Do I need to have the actual dock to use this thing, or can I just plug it straight into my ipod and then into my usb 2.0 pc?

You can plug it into your iPod straight-up. The dock connector on the dock, and the one on the actual iPod are one and the same.

will this one and ones they sell at best buy work on a 3g ipod... how do I know?
