Surely I can't be the only one?

When I was younger, around 10, I had a Tamiya Buggy. I loved it, but never really looked into getting anything as I got older. I always wanted a good RC car to mess around with, or maybe a helicopter (was always scared I would smash it though) but for what ever reason never thought of getting myself one. Then there was a short craze where you could get tiny helicopters pretty cheap so I picked one up for a laugh. I then spend a bit of time looking around the net to see what the modern RC cars were like, given my last foray into RC cars was well over a decade ago. Then one day this year decided stuff it, I'm going to go out and get myself a good RC car to play around with as I needed a new hobby after many years locking myself in doors with video games and home theatre.

So a few months ago I went looking for a Nitro RC car. I was actually expecting to pick up something like the Revo 3.3, but after some discussion at the local hobby store, decided I would go with electric, more specifically, Brushless and so, came home with a shiny new Traxxas Emaxx Brushless Edition.

Since then, things have kind of gotten out of hand. First thing I realised....electrics have come a long way. I always thought Nitro was ruling the roast for power, but wow, the first time I whacked 6S worth of lipo's in my BL Emaxx I understood why the guy told me to go to a football pitch and not a small park to try it out. Unfortunately I am also finding out that like any hobby, there's the on going costs, mostly in parts. So what I was going to leave mostly standard is turning into a money pit of upgrades and hours of tinkering.

I've rather quickly become addicted to the damn things too. In the past 3 months;

Traxxas Emaxx Brushless Edition (a few mods I'll post up later)
Traxxas 1/16 Slash VXL (fun, in a stupid way)
Xray T3 2011 Euro Rubber Edition 1/10 Touring Car (rolling chasis atm, electrics coming soon)
Losi SCTE (coming in the next fortnight)

So I went from one to 4 in a few short months and I love every second of it. Plan on racing the Xray in a 17.5 turn class when I get it up and running. The short course truck I want to race also but I am investigating local tracks (of which in my area there is unfortunately very few).

So GAF, are there any other RC nerds out there? Cars, planes, helicopters, boats? Anyone?

*raises hand*

A friend of mine talked me into buying a 1/16 E-Revo and I love it, so much fun! 2S LiPos make this little thing fly, but I haven't taken it out for the past little bit. Once there's a little more snow on the ground, I'll be seeing how my new tires perform, should be great!

Yeh those lil 1/16 E Revo's are the same platform as the 1/16 Slash, the little fella's get up and go on a 2S, so funny to see. The Slash is wickedly unstable though, keeping it straight under full acceleration and at top speed can be a bit tricky :)

I have a Yokomo Drift Car.

I was when I was younger. I haven't driven any in a long time though.

My bro had a Tamiya Striker and a RC10 gold tub.

I have a Losi JRX-Pro, Mini-T, RC10TC3 and RC10GT.

got a bit of the bug last year, but I haven't really used them much these days. I think I enjoy the building rather than the driving, and thats an expensive hobby. Can be several hundred pounds for the nicer scale models.

I'd like to get my son a nice off-road RC car without getting one too 'nice' that he'll just fuck it up and end up being a waste of money.

i dig the vintage'ish tamiya cars.
hunting them down, sourcing parts and restoration is fun, not too big on driving them thou.

currently fixing up a Tamiya Lunch Box

had a subaru impreza wrx fuel powered, it was amazing

first time i learned about rc cars that didnt need batteries = mind blown

I got into RC10 about six years ago. I've got one electric and one nitro. I've also got a boat.

With your electric stuff its use it or lose it. Batteries that sit in your toolbox or closet for three years come out dead and won't keep a charge anymore. That's why I like my nitro. It doesn't care if I neglect it.

I completely understand the money issue though. These little things are addictive and you always want better stuff: tires, shocks, motors, etc.

I've bought all my stuff from TowerHobbies.

Yeh batteries are the expensive part of getting into electric RC and they don't like being left sitting around. I buy from Towerhobbies too for certain things, otherwise I try and support local hobby stores as much as possible too.

While I am here, here's one for you Heli fans out there. This guy is godlike. Seriously, he can move this thing like a dragonfly, it boggles my mind. Wonder how many thousands of dollars worth of equipment he smashed before getting something like this down?

I fly nitro RC planes.

Do it's wheels come off? Everytime I watch videos of these being flown, the wheels seem to come off on landing. I couldn't believe how often it happen. How do you go about learning to fly them without throwing away tonnes of $$$

Got a remote control mini helicopter for Christmas last year. Just remembered I had it and started messing with it again. Love trying to land it in really difficult places.

Bumping this topic

I'm in the market for a RC off roader, I haven't own a RC since I was a kid and have no idea which ones are good at the moment. The Traxxas brands seems pretty cool. Can someone recommend a decent model? My budget is $300.

Oh man, I still remember saving up for months for some Nikko Subaru Impreza street RC car.
It was ridiculously fast and I was the king of the playground for a while. Good times.
