I noticed that Cruise has been acting like a talented version of Will Smith and cranking out one big movie after another, year after year. So from good to bad, I have his movies from 2000-2004 ranked like so:

1. The Last Samurai
2. Minority Report
3. Vanilla Sky
4. Collateral
5. MI:2

Does that sound about right?

Performance wise?

1: Magnolia
2: Eyes Wide Shut
3: Last Samurai
4: Minority Report
5: MI 2 (the only other Cruise movie I've seen the past 5 years)

Enjoyment-wise?
1: Minority Report
2: Magnolia
3: EWS

The rest I didn't really care for.

When paired with a strong director Tom Cruise is a very good actor. When he's with some hack it's like a two hour tribute to him.

Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, Collateral, and Minority Report all had good directors.

Edit : In the hack movies its all Tom Cruise all the time. Look its Tom Cruse running, now its Tom Cruise jumping. You want more Tom Cruise, come and get it! Now a Tom Cruise close up, wait have you seen Tom Cruise with his shirt of yet, well here it comes. Here comes the ending. Lets see Tom Cruise save the day but looking really cool, lots of explosion or other crap, just pile it on with a bunch of patented Tom Cruise reaction shots.

Overall movie quality-wise:

1. Minority Report
2. Collateral (very close 2nd)
3. Vanilla Sky
4. Last Samurai
5. MI:2 (only because I have to add it)

Haven't seen Magnolia and I've only seen about 3/4 of Eyes Wide Shut. I bet these two would knock off 4 and 5 though if I had seen them all the way through.

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
Top Gun is still better than them all.... Last Samurai is pretty f'n close though. ;)

I've only seen three out of the five.

1. Collateral (by a mile)

2. Minority Report (even though this is one of my least favorite Spielberg/Kaminski movies)

3. MI2 (utter crap.)

I dont get it? Is it because they both rap their own theme songs?
I think he's referring to how both have primarily done one big film a year for the past several years.

1. The last Samuri
2. Collateral
3. Vanilla Sky( very close 3rd)
4. Magnolia
5. Minority Report
6. Mission: Impossible 2(I wish there were more movies to put this even lower)

Last Samurai 10/10
Minority Report 9/10
Eyes Wide Shut 8/10
Vanilla Sky 8/10
MI:2 7/10 - though I can watch the action scenes over and over again for some reason.
Magnolia 7/10 - Cruise's bits are the best thing about the movie, the rest is a hard slog.

Magnolia
Collateral
The Last Samurai
Minority Report
MI:2

I refuse to rank the shit that was Vanilla Sky. Also I believe Eye's Wide Shut was within the last 5 years (1999?) but I refuse to rank that also.

Oh ok. I think he also has one of the best track records for picking scripts.

It's really weird how people love or hate Vanilla Sky.

For some reason I can watch the film over and over again. Maybe it's because of Penelope Cruz? Maybe some weird subliminal association I have between the movie and GTAIII? I dunno.

I also bought abrir los ojos (sp?) - It's quite good and a little more disturbing than the remake.

Vanilla Sky
Well, actually I meant to type in Collateral because Collateral was Mann's weakest effort since he returned to directing movie back in 1995 and because Collateral was pretty damned stupid.

I haven't seen any of the other movies that qualify. Some of his favorite movies of mine are older.

Edit: Btw, does anyone else ever get Tom Cruise and Kevin Costner's movie roles mixed up? For some odd reason I seem to. Both of them have been in excellent movies. The Open Range is one of his best movies of all time.

1. The Last Samurai
2. Minority Report
3. MI2

That's all I've seen.

Edit: Wow I just realized I should have quoted Mashing's post.

Tom Cruise is an incredibly hard-working actor, and you can tell he's always motivated with his performances. Minority Report and Collateral are my top choices; Minority Report especially; sure it follows a tried and true plot formula but it has a dark sense of wonder and many memorable scenes typical of Spielberg. One of my favourites of that year.
Vanilla Sky is diverting to watch I suppose; but in the end, its an incoherent vanity project. At times I thought Cameron Crowe was just superimposing whatever was in his record collection. Why the heck was 'Good Vibrations' playing doing during the freakout scene?
I have not seen Magnolia, or The Last Samurai, but MI:2 was rubbish.

Minority Report had a lot of problems with it (hell, all of Cruise's recent movies had problems), but it was sort of creepy, and it was entertaining if you didn't think hard enough.

Vincent was an alright character in Collateral, the rest of the acting and story sucked. It was Training Day, -depth, +trendy music and fashion.

1. Vanilla Sky + The Last Samurai (tie)
2. Collateral
3. Minority Report

Fucking loved all three, especially the first two. I don't know how, but Tom Cruise, while not being all that good an actor, has been tied with some of my favorite movies of the last few years. Or ever, really.

Though a lot of people like to hate on Eyes Wide Shut, I think Stanley Kubrick taught Tom Cruise how to act. All of his performances after that movie have lots of little details in the voice and body language that distinguish them from one another (you can especially see this in Collateral, but also in Magnolia). But pre-Kubrick Tom Cruise just has the same smirk on his face the whole time.

Vanilla Sky and Minority Report were both fucking epic. Eyes Wide Shut was crap, except for seeing women, and mostly seeing Nicole Kidman in the nude (man she has an ass...and her breasts/nipples O_O). The Last Samurai was great, too. Mission Impossible 2 was decent.
