for the PS2, it seems to be doing much the same, with some of the biggest titles hitting this year and next.

I'm sure Sonic Team realizes this. They know that the PS2 is the only system out now with much of a future left ahead of it, and that's likely what influenced their choice of platform. But as BuddyC said, the PS2 will eventually become obsolete, leaving the PC version as the long-term money maker. It's a smart decision all around, really.

Not dead support wise, dead int he same way it has been since xbox game out. Why couldn't this be next gen game? Next gen will be here when this game comes out.

That'd make sense for graphics, but would it make sense for sales? The best selling RPG last gen came out months after the PS2 was released (DQ7). The PS2 has a huge fanbase that it can sell too, and most signs point to the PS3 being BC so you'll be able to play it on that too.

I hate when games get released late in the generation. I've hated it since Zelda on GBC. I'd rather this be on PS3 (not a PS2 game on PS3).
