if you follow the names above the playboards, they match up. Judging by the "start" button I would wager this is on demo mode however.

Heh, that'd be crazy to have one cart 8 player support. Too bad about the difficulty in finding 8 friends with DS' to hook up at some point. Bring on Demasked, or something.

I haven't tried any puyos with more than two players. How does it handle 3+, and is it any good? I love two player puyo - prolly my favourite action/puzzle game.

I haven't tried Puyo with more than two players either.

But the PSP has this weird two player mode where you use a single PSP system to play with two players. It's really kind of...interesting.

yeah, its like micro machines on megadrive. I think you could use one pad between two people (or was that SNES - megadrive had the multitap cart?)

Anyway, looks good - if PSP doesn't have single disc multiplayer, then the two-on-one looks like a good compromise. Its the sort of game my friends won't buy.

It's like Cookies and Cream for PS2!! :D

There was a GBA game before that did this..it was either Puyo Pop or Puzzle Fighter.

GBA Puzzle Fighter did it. It sucks.

Does anyone know if Puyo Fever PSP has single UMD download multiplayer? That'd probably help me decide between the two (as we'll probably have 2 each of PSP and DS in the house). My new mantra is no handheld multiplayer games without at least partial single cart/card/UMD multi options. Sorry Driller.

Some of the PSP ads say 8P, while some say 2P. Not sure which is actually correct though.

DS, at least, is definitely 8P.

Eight players? That's bringing back bad (and good, paradoxically) memories of 6 player bust-a-move online... holy shit that was intense.

Lord that game was fun.
When is Puyo hitting the US?

You should get the Windows version of Puyo Fever (if you're running XP, the Japanese interface isn't even an issue). You can play against other people in Random Matches and it seems like fun, especially with the USB controller. Too bad it's random and you play a 6th Kyuu guy one round, and a 4th Dan guy the next. Many of the dans only seem to play Arle too... you get to see some amazing Puyo 2 strategies in play sometimes. But it's still cool to play them online.

I think the Dreamcast one was 4 player and it wasn't too bad... we'll see if my friend Richard buys this and get his input. :) (He'll probably borrow my DS to add it to his guide...)

He owns more versions of Puyo 2 and Puyo Fever than anyone else in the states. When his grandfather was still alive and they used to visit him in Hiroshima, he used to go to the Compile store there and buy a bunch of Carbuncle and other stuff.

Before Compile went *poof!*, they sold all their remaining stuff to... AIKY? something like that... Compile did one new Arcade puzzle game, similar to puzzle fighter IMO (but any piece dropping could be turned into a crash gem), then they went under. Bandai and the company JUST released it for PS2. That was his most recent purchase. Before that it was either the Sega Ages release of Puyo 2 or the PC version of Puyo Fever.

(He also has the Dreamcast and PS2 versions of Puyo Fever and borrowed my cube for the US Gamecube release of Puyo Fever to add data to his FAQ. Found the game for $15 for him (walmart.com), but don't know if he bought it or not.)

Here's all his Puyo guides:

I'd go with the DS version as of what we know now. The 8 player single card mode is a big selling point for me, talk about a blast. Though, I'm sure Sega has something planned for the PSP version to make it a more solid release, but as of now it just comes off as a higher res version of the DS/GBA games.

How's it going Priz? I appreciate your comments in this thread. It's ironic I was just going to ask about the Windows version of Puyo Fever. I have a couple questions if you don't mind....

1)Can I play it on Windows 98SE? If so, are there any challenges/language barriers I should be aware of?

2)You mention the format being a "play a random person" one. Does the game allow you to choose the opponent of your choice? Or does game not give you control of who you play and always forces you to play someone at random? This would seem kinda silly to me.

3)From what you've read/heard/experienced, can you tell me how popular this Windows version of Puyo Fever is? I mean, are there a bunch of people playing online all the time? Or is the online community pretty small?

4)Heard anything about how many in the US bought the game and are playing online?

5)Given you and your friend are into puzzlers, can you give me your opinion on what the chances are of Capcom making an online version of Super Puzzle Fighter either for PC, PS2 or Xbox?

6)Same question above but for Bomberman?

7)In your opinion, what is more fun between Puzzle Figher and Puyo Puyo Fever in a two player vs game?

Thanks in advance :)

I think Micro Machines on the N64 had 8 player through 2 on a controller too.

Not that anyone's talking about that anymore.

The PSP is four players.... but LAME FOUR PLAYERS.

The link can only handled 1 PSP to 1 PSP, so to get four players, you have to have two players on one PSP (ie: one person playing on the dpad, one on the fire buttons with the unit length ways between the two of you)

I believe that the DS is 8 individual units for play, so basically, the DS version is better.

Piposaru also uses this lame-o 1 PSP-to-1 PSP system for four player action. It's somewhat worrying... why can't they just do 4 players over 4 units.

Mingol as well is only 1 vs 1 in true VS mode when you play each other (a la the PS2 version which has 4 player support). Only when you play the tourney style option where you play simultaneously and the scores are logged after each hole do we have more than 2 players.

No link up in Musou either.

Does the PSP version have download multiplayer for 2 machines though?

I'm slowly leaning towards the PSP as my handheld of choice. Puyo's gone down a treat with all my friends I've shown it too. 8-player would be drool-worthy.

I'm glad Sega's stuck with the series despite lukewarm sales. I seem to find when people get their head around the gameplay mechanics-they're hooked.

The PS2 version sold damn good in Japan, something about 170.000 if I'm not wrong. Definately worth continuing the series, if only on it. Other versions bombed hard, though.

Is the PSP one like the console versions, with the 3D effect when you clear things? Or is it strictly 2D like the GBA?

Puyo Puyo Fever's great, but I'm not sure I need a 3rd version of it.

um.... if you want 8 player fun, you need the DS version, NOT the PSP version.

I'm curious if the DS one has those 3d effects.. probably not. Here's hoping for better sound tho. My copy should finally be here tomorrow. YAY!

I wonder what happened to priz?

Yay! Got my copy of Puyo DS today.

The near perfect port for portable play! With full vocal tracks! It doesn't have the 3d chain effects sadly (Basically GBA visuals but upped a bit for character animations). But it's a got a really cute interface going with the 2nd screen and all. Also, to note that the language options are a bit retarded. Usually in the console renditions, you're able to choose what subtitle and language. However, you can only choose the overall :/ But the nice thing is it does include both english and japanese tracks. Also, on first load (dunno if it applies to after you modify it). It'll load up in the language your DS's region was set to. (Well, English/japanese anyway. Didn't check to see what happens if you chose the other languages) Finally, touchscreen is used for menu commands and controlling puyo i you don't wanna use dpad/buttons.

Compile also made Gurulogi Champ for GBA, one of the best puzzle games of all time (and much better than any Puyo game ever was), shortly before going under. I wonder if "AIKY" will ever do anything with the license.

I got my copy of the DS version this morning. Not played it yet but looking forward to some multiplayer action at the next drinkathon with DCharlie and co. The 8 player potential of the DS version gave the PSP version no chance. I now have the GC, GBA and DS versions of this game >_<

bobbyconover - I've been searching high and low for GuruLogiChamp since seeing you praise it, but I can't find it anywhere I've been in Tokyo. Are there any online import/export stores that have it in stock?

Ah yes, I havent tested multilplayer either, but 8 on single cart/seperate DS's beats out sharing a PSP for 2on2 any day.
