How is he Jewish if he doesn't practice the faith?

What does it matter if one of his anccestors is/was Jewish? Why would Jewish law be applicable to a person who doesn't practice the faith?

Are we supposed to be bound by who/what our ancestors are/were?

well the nazis considered you jewish if any of your ancestors were jewish, if he follwed thier ideals, then he should consider himself jewish (though I dont know that he does), if nothing else im sure it made him realize that your ancestory does not shape who you are

It is weird how that works. Like it's a race and religion. Isla Fisher converted to the faith to marry Sasha Baren Cohen (lucky guy). Would you call her a "Jew"?

Seems to be the race is what identifies people as a "Jew", even if they do not practice the Jewish faith.

There are two conditions for someone to belong to a community : he needs to want to be part of it, and the community has to accept him. The rule of "if your mother is Jewish, then you are too" only means that the Jewish community will accept you as one of them. But if you don't want to be one, then you're not really one.
Like being born in a given country can grant you citizenship of that country, but you're free to decline it.
