PSX/N64 games that have aged well graphically?

Although there's not many of these that don't look like shit today--there were some. Off-hand, I can think of one: Crash Team Racing.

I wouldn't say any N64 game in 3D has, just for the blurry textures and low draw distance. I think Vagrant Story looks nice, but I know that comment is gonna get a lot of snobby pricks in here downing it.

I still think Symphony of the Night looks great.

FFT does too, given the relative simplicity of the graphics.

Sin and Punishment for one, and some of Rare's games still look pretty good. It's amazing how well some artists can work around the limits of technology.

I think Banjo-Kazooie still looks pretty good. It's less blurry than most N64 games IMO and has decent texture work...

I also agree with the R4 choice, the simpler look of that game holds up pretty well

Tomba.

I don't think many games at all hold up, unfortunately. 3D was just so mind-numbingly awful during the PSX/N64 era, pretty disgusting. I think though 2D games still held up nicely :P

Some recently revisited games,

Majora's Mask (GameCube Zelda's collectors edition!)
R-type Delta
FFIX

Those ain't pics of the PSOne Crash Team Racing -- last I checked, the PSOne didn't have anything resembling texture filtering or 640x480 output. ;)

I went on a MGS marathon last week, playing through MGS3, MGS1 and then MGS2 and I was suprised how much fun MGS1 still is. The graphics are obviously PS1, but it holds up well. I even found new plot points that relate to MGS3 and MGS2 that I wasn't aware of originally.

The Snake/Meryl conversations ("...You're such a bastard.") are still great.

I seem to remember all of the PS1 Crash games being noteworthy because they did run in 640 x 480. I could be wrong, though.

It's funny, VS really did remind me of MGS in a lot of ways. The good ones. The 'damn that cutscene was badass, and now I actually get to fight the badass thing that was in it'

I'm stoked that the director is involved in FFXII, after the abomination of X2 and the 'wtf' of XI being XI instead of... you know, FF Online?

Now where's a new Tactics Ogre? :P

As for aging well...

most PSX and especially N64 games look so, so horrible. Eye gougingly bad. Only the ones with stylized art, or 2d, or that really pushed the system still look decent

Seconding/thirding Vagrant Story, especially on a PS2 with texture filtering. It's amazing what they did with such low poly counts. VS has better character animation than half of this generation's games.

I think Banjo Kazooie still looks quite good. I started playing it after that Diddy Kong Racing thread. Diddy Kong Racing also has held up suprisingly well. It all looks quite clean and it's pretty fast too.

I think Indianna Jones and the infernal Machine for N64 is probably one that still holds up pretty well.

MGS. The lack of texture filtering added to the gritty look of the game. (and I really loved that soundtrack too, I was sad to hear they changed composers for the sequels =( )

Banjo Kazooie was probably the best-looking game on the N64, and it still holds up pretty well.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time's graphics are showing their age technically, but artistically it is still very beautiful. I just love watching those sunsets at Lake Hylia.

I think F-Zero X looks great on the N64. Its a bit bland, but has smooth as silk 60fps action.

I find it funny/strange how most people today keep saying how 3D was so ugly on PSX & N64 and they can't go back to it, yet they have no problem playing 3D games on DS... Is it the small screen?

Super Mario 64
Banjo-Kazooie
Diddy Kong Racing
Star Fox 64

IMO are some games that still look decent. Mostly because they're bright and colorful.

I think PSX games have aged a lot worse, but that's just my opinion.

A lot of the gripes that people have over the DS are because it has that "PSOne" gritty look to its 3D.

The N64 may have been blurry, but to me, it was easier on the eyes, especailly for the brighter/more colorful titles.

Anything Rare did besides Perfect Dark and Goldeneye... those two just don't look very good to me anymore graphically.

Agree with many of the aforementioned ones.

Want to add Xenogears.

edit: Legend of Mana is quite beautiful still.

Where have you been over the last year?

Banjo-Kazooie, MK4 (N64), Donkey Kong 64, Paper Mario, Mario Tennis, Beetle Adventure Racing, SOTN, Tekken 3, R4 (you wanna talk about soundtracks? Here's the king).

Just pulled out Tomba the other day actually (it's in my studio). Doesn't look as hot as I remember.

Saga Frontier II...one the best looking 2D games out there...all the more reason I hate Kawazu so much. How can you make a game that looks SO GOOD yet it's completely UNPLAYABLE!?

Nights still looks good.

Yes but the 3d on the ds is often times much less pixelated as was seen on the psx/saturn/n64

I wish I still had my Saturn so I could play NiGHTS and Panzer Dragoon Zwei in 16:9 mode.

How could there possibly be only one mentioning of r-type delta in this thread?

Oh, and thunderforce 5 maybe.

Ugh....they did? I thought Harry Gregson-Williams did MGS2 and 3's soundtrack as well?

HGW had nothing to do with MGS1's soundtrack, which is what argon was saying.

I think in general the 2d stuff looks almost new because there is so little 2d done today there is very little to compare it to. Stuff like Legend of Mana still looks great today, IMO

It makes me wonder what the capabilities of hi-res 2d GG quality rpg would look like these days on the current breed of consoles.

*sigh*

My dreams will NEVER come true.

It'd be awesome...maybe next-gen machines will be capable of watercolor graphics like those in SF2 but done in real-time. Not like anyone's gonna make something like that anyway. :P

Oh. I thought he did the soundtrack for MGS1. I personally thought the music in MGS2 and 3 were pretty much better all around.
Seriously. The main MGS2 theme (don't know the title), the one from the original E3 trailer, is so fucking epic. The 60s James Bond-esque Snake Eater song is pretty cool too. Definately helps set the mood.

The MGS1 song was still good, I just think it goes MGS2 > MGS3 > MGS1.

You mean like Atelier Iris? It sucked :D

Granted, it wasn't super high res, but it was still a modern RPG. Relatively. Albiet not a great one.

But yeah, I'd love to see a high production value, high quality 2d rpg on a new console.

Dunno if it'll ever happen. I wonder what Square is doing with the new Mana games.

Tactics still looks great. Most 2D in general. I can't stand *most* PSX/N64 era 3D (with the Dreamcast launch I pretty much stopped playing both systems).

I'm really sad that 2d is dying out. I wish people would understand that 2d and 3d are not just different in terms of graphics but gameplay as well. Some games belong in fucking 2d. LIKE SONIC.

When 2d dies, a part of me will die.
3D graphics on a 2D plane.

Only Sprites are dying, 2D gameplay still has some supporters. There are many very good reasons for sprites dying.

I know it's virtually impossible to fund 2D games on next generation consoles because of the cost of art asset creation but (good) 2D has a charm of its own and it will be sad when they are all but gone (when the DS successor comes out, probably).

That's its name. The original theme sounds like it was composed by the cast of Stomp compared to Harry's version.

I don't remember hearing the main theme at all during the game. (Maybe at the end credits? Its been awhile..) I really liked all the 'sneaking' music in MGS1 though, and the ambient sounds fit the arctic theme.. and I liked how the tracks sounded similar but gradually got more and more intense as the game progresses. I haven't played MGS2/3 though, so can't really compare the composers styles.
