In what order would you rank these 3 games in terms of overall quality and fun?

-Ikaruga
-Bangai-O
-Radiant Silvergun

1. Ikaruga - great example of simple system but complex, difficult gameplay
2. Radiant Silvergun - best weapon system ever, but too many bosses and not enough 'normal' shooter action.
3. Bangai-O - not focused enough, kind of incoherant (but I guess that was the point). Admittedly, I don't have this one, and only got to try it fairly briefly.

...

Ikaruga - memorization ahoy, but at least it looks and sounds good
Banga-io - yay lets shoot fruit. didn't get very far in this because I couldn't shoot where I needed, when I needed. At least it didn't take itself very seriously.
RS - has possibly the slowest ship in any vertical shooter to date. 30 second stages leading up to 10 minute bossfights and burning thorugh ships while trying to figure out exactly which part of the background causes death is the furthest thing from what I'd consider "fun". The soundtrack isn't all that good either, and I think Sakimoto's great.

1. Bangai-o - I own this game and love it very much. An incoherent plot and frantic gameplay, what else could you want in a shooter?
2. Ikaruga - An exciting, simplistic game with a good deal of replay value.
3. Radiant Silvergun - Never got the chance to play this one.

1 Bangai-O was the one I had the most fun with, although 300 things on screen exploding at the same time kind of made my eyes bleed.
2 Ikaruga.
3 Radiant Silvergun was too complicated to be any fun.

1. Radiant Silvergun -- tied with R-Type Delta as the best shooter of last gen.
2. Gradius V (since you forgot it) -- best shooter of this gen.
3. Bangai-O. Intense, original fun. DC version >>>>>> N64 version.
...
105. Ikaruga. Pretty, short, stupid crap.

I'm not surprised.

1. Either RS or Ikaruga. Pick one.
3. Bangai-O

Drinky - Never picked up the N64 version of Bangai-O but I heard it was a fair bit different from the DC one?

My order:

-Radiant Silvergun: One of the best shooters ever, IMO (although I've seen so much divided opinion on this game). It was worth the $140 I paid for it, at least :P Great music, graphics that still hold up, awesome boss fights (though I agree there are a few too many), cool comboing system, and I actually liked the music. The weapon system totally does it for me, having to use different weapons to get through different areas and aiding your fight agains the bosses is a really nice change of pace from other shooters where you just blow everything away.

-Gradius V: The direct descendent of Life Force, the game that first got me into shooters. Awesome, love the options systems, the graphics are beautiful, music is good, there's a nice 2 player mode. Definitely the best Gradius game ever.

-Ikaruga: A bit too short, and I *STILL* have a bit of trouble with the whole light/dark system, it's kind of hard for me to get used to tuning out the bullets of a single color. Also relies a bit too much on level memorization. I enjoyed it (especially with the Hori pad) though.

-Bangai-O: I can't stand the DC controller, and it won't play on a VGA box. My least favorite part of the game is the Ys syndrome where the enemies ram into you and you don't have any invincibility time between hits, so they keep ramming you and you die in 2 seconds :P I've played some of the later levels almost perfectly up until one point, when an enemy did this. But still, the game has an awesome translation and I like the gameplay style.

:)

I never played Radiant Silvergun, but Bangai-O was way funner than Ikaruga. Makes me wish I still had a Dreamcast.

Quality:

1. Ikaruga
2. Radiant Silvergun
3. Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaiou

Fun:

1. Radiant Silvergun
2. Ikaruga
3. Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaiou

(not that bangaio is bad... better than most Treasure games)

First time I've ever heard this (until now, everything I've seen has unanimously said N64 was better), and am really curious what your rationale is.

I played the DC version, but the N64's controller alone would be a significant improvement (ability to use the D pad and stick at the same time would make a huge difference), plus it's said that they nerfed the compexity behind those massive scatter attack thingies in the DC version.

The N64 was made by nintendo. The DC was not.

There. Rationale get. :lol
