Putin blamed what he called a "Cold War mentality" on the part of some U.S. officials, but likened their demands that Russia negotiate with the Chechen separatists to the U.S. talking to al Qaeda.

These are not "freedom fighters," Putin said. "Would you talk with Osama Bin Laden?" he asked.

Putin said the Chechen separatists are trying to ignite ethnic tensions in the former Soviet Union and it could have severe repercussions.

"Osama Bin Laden attacked the United States saying he was doing it because of policies in the Middle East," Putin said. "Do you call him a freedom fighter?"

“Why don’t you meet Osama bin Laden, invite him to Brussels or to the White House and engage in talks, ask him what he wants and give it to him so he leaves you in peace?” the Guardian quoted Mr Putin as saying sarcastically. “You find it possible to set some limitations in your dealings with these bastards, so why should we talk to people who are child-killers?”

Russians are rallying around Putin, btw. Seems.... familiar. I say they take Eastern Europe back while they have our deepest sympathies.

Jeez. A jingoist who is using national tragedy and terrorism as a distraction from his shitty economic and domestic policies, corruption and enacting a police state. But at least Putin isn't stupid.

Honestly, who else thinks that the Chechens have proven to be WORSE than Osama Bin Laden?

Well, it's not like the US raped and pillaged any Middle Eastern country. Perhaps you can argue that this occurred on an "economic" level, but that's a stretch.

Much as I dislike Putin, those quotes are on point...the US sure has some fucking nerve telling Russia to negotiate.

What a novel concept!

Heh.

I think Putin's right in this case. What I've gathered from this whole situation is that the organizers of this attack knew all along that it was going to be counter-productive to the Chechens' stated goals. Why? Because their real goal isn't to gain independence at all, but for self-preservation, and to gain more recruits under the promise of being a "martyr", get 70 virgins in heaven, etc. Same with Al Qaeda.

People say this is in retaliation to Western policies. I don't think so. What I think is affected by Western policy is the recruitment of new terrorists, who've had their families killed, lived in poverty, and are desperate, etc. These people are just the pawns for the real leaders, the Osama Bin Laden types. [/ramble]

Did that make any sense? o_O

Putin is spot on in this IMO. If you're going to go the world over and declare a war on terror, that you can't negotiate with 'rapid dogs' and other such foolishness, don't be upset when other people the world over start doing the same thing. Same thing goes with pre-emption. If its cool to invade a country because they MIGHT have been getting something ready for you, don't raise your voice when other countries around the world do the same thing.

If pre-emptive action is good for us, its got to be good for everyone else who feels threatened or has suffered at the hands of radicals. So when Iran says that they are threatened by Israeli aircraft flying in their territory, or pissed off by Israel saying that they will blow up Iranian nuclear facilities (which they've said), you can't take some moral high ground and say 'hey you can't do that'.

An 'pre-emptive' invasion of Iraq validates a lot of very nasty things that we really don't want. How stupid do we have to be to not be writing letters to congress to prevent this policy?

Putin is right. However, apparently there are Chechens that would like to negotiate poltically - not all of them are radical idiots.

And the people who intentionaly murder children aren't "rebels" or "sepratists". They are muderers and terrorists. And idiots too.

I can vouch for the fact that greyhounds simply cannot be negotiated with. I tried; it didn't end well... :(

Well said. Like I said in the other Russia thread, these pro-war people better be ready to take EVERYTHING that comes with it. When the shit hits the fan, your precious internet and gaming systems won't be able to save you. Every right imaginable will be subtley taken away in the name of fighting "Terror".

Why do you think America has become so pro-weed lately? Because it's harmless and "medicinal"? Hell no!! it's because this government wants everyone's defenses lowered as much as possible, so that when these "attacks" come America's way, people will be willing to sacrafice anything, EVERYTHING, for "security".

That's.... a joke, right?

No King, that's.... the... TRUTH, if you're paying attention.
I won't Loki up my reply, because I'm tired, but like what's been said already, preemption for one, will be preemption for all, meaning Americans (and Russians) better be ready to deal with the consequences.

The "truth" is that America has suddenly become pro-weed? And it's a secret effort to make people rally around the flag and the administration's policies?

You're a joke character, right?
