This was the first way I played RE4, and honestly I think the Wiimote controls were my favorite way of playing.

I'm not sure if it is just nostalgia from when I first gave it a go, but I really do think the controls felt amazing at the time.

Anyone else trying playing this on the Wii when it came out? What did you think of the pointing controls?

I'd love to revisit this on the Wii to see how the controls hold up, but I no longer have a Wii

are the Wii controls for this game really good, or am I just wrong with what I remember?

related, if the Wii controls were in fact good, does this transfer over to the Switch version? are the motion controls on the Switch for RE4 good as well?

If you separate the control into 2 categories, motion and IR, the IR controls for aiming were great, the rest were passable.

Kind of the issue with the Wii, the IR and motion controls always get lumped together when for traditional gaming one was better than the other.

I even loved the IR controls for RE5.

It's the best version, still. Great game.

VR could surpass it, but I tend to get a little motion sick at times. I might give it another shot now that I have a large empty basement to walk around 1:1 in. Wii version is great though.

Same. I wish the Switch version would use them, so I didn't have to fire up the PS3 and Move to play it.

I never liked the permanent cursor in place of laser pointer during aiming so I beat it with a GC controller. TMP glitch doesn't work in it either. :( Quest VR version is better in a lot of ways.

It felt like Capcom had figured out a path of evolution for light gun games, showed us this alternate timeline with one game, and then quickly shut the door.

RE stop-and-pop gameplay fit perfectly with this way of control.

Best goddamn version of RE4 to this day outside of HD project mod on PC. Fucking incredible game, and it has all the GameCube effects too. It's a nearly perfect RE4, if only it was a bit higher resolution with some better textures and ran at 60 fps, all of which apply to the HD project mod on PC. You can even use wiimotes on the HD project mod as well.

Yeah they were great, I played RE4 for the first time on the Wii so never had anythig to compare to. I went back and tried playing RE4 on PC later - how did anyone play with the original control scheme, its horrible.

The aiming was cool but I really didn't care for two things.

First was how ugly that aiming cursor was. I get that there may have been gameplay considerations for removing the laser sight, which may look a bit spastic with motion aiming, but surely they could've made something work?

How about having the laser only extend partway out the gun and then still have the player aim using a slightly transparent red dot on screen?

Second was how they used the A button on top of the controller to shoot and not the B button on the rear of the controller, which was naturally positioned where a finger would rest on a trigger. It makes the game feel like you are aggressively using a TV remote instead of firing a gun.

Resident Evil 5 on the Move controller on PS5 had the same problem, and in fact was even more egregious considering the Move controller had a literal gun shaped trigger on the rear.

Absolute morons at Capcom.
It's a shame when someone has a totally reasonable post like this, well worded and thought out, and then you completely discredit it by insulting the devs. I agree with everything you said in the post too, and it's good feedback, but that last sentence automatically means most people will simply discard your statement without a second thought.

It's like a writing a great treatment and then saying something racist in the last sentence, just completely destroys the integrity of an otherwise interesting composition of thoughts.

I will remove it, as it's a fair point, but still.

It was so obvious to me within a few seconds of sitting down with the games that I am to this day completely baffled by their decision making.

How did nobody, on two teams, each made up of several dozen people each, across two separate projects - one of which involved a controller with a button literally shaped like a gun trigger - even have the idea to include this as an option?

Yeah, I share the sentiment there, it's a shame they didn't think of it honestly :/. Hey man, check out the RE4 HD project though, completely customizable so you can give it the controls it always should have had ;)

RE4 HD project is absolutely amazing, I replayed the game with the new textures when the PC mod first came out.

Had no idea it was now on Wii, and it completely slipped my mind you can customize the controls on Dolphin, so will check that out again!

the issue with the Wii Remote is that it's INSANELY unergonomic.
I don't know if you have one handy somewhere, but try holding down A for prolonged periods of time. it's not comfortable.

I guess they neither wanted sprinting nor drawing the knife bound to A either. those were bound to Z and C respectively.
and if you want to use B to shoot, you'd need the button for aiming to be either C or Z, as holding A while mashing B really feels awful.

I guess they could have made it a toggle instead of holding the button down. that would have worked decently enough I think

Seconded. It's like the Wii version but 100x better. And you can do stuff not possible in the originals like holding a gun in one hand and the dagger in the other, CQC style.

They were fantastic. Only second to the Quest version.

100% agree -- best version was Wii (on a quality CRT) until the Quest port released, which took its throne. Amazingly faithful to the original... well, except that Ashley no longer calls me a pervert, that maybe knocks of a point or two.

If you're hungry for RE4 with motion controls, play RE4R on PSVR2. It's head and shoulders above literally everything.
To date it's the best gaming experience of my life, and at this point I'm not sure it will ever be topped.

The base version of RE got them halfway there without knowing it but by the Wii edition we had the perfect fusion of a real RE and arcadey light gun game.

What I really wanted was Wii HD/ Wii 2 with dozens of games like this.

I guess it wasn't perfect and easier but man, this version was fun as fuck. I played through it at least four or five times on the Wii.

I was almost baffled that nobody continued in this Light Gun Shooter: Evolved fashion. I was going LIKE THIS LIKE THIS GUYS
