The Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam controversy just made me think about it.

If one converts to Islam, how is the new name you get given/chosen? Hidden meaning? Something related to the newly converted? Phonetics (looks similar to your former Non-Muslim name)? Something else?

I didn't know you had to change your name, but then again I never really practiced Islam. My dad was a born a muslim and didn't practice at all. Then my mom was born a Christian but converted to Islam after they divorced, weird world. But her name stayed the same.

It's up to the person. Many names in the west are Christian names, like Matt, Luke, etc etc. When people convert it's like they're given a new life, reborn if you will ;) and thus sometimes choose a name that reflects their new way of living: a muslim name. It's absolutely entirely up to the person. Look up Jeffrey Lang for instance :)

Im a muslim. So let me answer. Ill just say tho, theres two major sects in Islam and within each sect theres a lot of differnt school of thought. So I dont speak for all Muslims, but Ill just go off the basis of the Quran.

Name has absolutly nothing to do with religion. Not imo anyways and nowhere in the Quran does it ask converts to change their names. A person might change his/her name out of will, but theres no requirement. To put it simply, there is no such thing as a muslim name.
