Radio Host Calls Rice 'Aunt Jemima'
Fri Nov 19,12:33 AM ET
By JAMES A. CARLSON, Associated Press Writer

MILWAUKEE - A radio talk show host drew criticism Thursday after calling Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) an "Aunt Jemima" and saying she isn't competent to be secretary of state.

John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM in Madison, said in a phone interview Thursday that he used the term on Wednesday's show to describe Rice and other blacks as having only a subservient role in the Bush administration.

Rice has served as President Bush (news - web sites)'s national security adviser and was named this week to replace the departing Colin Powell (news - web sites) as secretary of state.

Sylvester, who is white, also referred to Powell as an "Uncle Tom" — a contemptuous term for a black whose behavior toward whites is regarded as fawning or servile.

He said Thursday night that he was referring to remarks by singer and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte that the price of admittance for blacks to the Bush White House was subservience.

As for Rice, "they're using her for an illusion of inclusion," he said, adding that he feels her history as national security adviser showed a lack of competence.

Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz called the remarks "racially insensitive," while Sen. Russ Feingold (news, bio, voting record), D-Wis., said in a statement he joined "all Wisconsinites in rejecting" the statements.

Linda Hoskins of the NAACP's Madison branch said she could not comment on Sylvester's remarks until she had heard them in their entirety.

The station's corporate office received about 100 calls about his comments, Sylvester said.

He added that he has a long history of commitment to civil rights and has supported Madison's black community.

He said he was planning a giveaway on Friday's show of Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup. "I will apologize to Aunt Jemima," he said.

The incident came after a radio host in Milwaukee had his talk show taken off the air all of last week after he used word "wetback" to refer to undocumented Mexican immigrants, sparking protests from Hispanics.

I'd be upset if this was someone I gave a shit about.... her ass-kissing Bush ways have removed her from "black" status though. ;)

Could've been worse and got called Mrs. Butterworth - I know she came alive and talked to Tootie but was she even black?

Colin Powell is more Uncle Remus than Uncle Tom.

If this is the guy from Sly in the Morning here in Madison then he doesn't deserve the attention. Pretend the comments and his own existence never happened.

This guy is a moron. Rice is a very well educated and from what I understand outspoken person who has been invaluable as national security advisor. I don't like what the administration wants to do, but she is far from an Aunt Jemima.

So Aunt Jemima was only created to get Black support of whatever company owns the name? If he didnt use the term 'Aunt Jemima' would people be as upset?

Condoleezza Rice is pretty much irrelevant in the black community. First off she supports Bush. Secondly she is completely out of touch with the average black person. She probably secretly wishes she was white. I hate it when one of our people meets success and then pretends like they're not one of us anymore. Why can't we have more Bill Cosbys to give us a wake up call? I'm sure she doesn't give a fuck about the state of the black community.

How the vast majority of us think of her can be summed up in that one "racial draft" skit off the Chappelle show.

"The blacks say you can have Colin Powell as long as you take Condoleeza Rice too." :lol

She is black, there's no disputing that. It's just that she's out of touch with the black community. Not that it matters to me though.

There have been 3 outspoken black males and 2 females who talked about how and why they were republicans just in my college classes last semester. They were not the majority of black people in these classes but they were the most outspoken. They seemed to participate and had the most intellegent things to say compared to any of the other non-white students. There also several very successful black republicans who are outspoken in our community. I am not a democrat or republican, I am just observing what seems to be a trend where I live.

THey seemed to be against wellfare and affirmative action. They talked about both being a weak band aid to cover the real problem. They didnt want their acheivements to be looked down upon compared to their white or asian classmate becuase they were given a racial advantage. They felt they should succeed on their own to fight racism and felt both programs set black people up for failure and created a poor racial image. They seemed to think the democratic party was only fueling this fire. I am trying to remember what other subjects they spoke out about but these were their hottest topics in class.

who decides who gets to actually be black? Is there like some Almighty Black Wizard who sits on some throne and grants you your blackness?

Last time I checked I thought a majority of people on welfare were non-black... how did these intelligent black folk miss that? I need to read up on this again... maybe I'm wrong... which would mean I'm not intelligent... which would mean I did pick the right political party....

EDIT: I just checked some figures from a bit back seems that a majority of the welfare receipients are black just SLIGHTLY(like 1%) ahead of whites... I need to see if those figures still hold true.

