Quentin Tarantino has no intention of recutting his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to appease China's censors.

A source close to the situation tells The Hollywood Reporter that the auteur is taking a take-it-or-leave-it stance in the wake of Chinese regulators pulling the film from the schedule a week before its release in the country on Oct. 25.

The decision to halt the release, as THR reported, may have stemmed from Tarantino's portrayal of the late martial arts hero Bruce Lee, who was of Chinese descent. Sources close to Beijing-based Bona Film Group, which is one of the investors in the film, and China's Film Bureau, say Bruce Lee’s daughter, Shannon Lee, made a direct appeal to China’s National Film Administration, asking that it demand changes to her father's portrayal. Friends and family of the Hollywood action star have criticized Tarantino for his portrayal of Lee, saying it doesn't resemble the real-life man and is instead a caricature.

Basically Bruce Lee's daughter went and cried to the communists in China so they'd force Tarantino to censor the movie, and Tarantino told them to fuck off.

I always find the motte-and-bailey routine hardcore SJWs do hilarious in its dishonesty, re: criticism v censorship (ie just because you have the right to say _____ doesn’t mean you have the right to not be criticized/face consequences).

They and everyone else knows this is where they want to go with their “criticism.” They really don’t think a white artist should be allowed to have a white protagonist defeat a minority antagonist in their fictional work, but they’ll never defend that position.

They’ll only attempt to suppress it by relentlessly attacking the artist and anyone who defends him.

We need more people in Hollywood and in gaming like him.

Everyone is an apologist, whiney, complain about everything, will knee jerk react and wayyyyyy over correct everytime someone isnt happy, only care about stock holders, trying to make a product based on what popular opinion is and thus ruining creativity, etc.

Him however he makes what he wants to make and hopes others enjoys it. He says what he think, makes the movies he wants to make and if someone else doesn't like it then his response is essentially "tough shit" and he will logically and reasonably talk about why he does what he does. Unless you become baiting or just insane at which point he turns you off.

It’s outrageous. Beijing is trying to control the international narrative of all things China. And since they have one of the largest potential audience and client base, some companies and filmmakers are complying.

As for Tarantino? I’m glad he’s not recutting it. Shows integrity. So what if it’s a caricature!!?? That whole film is a caricature of Hollywood culture during the 70s. Deal with it.

People want to Romanticize Bruce Lee, and the Chinese are rebranding him as a cultural icon. But in the interviews we and QT have all seen of Lee, he’s a bit of an arrogant jerk. And he constantly thumbed his nose at traditional Chinese MA.

He had no issues re-editing Django back in 2013 for the chinese market.

The movie was rereleased a month later with major changes: Django and his wife are not seen naked while they undergo torture; a flashback of a slave mauled by dogs is not present; and the shootout at the end of the movie is heavily altered.
