Over the weekend there was a Q&A on Twitch with the voice actors for Aerith, Barrett, and Yuffie from Final Fantasy 7 Remake:

I really enjoyed it and just wanted to share it here. I found it really cool how the voice actors are fans of the franchise just like us and they also talk about how they ended up getting the roles. They really study the characters and it's also interesting seeing how similar they are to the characters they play. Plus I thought John Bentley (voice of Barrett) had a lot of really insightful and deep answers for the questions he was asked. I was able to watch it live so they also responded to one of the questions that I asked and you'll hear them mention a request from Celcius. :)

Now I'm even more hyped for the next game!

Briana White is adorable. Loved the videos she made back when the Remake came out, she was quite emotional at the time. Seems like they're all pretty dedicated to do a good job, can't wait for part 2!

I don't understand modern devotion for voice actors.
I think its great that they are able to get exposure for themselves and not just be random names no one knows about. Its good for them, helps keep them and their families fed, and gets them future work.

The English dub was servicable at best.
I agree with that overall, I felt Tifa, Cloud's and Aerith's VO's did a good job overall but you can tell the whole production was hampered by extremely bad Audio direction. Whoever the director on the project was did a bad job getting the best performance out of the talent they had. I'd give it a 7/10 for overall VO quality, where it should have been a 10/10 if they had a great VO director.

I really didn't like the English Tifa voice, I felt it didn't match. Cloud was ok but sounds a bit more emo then his japanese voice. Barret is the best of the English cast imo

I switched to Japanese dub on ps5 playthrough and I find the voices sound much better then the English dub. Other then Barrett.

I also used the Japanese audio. I don't know if the actual voice actors were that much better or not, but I at least tend to notice problems with voice acting much less when it's in JP. It keeps a nice balance where it's more of a reading game like the original, and I don't get too distracted by strange deliveries of lines.

A big part of why modern FF writing is so cringe is that you have realistic(ish) looking characters with dialogue that's written as if it was a cartoon, then dubbed over to English but keeping many of the quirks of anime voice acting.

I blame otakus

Remake was great in Japanese, hope it doesn't change.

To me most JRPG's are ok in Japanese mainly because I can't understand the language. IMO most bad dialogue isn't nearly as bad when you don't hear it spoken out loud.

Like the grunts and sounds, if you aren't familiar with japanese you might just assume it's something they do over there or at least something that's common in their media. But when you hear it in the context of a language that you actually understand it stands out as weird.

The new VAs did grow on me. So much so that I'd like to see them do a re-dub of Advent Children (and of course still offer the original dub track too if it gets a physical release).