It's pretty hard for a group of people to rise up when even with the "advantages" they recieve they are still starting 5 steps behind everyone else.

The fact that there are more whites on welfare than minorities has nothing to do with population number differences... nothing at all.

It does when certain black folk get on a podium and claim to be against welfare, and the welfare reforms currently in place. I'm all for welfare reform, but I'm not for people continuing to put forth the murky picture that poverty is a black thing. It isn't... poverty knows no color bounds, and the way Gek has portrayed these black folk the seem to be against welfare in it's current state for black folk. I have issues with that, I think alot of the welfare reform changes have been for good. Whenever people talk about welfare certain folk(perhaps not these) talk like people WANT to be on welfare... they don't. Most people WANT to better themselves.. they don't want to be beholden to some check given to them by the gov't so that they can survive.

Yes this is a touchy subject for me. Oftentimes blacks who have become successful will get a high horse attitude.. well I did it without going on welfare... why can't you? It just doesn't work that way... and it's annoying as fuck to me... and Gek's portrayal of these folk so FAR seems to fit that mold.

That's not to say these folk aren't intelligent, simply that IMO they don't see the whole picture. And I'll step back now.

Did the disscussion include any ideas they have towards a solution to these problems?

Some of them said they were poor and came from the 'ghetto' where people were proud of having more babies so they could get a better check from the govt. They went on about how most black kids their age would make fun of them for succeeding in school and they were told 'books are for white people'. I was really surprised when other black students agreed they had similar experiences.

They were all for more welfare reform and they wanted to totaly do away with affirmative action. They wanted more skill training programs and better elementarty-high schools. They thought teachers should be paid more.....

Oh I've had some of those experiences as well I speak like a white guy, etc... the whole crab bucket syndrome does exist. But not everyone of any color for that matter is like that, nor are the majority.

"Books are for white people"? Wow, I've never heard that one before. Seriously, people who think to that extreme are in the minority.

Ironically, those are areas that their republican president is doing very little to improve on...interesting.

Saying that you want to get rid of such programs in order to look good to whites and asians only makes them look more like sellouts. I'd agree that AA doesn't eliminate racism (in fact, it's become the latest word that white failures use to scapegoat black people). However, considering that studies into hiring, loans, law enforcement, and medicine *all* show that black people are discriminated against without it, I see no reason to get rid of it unless someone can come up with a better solution. Worrying about how AA gives us a "poor image" misses the point - we've *always* had a poor image.

As for why black republicans are seen as sellouts...well, considering the republican party's words and actions over the past few decades, I don't know why they would be surprised.

They felt otherwise.

Really? Then I guess they're not as intelligent as they like to think they are. Seriously, Bush is a war president. What evidence is there that Bush is committed to successfully improving those issues? I would like to know what the kids and teachers who are suffering in these schools think about his effort.

They were concerned that employers, or whomever, would not look at the black students success as high as they would the success of people of races that did not recieve a racial advantage. One of them was on the track team and joked about it being like needing to give all white kids a 50 foot head start.

As far as what republicans are doing for the black community they were able to argue the democrat programs were making things worse while the republican sponsored programs were much more successful....localy. No one was able to argue against them.

(As for what the Bush administration is doing about these issues, I am not going to pretend to know.....I am just relaying what I heard from my classmates.)

Aren't there about 7-8 times more white people in the US than black people? The fact that the percentage of black people on welfare is anywhere close to the percentage of white people, let alone there being more blacks than whites, is amazing. Maybe that's why some people see welfare as a black issue, because the percentages are so out of whack compared to the general population. They may be right or wrong, but I can easily see how the numbers could lead them to such a conclusion. To say that it is exclusively a black issue, would naturally be wrong.

Oh I see, so you're saying that Black people can't be successful without being a "white apologist"? Do you really think Rice would have kept her job--and gotten a promotion--if she didn't know her shit? I don't understand why Blacks who succeed (outside of hiphop and sports, the "acceptable" success paths in Black society) are ridiculed as being "not Black" or "white apologists" by the Black community.

Imagine how it would sound if you replaced "black" with white.

For example:

Bill Clinton is pretty much irrelevant in the white community. First off he supports Jessie Jackson. Secondly se is completely out of touch with the average white person. He probably secretly wishes he was black. I hate it when one of our people meets success and then pretends like they're not one of us anymore. Not to single you out or anything, (and I think Bill Clinton is the best American president in the past 50 years), but it sounds pretty bad, doesn't it?
