I've been wanting to play this game for a while now, but I haven't played through RE2 (I'm halfway through) and I haven't touched RE3. Is the story in RE:CVX reliant upon knowledge of the events in RE2 and RE3?

Yes there are multiple puzzle in the game that require intimate knowledge of the events in RE2 and 3. Inparticular you need to know Leon's Pant size, Jill's bra size and the combination to the locker in the police station but if you search Gamefaqs you should be able to get this info. Hope this helps.
