Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble mobile game announced

I have zero issue with games going to phones. Doesn't bother me at all. That is, when it's good and this doesn't look good. Even the music for the trailer doesn't sound right.

This is sacrilegious.

Looks like a reskin of this game. From the same developer. I remember seeing it during a Steam Next event.

This is actually the third game by Oh BiBi (a French development studio) with this Hero Shooter gameplay. They made BEAST (which is already on iOS, coming to PC,) and also have an older game called Frag Pro Shooter, which apparently has racked up 150 million installs (unknown how many actually concurrents, but still, it's out there) across mobile and even Switch 1.

(You can see a lot of Frag and BEAST in the Ratchet Ranger Rumble game, like the big soccer ball weapon has an equivalent in both games, but apparently all 3 products are going to keep going even though they're pretty similar games?)

Why are so many being irrational about this?

It's a mobile spin-off based on Ratchet & Clank. They're finally doing what Nintendo's been doing for almost 10 years: mobile spin-offs to help grow mindshare of IP, without devaluing their console by straight-up porting console games to mobile (and having their 1P studios spend time on said ports).

Well aksualley, Sony has been doing this for over 20 years (this is now the third mobile R&C game by my count, including the prequel to Into the Nexus called Before the Nexus and also way back when a 2D game for Nokia phones called Going Mobile; there was also a canceled fourth game for Java phones called Clone Home which has been unearthed/archived recently.) But yes, your point is taken.

Why a mobile game???!? :messenger_loudly_crying:

I've always wanted a Ratchet and Clank multiplayer game for console :messenger_crying:

They've done that too. R&C Deadlocked was the 4th PS2 game and was an online PVP + Campaign Co-Op game. It didn't do so well, but I thought it was great at the time.

There were also the co-op All 4 One game and the Tower Defense'ish Full Frontal Assault game. Been a lot of Ratchets... and even a few Clanks...

This is my second reply to the same thread, but I just noticed that BEAST is already out on Switch 1, in addition to iOS/Android/Apple Arcade.

Gameplay seems similar to the Ratchet one, but there's some differences (specifically BEAST has a kind of Titanfall system of calling down big ride-on creatures, and Ratchet is using a lot more traversal and iconic weaponry tactics) for what it matters. Same basic game though, as far as I can tell so far, without having played either.

This looks like utter shite. I even like mobile games. I have nothing against playing a game on my phone. But damn this game looks bad.

The top comment on YouTube has it right: This looks like the type of game Ratchet and Clank would make fun of.

Looks fun. This is one of those mobile games I would have really wanted on my Vita back in the day.

You know, I started reading a bunch of negative comments in this thread before watching the video in the OP, and I set my expectations low. I feared this would be some cheesy autorunner or match-3 puzzler with the R&C license pasted on.

Then, I watched the video...and I have to say, I agree with you. It does look like fun.

It's immediately recognizable as a Ratchet & Clank game. Granted, the art style for the characters is a little different than Insomniac's usual designs, but it's not a massive departure. I'm more impressed that the developer actually appears to be putting in a legitimate effort to replicate the game structure of R&C on a mobile phone game. This doesn't look like your typical mobile phone slop or some stupid rip-off of Mario Kart or Smash Bros. with "Sony Too" characters.

Back in the PS2 era, I loved playing online multiplayer sessions of Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal and Ratchet: Deadlocked. I can see this being a spiritual successor to the online modes from those games. I agree that if this was on the Vita several years back, a lot of fans would have been enthusiastic about it.

If you want more Ratchet console games some day, an announcement for use of the brand outside of what you want has a better chance of getting you what you want than another year of no activity.

You're right. I don't really play online multiplayer games much anymore (on any system), but I'll hold out hope that this turns out to be good. This will surely raise exposure of R&C to today's gaming audience. Its success could lead to the development of an actual R&C multiplayer game on Sony consoles.

Why are so many being irrational about this?

I mean, Nintendo's avoided SIE's mistake of porting their own console games to PC, so they've still been better at avoiding that devaluation than SIE IMHO. But that aside, this is a good move for expanding R&C's brand mindshare in the market. It also looks sorta like a GAAS, so that's killing two birds with one stone, without sticking one of SIE's 1P studios on such a thing (so no Bend or Bluepoint situation).

If this were a new IP on Switch 2 I bet a LOT of the same people clowning or hating on this would've been perfectly fine with the game or even hyped for it. The double standards are extremely real.

I agree with this also. I don't know what Insomniac's level of involvement is with this game, but it's likely that at least some key people there have a say in the direction of the game.

Back in the PSP/Vita days, Sony sometimes handed off "spinoff" games to other development studios (usually within the Sony group, or closely associated with Sony). Some people complained about the games being "farmed out", but in many cases, the original studio still had some amount of oversight and creative input. And you know what? Several of those games turned out good, even great. With that in mind, I hope that this new game also turns out to be a high-quality hit.

I love the franchise, its hugely disappointing to see the next game is a mobile game, but I'll give it a go. Why not make it on consoles too? I wish Insomniac would take a break from Marvel, sigh.

It actually looks reasonably good. I think kids will like it.

And even better that Sony is getting multiplayer games out of their system through these mobile games lol.

Something I can hopefully use with my brand new Razor Kishi V3 on my Brand spankin new iPhone 17 Pro Max.
I've been waiting for the PS3 Ratchet and Clank games to come to PC, but looks like that is never going to happen. :(
I'm thinking about taking all my PS3 disks to the local Mom and Pop, Maybe someone can fix my PS3.

edit-It's a multiplayer game. :(
Why don't you just use a PS3 emulator?

PS3 R&C games compatibility is super iffy on RPCS3.
Which typically happened when developers used the hardware to the fullest.

Every game is listed as "ingame". Tools of Destruction is listed as playable, but it crashes during one of the on-rails shooting sequences later into the game.
